I like to imagine that they didn’t sit there out of awkwardness, or not knowing what to do. They just saw a man who lost someone and listened to him. They let him talk and they bore witness to him pouring his heart out. They just let it happen, because he must’ve needed it as much as anyone in the room, even if they hadn’t lost the same people. They don’t say anything, they don’t have names, they just exist as a punch line. But just like the girl from jack in the box, they gave him a small bit of kindness on a day where he needed it, where he could feel shitty and let it all go
MegaGamer yeah but because that one doesn’t have any dialogue and is essentially a filler episode with a meaningless plot when you rewatch the episode it all feels pointless. The first time i watched the episode, i felt like the ending joke kinda ruined the whole point of one of the best episodes in the entire show. However, when you think of it, it really doesnt matter whose funeral was it. The speech could have been given in the right parlor, in the wrong one or even while being alone in his bathroom. It would've had the same effect. The whole speech mattered to no one but Bojack, because he wasnt talking to an audience, he was actually talking to himself. So in the end, i think its actually a pretty funny and brilliant ending, because its hilarious without affecting or undoing any of the emotion and realizations Bojack went through while giving the eulogy speech.
I think it wasn't really a joke...maybe it was a deeper meaning. Remember when was talking about ICU and thought maybe for once his mother noticed and appreciated him...but it wasn't I see you it was ICU the ER sign...so in the end she didn't see Bojack. He was in the wrong room but it didn't matter because in the end no one "saw" him anyway. So what difference would it make what room he was in.
It's another example of Bojack not being able to do anything right. His mother would think "you can't even get to the right funeral". I'd like to think that was part of the joke, as well as him not caring about his mother.
It does matter because Bojack was surprised he was in the wrong parlor. None of the lizards tipped him off. This went from a genuinely heartfelt episode to a "How is everyone just letting this happen?" and that takes me out.
Okay, who else agrees that Will Arnett SERIOUSLY needs to consider doing a straight-up dramatic role in the near-future? I mean, this shows he can do drama really well if he sets onto it. Plus, if Steve Carell can transition well to drama, I think Arnett can too.

I feel like the joke at the end meant more than just a joke. Throughout the episode, BoJack talked about wanting to be seen. Not only was Beatrice never seen by BoJack at the end (with the wrong casket), he himself wasn't even seen by the right people at the funeral.
“Unless she just wanted what we all want ... to be seen.” And with that line it beautifully summarizes the contempt we’ve viewed from the eyes of Beatrix on her own life and the hopes of what could’ve/should’ve been. It also beautifully shows that Bojack has surmised this as the cause of his non-existent relationship with his mother for which he can no longer vent further frustration at or reconcile with. The tone of which he gives that final line also shows a deeper empathy and understanding of his mother despite most of his monologue being about him and what he felt. What an episode!
Right?! I paused about 15 minutes in to see how much time was left. That's when it hit me that this whole episode would just be the eulogy and I was amazed.

I loved how in this Episode at the Very Beginning we see Bojack being picked up by his father and getting a one-sided conversation between him and his Bitter Daddy before moving into the middle, where he then explains how his Father died. He realized and always knew just how stubborn both his parents were, too proud, and emotionally detached that they were willing to drown together, and they were forcing him to drown with them! Just knowing that alone is enough to show how much Bojack had to grow, and the final episode showed us that he is willing to make that effort to fight and swim away so he wouldn't be like them.
Stevean2 I think it’s a stretch to say BoJack’s a good person, he’s a toxic asshole though he seems to at the least try to be less terrible but it’ll take a long while until he fully changes.

