I always thought perfect was better than good and something you should strive for. And in some specific contexts, it is! But in general, it's a horrible piece of advice, and sadly, it's something I believed, from when I could even start to believe anything. I'm not saying you should disenchant children about the world, but the other extreme is also terrible. (prove me wrong btw, I feel like I'm missing out on an important piece of info)
EDIT: I also wanted to point out that I currently have points in school that are sometimes nearing perfection. (I didn't want to brag, I'm sorry) That makes the perfectionist mindset even harder to get out of my head.

Wow. This video came at a blessing of a time. I’m beginning to restart my RUclips channel around the subject of personal finance for the sub niche of filmmakers.
I’ve listed 15 of so ideas. Written 6ish scripts. And I’ve recorded and edited 2 videos.
There’s so much I’m not happy with. I’m not happy with my “set” I fear the quality of my content may not be helpful enough, and get this.. Even my appearance. Not that I’m at all out of shape or something, but still looking at myself on camera even a little older than I used to be, it shakes me up.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  4 года назад +10

I'm glad this was helpful! I think the main thing to keep in mind is that we all feel it.
My "1% upgrade" for this video was learning how to create a true "cinematic" A-roll shot (in the vein of Crimson Engine and Armando Ferriera), and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out - except a friend pointed out that I framed myself so that my eyes are in the middle of the shot, which is a bit awkward-looking. So I was kicking myself for that. And, of course, I wish I could have shot more b-roll and made it even more cinematic - but, alas, the deadline is there for a reason. Learning how to do the a-roll setup took the better part of two days - now we have tape on the floor for everything and can set it up in 5 minutes. I can fix the framing in the next vid.
The other thing is that you're always your own harshest critic. Most people will just appreciate your content, and they'll appreciate it as it improves over time - but very few are going to complain about it in the beginning :)

The old ceramics class experiment covers a lot of this ground too. 1/2 the class was told their grade is determined by how many pots they made, and the others were judged by quality. Funny enough the group that made the most also turned up as having the higher quality too. These were students though, so naturally focused on improving and learning; the mindset should never be taken for granted.

My dad tought me something related because I struggled with perfectionism in uni. When working on projects (in business and in general), never focus on the 100%. It will lead to low efficiency because the last 3% that will be used only for improving and perfectioning an already good enough project. So to be efficient, 97% done is the goal.

It changed the way I approach any work I do now. What I love about this idea (and this great video!) is that it gets rid of the burdensome idea that in order for a piece of work to be great, it has to start off great and the process of creation has to be some glamorous thing. Creating is hard, and consistently creating is even harder. But this video is a reminder that it's the commitment to being consistent that creates greatness. Thanks!

Hello, your videos have really helped me.
TBH you've perfectly explained why I write and write, but rarely finish and publish papers. I'm worrying about content, phrasing, structure, etc, all at the same time. I try to lower my standards, but even then I'm just going in circles trying to get all of these aspects to at least a mediocre level. Picking ONE aspect to work on at a time is a brilliant solution. It's a more tangible and specific approach than "don't be a perfectionist in general".
Although this is a bit more for companies, I was also recently introduced to the idea of "iterations" or versions of a product, resulting from a work "sprint". I really liked that as it means you're free to produce a shoddy "Version 1", but still get closure and accomplishment from that.
Seems basic, but I don't think these concepts come naturally to me. I'm very good at consistent input (starting and continuing), but not good at producing actual output. The trouble is most productivity advice only focuses on the former, and gets really vague ("embrace imperfection") concerning the latter. I was wondering if you could recommend any books or resources on actually producing stuff, like the above concepts. I'd be very grateful! :)

I think for some people the things we are looking to improve upon only occur once we are obstructed. It's good to be proactive but that can set up alot of expectation. A difficulty in teaching is knowing what needs or is best to be taught and to meet the most likely position of growth for a student. A student has trouble adapting to information that is not always best absorbed in the order it is presented. Luckily, where you have control and you might force yourself into a frustrating corner, as important as practice and growth in corners you can still work on is finding the solution to a problem you're looking to solve, being able to communicate and solve these issues is as important as growing where we can by that 1%. To me, communication is the biggest challenge in just about everything.

A famous example of a creator who excelled at consistency was Vincent Van Gogh. Before starting painting he had multiple other jobs, where he learned the skill of hard work and consistency. When he first started painting at the age of 27 he applied those techniques. For many years he sucked at painting and drawing, and even his own brother thought he didn't have any talent. But surely little after little, he became a master who painted some of the most astonishing paintings the world had ever seen.
So for all of you out there who are just starting to learn a new skill, just remember that Vincent Van Gogh was 27 when he first started and has to wait almost ten years before he mastered the art of painting.

Great video, as always ! Since we're talking incremental improvement here : I feel like the background music is slightly too loud in this video.
Hope that's constructive criticism, again great work !
