I ordered a Plaid and a Long Range model S Jan 28 2021. I got the Plaid early August and the long range end of Oct. This guys positive comments on the Model S LR resonate with my experience. The Plaid is scary above 60 mph but both vehicles will give you tunnel vision during full acceleration. After I scared a dozen people in the Plaid I got my Long range and I can say the plaid is not worth the extra money. I can barely tell them apart. I got grey for both. The long range handles better (feels a little lighter) rides better (19”tires on the long range) and brakes a little better. (same brakes but lighter car) Tesla is laughing all the way to the bank selling the Plaid for 40k more than the long range. I’m laughing too as I was able to sell my Plaid for $24,000 more than I paid and that was after paying 11k in CA sales tax on that car. I love the Model S LR and agree with the reviewer that it’s the better deal. I really feel like I dodged a bullet being able to get my money back and then some on the Plaid. It’s only advantage was pulling like a jet aircraft from 60. You really need some smooth large sections of asphalt to pull it off safely. Yes it was amazing but the long range still wows me every time I accelerate beating even Charger hellcats easily.
@@jamespaul1835 I've driven the plaid and it's insane, I can definetly differentiate the 2 second experience that you get in the plaid to the previous model s performance which was a 2.5ish sec car to a 2.9 second car like a corvette and I don't think that a 2 second 0-60 time feels the same as a 3.2 that you get long range. For a sensible buyer, the long range is obviously the better buy, but I don't think Tesla is ripping you off with a $40,000 upgrade to plaid. There is a logical and valid case to skip over to the plaid and the $40,000 price increase is a steal considering an extra $60,000 to upgrade from a regular 5 series to the more performance oriented M5 comp (M5 isn't available) and an extra $40000 from comp to CS...the same goes for a regular c-class to AMG c class. But there is a valid point that can be made going for the upgrade and that same reason applies to the model s LR and plaid.
@@thedumbconspirator4956 I did 12 runs with a draggy and the fastest I could get with the plaid was 2.37 seconds whereas I was getting 3.11 seconds with the long range. My experience with both cars was that if people were allowed to drive both of them as much as I did many would end up being happy to accept the long range model. I think it’s interesting that after my experience with these two cars Tesla will get you a Plaid as soon as December but if you want the long range it’s going to be the end of next year, my guess is they don’t want people to know how good the long range is but I know.

I got the FSD and 21" tires in the midnight silver, I wanted the white or beige interior, but when you're buying used and saving huge $$$s, you can't have everything. The 2024 new with these options was $81K, but I'm old and cheap.
I bought a 2021 S long range lease return back in August 2024 for 51,000 with cream interior, 19 inch wheels ❤and the additional 1 year warranty that Tesla included after the manufacturer warranty ends. I sold my 2021 Y Performance after 3 years of ownership because I wanted more range 😊and I’m 65 years old and cheap 😂PS : it’s a great car 😊and definitely huge savings.
Good video. One minor correction, though: the first significant Model S refresh (new front fascia, HEPA filtration, headlights, rear diffuser, painted side skirts, etc.) was done in early 2016 (around April, IIRC), not 2017.
Also, the 2017 model year got the 100 kWh battery, giving it a ~330 mile range, not 250. 2017 was the inflection point for many: because of the car and the maturity of the supercharger network. By September, you could drive your Tesla to nearly anyplace in the US you wanted.

Excellent review! I wish I had rented your Model Y a couple months ago just to show my support for you guys but my plans changed! Either way, I really think they solved a lot of the issues I had with my 2017 Model S. I really appreciate the center screen being laid out in a landscape fashion instead of the portrait, as the older model created a right corner my right knee would always hit. The seats being heated and cooled brings a more luxury and premium feel to a car that should feel like that. All in all I might think about trading in the Model Y for the Model S sometime next year!

To answer your question, they went with the motorcycle approach for the buttons. You don’t press the airbag on the handlebars for the horn on a motorcycle, right? You use thumb controls for everything, so they did the same.