@QUESEVEA i watch it with subtitles to my language so i miss a lot of the subtle details ...there are too many of those any way ...this show is beyond great
I'll agree that Bo Jack is one of the best shows I have ever seen but Buffy The Vampire Slayer did "The Body" (if you haven't seen this show it is actually quite good despite the silly name but this episode alone is the most gut wrenching episode of television I have ever watched, takes place in season 5 as well) and Shameless has given a lot of hard hitting, daring episodes as well, so I wouldn't suggest Bo Jack is the first show to do something daring or different. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
I don't think the ending was a just a joke...maybe it was a deeper meaning. Remember when he was talking about ICU and thought maybe for once his mother noticed and appreciated him...but it wasn't I see you it was ICU the ER sign...so in the end she didn't see Bojack. He was in the wrong room but it didn't matter because in the end no one "saw" him anyway. So what difference would it make what room he was in. Bojack has been in the wrong room his whole life according to his mother. Picture the wrong room as his life with his mother and Bojack finally realizing he doesn't belong there. Sorry lol this episode really hits home with me. Maybe I'm trying to drag up something outta just a joke...
Blake I feel one it keeps the episode from being too bleak and two shows how deep Bojack’s feelings were. It does make you wonder what he said when he got to the wrong funeral.
What the fuck, I just watched this episode and literally cried tears of empathy shortly followed by tears of laughter. I was in disbelief several minutes in, thinking no way this going on for the entire episode. Halfway through I wasn't quite on board, but by the end it's now a favorite episode. I can't even right now.
I knew there was going to be a punchline at the end. I thought it was going to be very empty, except for PC is a sleep, Hollyhock is confused and that's it.
Honestly I doubt he invited anybody he knew to the funeral simply because of how he was with his mother. If anything I feel like he could’ve just said to hollyhock “she didn’t want a funeral so we just burned her” or something like that.
You have no idea how loud I laughed at this punchline. My god, one of the best episodes of BoJack in terms of emotional impact, and also one of its best punchlines in the entire show. I adore this show, and I'm forever grateful that it had the run it had.
When I first watched this episode I felt like this punchline was in a little bit of poor taste for such an intense emotional episode. I mean the whole thing is a monologue, you can't really get more serious than that. But on rewatch I think this was the perfect way to end the episode. Ending it naturally with it actually being Beatrice's funeral would have been fine, but this was such a wonderful choice because even though these people he spoke to were complete strangers to the entire situation, they listened. They gave him all the time he needed to talk about his mother that just died, even though they were grieving their lost loved one as well. Just like the Jack in the Box worker, these strangers that give Bojack these minor acts of kindness already show so much more compassion than his parents ever did. I guess these strangers, letting him vent about his loss, were the only ones that actually DID see him. And even the part about drowning together, the strangers in the audience are an improvement from that because even though these people and BoJack are all suffering, the strangers are helping BoJack to swim.
It's amazing how great the "One actor theater" episodes are. Will Arnett in this and Peter Capaldi in Doctor Who's Heaven Sent deserve an award for their episodes.
This was already mentioned in a Johnny 2 Cellos video, but one comment mentioned how BoJack knew he was talking to an audience full of lizards and couldn't put two & two together that he might have been in the wrong funeral parlor. Since he knew so little about his mom as a person, he just thought she was friends with a bunch of lizards.
It's not even a bottle episode, the bottle episode was “Best Thing That Ever Happened” where Bojack and PC spent the whole episode in a restaurant. This... is just monologue. Superbly written monologue.
maybe im using the term wrongly, but to me a bottle episode can also be classified as an episode where they needed to work around their budgetary limitations. in live action, that would be an episode where they only shoot in one location to cut costs, but in animation, they could save money by only having a couple of backgrounds. i could only count three main shots, including that last one of the audience, plus the mini flashback bojack had of his mom dancing. tl:dr, i think this episode was made cheap. thats doesn't mean it's lacking in quality though. the writing more than made up for it, and the very limited shots made the punchline work.
I was glued to the screen during this episode and in disbelief, and this ending just caught me off guard, the way it instantly cuts to bojacks upbeat credits theme after he says “is this funeral parlor b”? Is just amazing I had to laugh.
NGL I burst out laughing when he said “well no point beating a dead horse” and laughed for a full 2 minutes and missed the ending and when I saw the ending I laughed for 2 more minutes.
