For the first 2 years of my career (2020-2022) I didn't understand how to use the tools in my camera to expose correctly, and even though everyone said "expose correctly", I didn't know HOW. I knew the screen wasn't trustworthy, and finally figured out how to use the histogram and zebras, and now waveforms and false color on my monitor. If you use zebras, set Z1 to 55 and Z2 to 85 or 90, as the clipping point for Clog3 is around 94 IRE. I always set one of my thumb buttons on my R6 as toggle zebras on and off, so that I can check during a recording.

I usually don’t use luts, as they are usually just crushing the footage so badly and there are always things that just don’t fit my needs 😄 i usually do the color grades myself, but there really are not that many cases in which you would actually need to do huge amounts of grading. Just basic CLOG3 -> rec709 and then color correction for natural colors.

Timo, I understand that each person has their own way of doing things, but personally, I believe that a monitor would be very helpful, maybe not convenient for anyone looking for a running and gunning configuration.ñ but I've learned the hard way not to rely solely on the histogram, so perhaps utilizing other proper video exposure tools like waveforms or false colors would be beneficial. If you happen to use a similar configuration, I would love to hear your opinion on it. Perhaps you could do a pros and cons video about it.

I have an R5 and use the light meter all the time. No issues with it. The histogram disappearing is why I don't use it. In a run and gun situation I can't rely on exposing for one scene only. The best thing I have found to do is expose for the most harsh sunlight area then if you move around your highlights won't clip. Canon clips very easy on highlights opposed to Sony where you can recover it. Canon is better on the shadows then Sony. Just my experience with owning my R5 for over a year and owning a A7SIII for 2 years.

Yeah, light meter ofc is the best option, and ao are false colors, but this is the in camera ”hack”, with no other equipment needed.
I noticed the difference in the highlight recovery between the R7 and FX30 last May as I was editing the footage from Norway for my 1K Polar Plunge video, but I don’t think Canon is that much better than Sony with the shadows, atleast not with the APS-C sensor.
