Something very important was missed after the installation in this video. Make sure you refill the new water heater before turning on the breaker to the power supply for the heater. Otherwise you will burn the elements out in the new unit. Open a hot water faucet in the house and turn the water heaters cold supply back on until water comes out of the open hot water faucet. I agree with the commenter below, the Lowes video is way better even though This Old House rocks!
No water comes out of my water heater at the faucet if the supply valve is closed. But when it is on it does. I am confused about this, since the heater should be full right after I shut it off.
Exactly as the earliest reply said-expect it to go any time now. Mine did. We were gone for Covid when it happened. Usually the water bill is about $45/month. They bill every other month. Only on receiving a $900 water bill forwarded to us that second month did I know anything had gone awry. Because we’ve been there over 25 years (and thus had established a good payment history with them), the water company kindly let us pay that off over time. Word to the wise: When they go, they go. So definitely replace it sooner rather than later, as suggested here.
@@AA-zq1sxwhen you flip a full bottle of water upside down, the water glugs out, because air sucks in through the same hole. Gasoline cans have a small hole at the opposite side of the spout, so that the glugging doesn’t happen at the spout, the air pressure inside the can is able to stay normal because air isn’t forced to enter the can through the same hole that the gas is trying to exit. So the same would apply with the water heater. Draining it will glug and sputter and drain slowly, so opening a pressure relief would help the water flow out, smoothly. Thanks OP for the suggestion btw ✌🏼
desareeplayer, I agree. I hate background music in videos and programs when they are trying to speak to you or you are trying to listen to people talk, it is such a major distraction. Many times, it is so loud it drowns out the dialogue that they are actually wanting you to listen to. It is my biggest pet peeve, and it boggles my mind at how people do not know better and use it.
This has performed exactly as desired ruclips.net/user/postUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 . Basically, instant hot water instead of waiting up to two minutes as it was before. I have had this installed almost exactly one year now and just replaced the anode which is pictured. I pulled it out at six months and cleaned the heating element and removed debris. I would recommend a cleaning every six months and an anode replacement yearly. A mild citric acid and water solution soak really helps clean the heating element and tank. It must be fully disassembled to do the cleaning and that is not difficult but could have been made easier with a couple of design changes but no big deal.
I watched this video on September 19th 2023 at 2 p.m. Central Time. I would like to see y'all talk about an option to add a water filter to the cold water fill line at the time of this replacement.
I see that the installer was manually twisting the wires together. I was always told to never do this. That a pro will connect wires together by the nut only? Curious as to why this was shown how connect this way? Is this correct? Experts tell me otherwise. Just checking if the vid needs an update? Thank you.
Half the stuff they do in this video is incorrect. Home Depot should be ashamed of themselves putting garbage like this out there as advice to the public. Should not even be legal, to be honest.
If you just cut off the water supply and then cut the hot water on at the sink and let it run dry, you do not need to connect a hose, that sounds like an unnecessary step, unless I am ignorant to something
Video is helpful introducing all the terminology. However, does not comply with CA regulations: they require electrical disconnect box installed nearby and also flood preventing device or a dedicated drain. It would be helpful to discuss these things.
6-12 years is horrible, they could be made to last a lifetime. I am a one person household and I cut mine to the lowest setting and flushed it twice over that time period (should have flushed more) and I got my electric short 40 gallon water heater to last 16.5 years.
Might last 6-12 years . SIX YEARS? That's criminal . Only in clown world would that be considered acceptable . Raise a child in your home to the age of 18 and replace the water heater 3 times ? Please .

Moth, it could burn out the elements but probably not especially if it is just for a few minutes. But it is best to do that you are correct

Very helpful video, but there's one step not mentioned for drainage: manually open the Temperature & Pressure Relief valve!