I sold some cars and thought I would purchase a Plaid. I have a friend with one and he demonstrated the car to me. The acceration is brutal at the end I really did not feel like I wanted to go this fast - 153 through the quarter mile. I just have no wish to be caught at that speed. Its way to easy to do it. I felt for the price that it just wasn't worth bragging rights. So I spent way less money on a used model s long range plus. The 0-60 is only 1 second longer and the price of my car was only 53k used. You still get tunnel vision if you want just not to 153. Love my S LR. Car is awesome. Great video. Purchased a Y LR for the wife and a month later purchased the S. She is trying to drive it more than me. No surprise!! LOL!!! Who the hell would buy an ICE car these days???
I live in Norway. Never cared for EV’s, until Model 3 sr+ got reduced price early last year, thought this was a good 2nd car for my wife. But man, what a car! Loved it so much, still do! Got myself a Y this year, never going back. Absolute amazing cars. Model S next❤️
yup ever since I got to experience in my cousin model y it was way better than my sister Honda crv both are new same year but i prefer the model y over Honda anytime of the day but I’m gong to work my ass off for the used 2021 model s long range I need that 400 miles because I drive a lot and don’t want to wake up forgot to charge the car.
The regenerative braking in the Model S is phenomenal! We are just used to Teslas being able to stop in roughly the same time and distance that they can start in the case of an emergency. IMO as you make a car accelerate quicker, you should also make it decelerate quicker.
One thing that bugged me when I drove one was that you couldn't use the right scroll-wheel to adjust follow distance on AP for some reason. Any idea if they fixed that?
Excellent, thorough, helpful review. I have a 2015 which I *love.* The new 2022 S has incredible advancements which I very much desire (especially charging speed) but the yoke and haptic controls are a total deal-breaker. That stupid shit ruined what could have been the *perfect* car.
Worth noting also that the rear trunk space has been reduced in the refresh: used to get two bikes in there, now one bike is tight. I think the issue is that the trunk floor is much higher up than it used to be (also means the subcompartment below the floor is now deeper, but that’s not as useful)
Looks nice , still too much money for me. Probably around 130k in Australian dollars 😯 Hopefully they end up doing some great suggestions from this video
@@KLWTTS do u have any info on who I cld speak 2 get my order reinstated. They just cancelled me. I'm thinking cause they dont want to honor the 79k for the model s
I still feel like the led reflector headlights are about crap. My 3 has matrix headlights and they are amazing. It took tesla way too long to upgrade the headlights on the S only the later 2022s have the new headlights and tail lights.
Is Tesla leaving the door open for other brands of electric luxury cars to take over this segment, especially once sharing Superchargers is rolled out everywhere?
I think it’s possible to make a car that is more “luxurious” than the Model S, but once Tesla revisits the UI behind the 17” touchscreen, it’s the most complete vehicle package on the market. Between the supercharging network, the app, the HVAC, and all the other creature comforts, it’s just an overall exceptionally easy to enjoy vehicle.
@@KLWTTS Thank you so much for reminding of the things that set Tesla apart. If someone only cares about luxurious leather interiors made from the most pampered cows and dashboards made from old growth forests, those things are possible and they have a market. Unfortunately there are people that will kill a rhino 🦏 for it’s horn or kill a shark 🦈 to have some shark fin soup. Tesla keeps everything animal free and sustainable.
@@KLWTTS and as tesla always does, I'm sure as production ramps and competition comes they will be lowering the price back down. I recall a tesla conference call where they claimed that new Model S cost to manufacture would actually be lower when scale than the old S. The old S went as low as 69420 lol. I wouldn't be suprised if in 2 years we see a 75k long range S.
You might be right about the order of the menus themselves for Pre-refresh S to refresh S but many of the controls screens are convoluted and I think they could streamline the order of the controls much like Model 3 and Model Y. *Full controls tab lists below* IMO they should: 1: Rethink the layout of the “Controls” menu 2. Relocate Odometer data. 3. Merge “Pedals and Steering” with “Suspension” 4. Have “Autopilot” next to “Navigation” 5. Remove “Charging” and make it an ever present icon bringing up a separate menu like in Model 3/Y Menus For reference: Model 3/Y: Quick Controls, Lights, Locks, Display, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and now Upgrades New S/X: Controls, Pedals and Steering, Suspension, Charging, Autopilot, Locks, Lights, Display, Trips, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and Upgrades
I order tesla Model S long range early enough to get the 79k price, suppose to come in January. Don't like the Yoke but the rest of the car looks great. What should I do. Buy Model 3 Long Range Or accept delivery of the Model S Long range?
