I went to many Oakland games in the 80's and he was the greatest, most impactful player I ever saw play the game. You win a game by scoring more runs than your opponent. The stolen bases put him in position to score runs and he scored over a hundred runs 12 times including the 3 seasons I saw him play in Oakland. But the intangible often overlooked is the effect he had on opposing pitchers any time he was on base which as much as 46% of the time. Time after time I saw pitchers implode after he ended up on first. The high lights don't show how many times pitchers threw back on him and that was insane, often 3 or 4 times in a row (I saw over 10 throwbacks a couple of times, what the fans booing like mad, followed by a steal) This would kill their concentration on the hitter and the batters behind rickey would feast. Several times I saw what I can to call the "walking triple". A pitcher would merely walk Rickey and then find him on 3rd base 2 pitches later. He struck fear in pitchers just as much as any power hitter you ever saw because they knew if he got on base he was going to embarrass them. He regularly hit over a hundred singles and walked over a hundred times and stole over a hundred bases which led to over 100 runs scored. So he's on the first 200 times and steals a base about half the time. He's on first around 200 times and scores half the time. In 82 he was on first 235 times (singles plus walks) and scores 119 runs. (forget about the SB's, runs win games) partially because pitchers blow up when he's on. I saw that over and over and over again. It's a shame he went to the Yankees right before Canseco and Big Mac showed up..
When I was a kid, he was my favorite player. He played the game with so much joy. I grew up a Cubs fan but when the A’s or Yankees (when Rickey was on those teams) came to play the White Sox we would go to Comiskey to see Rickey play. What an amazing player he was. Truly an all time great.

Rickey over one four year span before he even turned 25 had three seaons with 100 walks and 100 steals. No other player in the modern era has a single season with those numbers
Ricky simply *is* a run. His very existence is a run.
If I were drafting an All-Time team, Rickey would be my #1 draft pick. He waged Jihad on the basepaths.
All-Time #1 in Steals, Runs, & Lead-off HR, #2 in Walks. 3,000+ hits, a .401 OPS, and a 111+ WAR.
The best #1 ever. It's not even close.
Prime Rickey was jacked 💪🏾💪🏾
This video is 20 or so minutes so clearly it’s not enough 🤙🏻
Ricky was the GOAT Even Above Willie Mays. He changed EVERYTHING. Look at the Canseco/McGwire A's. Sure , Ricky had an MVP season, but he did it everywhere he went. I never bought and idolized jersey as a kid except for one: 24 on the A's. Lime Mizuno gloves. And then he did it or TWENTY MORE YEARS. Ima a GIants fan i want a Ricky jersey. He was the king. Way more than Lebron. Sheeeyiiit.
Love that he takes the base in the middle of the game...as if it's going anywhere :)
Rickey does what Rickey wants. Nobody else gets to touch Rickeys base, Rickeys base is going home with him. Rickey steals the same base twice if Rickey wants.
No one hated standing on first more than Rickey
Rickey’s trophy room prolly full of bases lol.
