How to refill a (non-refillable) NovoLog FlexPen with a NovoLog PenFill cartridge

  • Your doctor accidentally prescribed the NovoLog PenFill cartridges instead of a box of pens, and you don't have a PenFill compatible device. All you have is a nearly empty FlexPen!
    First you curse the FDA for making the refillable pens prescription-only.
    Second, you watch this video and breathe a sigh of relief!
    Suppose you already threw out your FlexPen: you can use the OTC Novolin-R FlexPen from Walmart!
    (As a last resort, if you have some syringes around, you can use the cartridge like a vial - just don't inject air first, and draw into the syringe SLOWLY. The plunger will be pulled down by the suction.)

    thank you, you are a lifesaver. one note: when opening the pen, use more wiggling and less force, i managed to break the glass at first. next pen worked flawlessly!

    Thankyou,... thankyou.... thankyou !!! You are a lifesavere. It worked two out of three times. One time, I must have wiggled it the wrong way, or something, the cartridge just wouldn't fit. Well actually, I just couldn't snap back the two parts together. But, heck, this is my third cartridge. I am just alternating two empties, until I run out of cartridges. Awesome!!!
    I have done the syringe thingy too. Works fine. I also had a very very old, like almost 26 yrs old HUMAPEN-HD Luxury Edition in my museum of old cameras and old insulin injection devices. The cartridge fit almost perfectly in it. A bit tight,at the top, but I could take injections. I have all kind of insulin devices in my museum. A needleless injection device (Yep! Just like in Startrek), And a Insulin inhaler just like the inhaler for asthama, only as large as a small water pump (which you use to pump water out the window when your basement gets flooded. LOL) That insulin was in powder form in a foil strip, just like some BG Test strips individually rapped in foil, that you insert in the device and it punctures it and fills the air inside with the power. Then you press the plunger as you breat through the nozel in your mouth. I am just waiting for, some day, candies filled with swallowable insulin, or some oral form of medicine :D

    You can also use penfills from Tresiba in the Novorapid case. I got refills from my doctor but you can’t do it with regular Tresiba pens

    It is very easy to do now, going back to buying the Novarapid Penfill at 1826 as opposed to Novorapid Flex pen @ 3345 per 5

    Does it work for the refill of alternate brands, say Lantus? If the height of refill is not precisely the same?

    Can you refill the insuline itself. I'm cheap and getting put on to the pump, and wantto carry an insuline pen as a backup.

    Is it any cheaper to get the refill cartridges over the flex pens themselves? Or are they the same regardless? Great vid! Thx!

    When you do the wiggle part to releasethe2 parts. Becareful because the glass inside will crack and break.

    A very useful video, but I'd suggest not to remove the label if it fits a since if the vial was accidentally bought broken, all the insulin would leak out from the cracks on the glass wall while administering the insulin.

    Amazing because the catridges are cheaper per 5 than the prefilled Novarapid pens here in Thailand

      I did.

    • @ryanadrianh
      @ryanadrianh Год назад

      @truereal1 technically you “can”. HOWEVER,
      the insulin in the pen vial will be expired, and mix with new, fresh insulin. Even if you aspirate all old insulin, there is still remnants of old insulin which can affect the rest of the new insulin. Don’t even think of washing the inside of the pen vial.
      Second, you might accidentally, without knowing, contaminate the insulin if you accidentally refill more than 3mls and the entire rubber bung dislodge from the pen vial, so not really recommended.

    Not at all easy, too many steps, use of brute force in detataching parts might break them. Not user friendly for the elderly who might live alone .