We're still talking 670hp in the long range... Think of any daily driver ICE powered saloon with that amount of power and you'd be mind blown. BMW M5 Comp, AMG e63S, Audi RS6, that sort of thing. So 670hp is more than plenty.
@@alexnutcasio936 TRUTH. I just think the extra range, and paying nearly $40,000 less is better. You can just buy an LR and invest the rest. Or buy another car 😂

I don't get the obsession with brakes from some youtube MS owners. As a second gen owner, I barely even have to ever use them beyond stopping from 5 mph because that's around the speed regen quits.
I am actually considering Model S LR with the 19' tires. I want a quiet, comfortable ride than the holy f'ing shit 0-60 which you will get with the LR anyway. I get it all the time with my 2021 MY and its fast enough let alone the Model S LR. Thing is I want to actually test drive one before pulling the trigger. That's going to be difficult. Sucks!
This is a great car and having driven one l can say that it's an amazing vehicle.. However, At 4:13 you can see that the door moulding at the base of the window is higher than the matching moulding for the rear door panel. This fit plague is still unfortunately a Tesla drawback. With so much brainpower, this is a shame.
And it would be nice to maybe have someone with a background with cars to review cars and not tech journalists who really have zero clue about the technical aspects of a car..!
Exactly, although supposedly they all have the model 3 c.f. wrapped motors now. Imagine the cost savings for tesla. It would use those motors in every single product. From the base rwd 3 up to the plaid and even the semi uses 4 model 3 motors. 🤔
The Model 3 is still the best car Tesla makes. This car is just not what I was expecting from Tesla. Seems like all the upgrades that were supposed to be in this car, Lucid implemented them in the Air. This car was a strike back at the Taycan, and fell short in so many other areas.
One can choose what one values. Lucid looks good so far, but we need to see real life reviews first. They have a chance to survive, but will be a tough few years.
Surprising preference there, we think the Model Y trumps the Model 3 in almost every way except in appearance and on Track. The New Model S provides the most comfort and best appearance of any Tesla though IMO
I have always hated EV's for their soullessness but lately I have actually gotten quite interested in them. Still would never own one the extreme proprietaryness of them is way too much
All that power on the Plaid but nothing to correlate for the speed in terms of suspension, dampening, control, etc. - is downright scary. Musk needs to get it together. The Model S LR is definitely a better 'balance' between the two.

Not a track! Just some roads in Marin, just north of San Francisco
Does the rear monitor/screen be used with wireless headphones? I don’t want to compete with music/video in the rear of the car while driving. Thanks.
Unfortunately no, not yet but it should!
How's the HVAC in the winter for anyone who has this model? Cooled seats work well or average?
At 2:00 why are we watching the back of your head brah? 🤔
Thoughts on the 21” vs 19” in terms of ride quality?
I got the plaid and yes the LR is the way to go price wise for what you get. I just had to tho....
If you can afford Plaid, it’s AWESOME
I live in Norway. Never cared for EV’s, until Model 3 sr+ got reduced price early last year, thought this was a good 2nd car for my wife. But man, what a car! Loved it so much, still do! Got myself a Y this year, never going back. Absolute amazing cars. Model S next❤️
yup ever since I got to experience in my cousin model y it was way better than my sister Honda crv both are new same year but i prefer the model y over Honda anytime of the day but I’m gong to work my ass off for the used 2021 model s long range I need that 400 miles because I drive a lot and don’t want to wake up forgot to charge the car.
a review should be more than i can read on a website
Oh!
I’m not sure I’m with you on the breaks. Do you need bigger breaks with regen?
The regenerative braking in the Model S is phenomenal! We are just used to Teslas being able to stop in roughly the same time and distance that they can start in the case of an emergency. IMO as you make a car accelerate quicker, you should also make it decelerate quicker.
Really good review
One thing that bugged me when I drove one was that you couldn't use the right scroll-wheel to adjust follow distance on AP for some reason. Any idea if they fixed that?
They need to address this. It makes almost no sense removing that from the scroll wheels
I would love one, but the wait time is absolutely ridiculous. I'll keep my Y until I can go to a dealer test drive.
Is the suspension different from the Plaid?
Excellent, thorough, helpful review. I have a 2015 which I *love.* The new 2022 S has incredible advancements which I very much desire (especially charging speed) but the yoke and haptic controls are a total deal-breaker. That stupid shit ruined what could have been the *perfect* car.
It's so close to being the best for everyone, we understand why this might be a dealbreaker for some.
are they ever going to put interior ambient lighting in these cars? That would be a game changer for me
What are the tire sizes on your 19 inch wheels?
A squared 255/45-19 on the 19” and staggered 265/35-21 & 295/30-21 on the 21”
Great Vid

@@KLWTTS been subbed for awhile!
Awesome Ryan
İmpressive!!! Can we update(Uncorked) this long range like a before brand 2017 and 2018, 100D ? İf possible 0-60 mph can be faster and more range
I like large frunks and I cannot lie… so for that reason, I will pick up the 2012 Signature Model S 🤨
Worth noting also that the rear trunk space has been reduced in the refresh: used to get two bikes in there, now one bike is tight. I think the issue is that the trunk floor is much higher up than it used to be (also means the subcompartment below the floor is now deeper, but that’s not as useful)
“Your average driving is just small turns on the highway” says the American, oblivious to the rest of the world’s roads
Looks nice , still too much money for me. Probably around 130k in Australian dollars 😯 Hopefully they end up doing some great suggestions from this video
Thank you
@@KLWTTS do u have any info on who I cld speak 2 get my order reinstated. They just cancelled me. I'm thinking cause they dont want to honor the 79k for the model s
Nice vid. How are the headlights? Any improvement there?
You know what, we missed that detail, I am not sure exactly how it compares.
No range test or anything??
While not a perfect compare, our Cannonball record was effectively our range test
@@KLWTTS I guessssssssss. I'll check that video out tomorrow.
@@larryspiller15 check out the full story on @vinwiki
Gorgeous car, gorgeous design.
Yes.
Better UI? Better ecosystem? Better Engineering? Better batteries? Profitable? Scalable? Good luck with that!!!
What about the brakes?
They need to be bigger
Make the yoke optional and I would consider it, otherwise it’s the MB EQS or the Lucid for me.
the main menu layout is the exact same as prior menus -- what you talkin bout
You might be right about the order of the menus themselves for Pre-refresh S to refresh S but many of the controls screens are convoluted and I think they could streamline the order of the controls much like Model 3 and Model Y. *Full controls tab lists below*
IMO they should:
1: Rethink the layout of the “Controls” menu
2. Relocate Odometer data.
3. Merge “Pedals and Steering” with “Suspension”
4. Have “Autopilot” next to “Navigation”
5. Remove “Charging” and make it an ever present icon bringing up a separate menu like in Model 3/Y
Menus For reference:
Model 3/Y: Quick Controls, Lights, Locks, Display, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and now Upgrades
New S/X: Controls, Pedals and Steering,
Suspension, Charging, Autopilot, Locks, Lights, Display, Trips, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and Upgrades
I order tesla Model S long range early enough to get the 79k price, suppose to come in January. Don't like the Yoke but the rest of the car looks great. What should I do. Buy Model 3 Long Range Or accept delivery of the Model S Long range?
Accept delivery of Model S duhhhh, so many more features, much more comfortable and a more practical hatchback design
buy the model 3 and sell me the model S lol

Thank you!
Onewheel rocks bro!
They are my primary way of getting around the city!
@@KLWTTS Can you charge them from the Tesla? I ride mine almost daily.
We're still talking 670hp in the long range... Think of any daily driver ICE powered saloon with that amount of power and you'd be mind blown. BMW M5 Comp, AMG e63S, Audi RS6, that sort of thing. So 670hp is more than plenty.
Turning now much better with track mode .
I'd say that the LR is arguable better than Plaid.
So says the guy who doesn’t own one.
@@alexnutcasio936 TRUTH.
I just think the extra range, and paying nearly $40,000 less is better. You can just buy an LR and invest the rest. Or buy another car 😂
I’d have to agree with you. The same car with slightly more range and similarly quick acceleration for a $40,000 savings seems like a steal to me!
Best thing about LR is having everyone asking “oh is that the Plaid?!” and you answer “no, but…”
@@JoshWest247
The other day some youngsters ask me, "Is that the Plaid or the Regular one?"
I paused for a second and replied, IT'S THE LongRange.
I was thinking to myself Aint that bout a bitch..."Regular one"....lol
Front isn't wider, it is just redesigned a little bit on the bottom. People not in the know won't be able to see it.
It is wider though, in 2020 it was reported to be 77" wide and now its 78″
Model S is the best!
We’re taking delivery of one soon!
HAHA full review, ive been watching hours of Björn Nyland lately 😂😂
If anyone has an early order of this and don’t want it, I would love to take it over and pay extra on top!
Smart move! 🧠
@@KLWTTS thank you
90k isn't a poor man's car... LOL
The yoke is a complete deal breaker. And the horizontal screen has ruined the sleek lines of the interior.
I don't get the obsession with brakes from some youtube MS owners. As a second gen owner, I barely even have to ever use them beyond stopping from 5 mph because that's around the speed regen quits.
I just wanted to mention Tesla is soon gonna come out with an upgraded carbon ceramic brake kit for the model s but it will cost you $20,000!
Yes but they are claiming somehow it'll only be fitted on the Plaid...
The Yoke Sttering wheel should be be an option...
Bad Move Tesla...
Elon Trust me fix dat shi quick!
these ones??
Update: tesla now offers a $20,000 Carbon Ceramic kit for plaid 🤯
No love for the Poor Man’s Plaid 🥲
@@KLWTTS very curious if they will work with long range plus with upgraded arachnid rims from plaid???
@@chezikmusic The website currently implies that they won’t
@@KLWTTS yup :(
👏👏👏👏👏
And it would be nice to maybe have someone with a background with cars to review cars and not tech journalists who really have zero clue about the technical aspects of a car..!
I wouldn’t call a $90k car a poor man’s car ;)
Fortunately, The one we reserved early was grandfathered in at $80,000 ;)
As long as the poor man can afford to pay $100+K for this car....
If only the delivery time was not 8 months.
So true!
7000miles in 42hours?
7000 miles in 5 days
The plad that has 3 motors that car does not have 3 motors it's got 2
Exactly, although supposedly they all have the model 3 c.f. wrapped motors now. Imagine the cost savings for tesla.
It would use those motors in every single product. From the base rwd 3 up to the plaid and even the semi uses 4 model 3 motors. 🤔
No some got 2 motors
80,000 KEEP IT.
We have one on order at this lower price... Financially it would be silly not to buy
We can’t wait to conduct a full review of the Air. @Lucid knows how to reach us
Surprising preference there, we think the Model Y trumps the Model 3 in almost every way except in appearance and on Track. The New Model S provides the most comfort and best appearance of any Tesla though IMO
@@KLWTTS Lucid out three weeks and not a single independent review? Anyone find that odd given MT named it Car of Year.
Lucid is your grandpa's car. Gives the vibes of a Lincoln town car or a Cadillac
why is the screen keep showing 69?
I have always hated EV's for their soullessness but lately I have actually gotten quite interested in them. Still would never own one the extreme proprietaryness of them is way too much
Your music is very loud and distorted.
It's basically a Model S Plaid without the power and speed
60-0 braking in 98 feet suggests the brakes are quite adequate.
Its not bad but in our opinion, it could/should be better
All that power on the Plaid but nothing to correlate for the speed in terms of suspension, dampening, control, etc. - is downright scary.
Musk needs to get it together.
The Model S LR is definitely a better 'balance' between the two.