Yes, I will wait 25 minutes for a joke if it leads up to a punchline like this. Overall though, enduring this lacerating episode should be added to the list of things you should be able to call in sick to work for the next day.
i love it, all that time he spent spilling his soul out about his relationship with his mother, only to realize he wasn't even in the right funeral home lol
did bojack not wonder why the room was full of lizards? did he think his mom was friends with them? also don't they usually put photos of the dead person at funerals?
Finally, he had a tiny moment of realization, the divine revelation, about how his mother wanted the same as him: to be seen. Bojack is not the only victim. They both turned the head away from each other, they both are victim one of the other. Okay, she was the first to do so, but Bojack reflected that behavior all his life, even in his 40s. That's what happens when we stubbornly refuse to question our shit; when we refuse, day after day, to pay attention to what is painful yet important.
But just like the girl from jack in the box, they gave him a small bit of kindness on a day where he needed it, where he could feel shitty and let it all go
that is the most profound analysis and I love it very much. Thank you.
I feel even more sad for Bojack if he was only there because no one else attended Beatrice's funeral. God bless this episode. April 10, 2020, 10:46pm

were these lizards crying ? cuz i was
they are called mourning geckos.. literally, look it up
@QUESEVEA
i watch it with subtitles to my language so i miss a lot of the subtle details ...there are too many of those any way ...this show is beyond great
@@Originalcrf holy shit
This episode is literally the first time I've seen a show that has made me cry. It was definitely something fantastic.
It was kinda sweet that the lizards never interrupted him and just let Bojack vent.
I would too
1:23 would you look at that, one of hollyhocks dads
No other show will ever dare to air episodes like this... BoJack Horseman it's truly remarkable.
What about classic Simpsons, Duckman or others?
I think the writers of "Bojack Horseman" just wrote the best ever one man play.
Bojack is the only one who can make his mother’s funeral about him lol
His mother doesn't deserve a moment to be seen
The organist/sound effects guy for the funeral still did their job in the beginning though
Times like this, everyone needs a hug, regardless of background! 😊😊
Funeral Parlor Bea.
If anything I feel like he could’ve just said to hollyhock “she didn’t want a funeral so we just burned her” or something like that.
considering how much smoking she did it's impressive she lived untill the age of 80
The only show that I can make me go from wiping tears from my eyes to laughing and not have it feel awkward
You have no idea how loud I laughed at this punchline. My god, one of the best episodes of BoJack in terms of emotional impact, and also one of its best punchlines in the entire show. I adore this show, and I'm forever grateful that it had the run it had.
You'd think he'd find it wierd his mom knew a bunch of gecko people.
This made me reflect about my mom -_- I love hate this show.
Same here. I can really relate.
I went from existential despair to laughing so hard I was in physical pain in the span of about five seconds.
One of Television's Greatest Episodes
0:34 essentially what his dad told him in the car
Unironically one of the the best 22 mins of television in 30 years.
She wanted vanilla ice cream, bojack... Vanilla ice cream...
Oh my god, he’s at the wrong funeral the whole time😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Rip Béatrice 1938-2018
One of the most frustrating episode endings after the one with the underwater city.
...ow. my feels.
A show that can make you super depressed but make you laugh hysterically in the last 30 seconds is damn good execution.
I think this is going to be me at my father's funeral
It's amazing how great the "One actor theater" episodes are. Will Arnett in this and Peter Capaldi in Doctor Who's Heaven Sent deserve an award for their episodes.
I Think this is the best episode of all seasons
This was already mentioned in a Johnny 2 Cellos video, but one comment mentioned how BoJack knew he was talking to an audience full of lizards and couldn't put two & two together that he might have been in the wrong funeral parlor.
Since he knew so little about his mom as a person, he just thought she was friends with a bunch of lizards.
what a great bottle episode!
Wait, wait, wait .... Is that the horse from Horsing around?
Whenever I watch this episode my brain assumes that Bea is in that casket right up until the last moment
NGL I burst out laughing when he said “well no point beating a dead horse” and laughed for a full 2 minutes and missed the ending and when I saw the ending I laughed for 2 more minutes.
20+ minutes talking about his mom, dad and childhood, so emotional, then delivered the best punchline in the show yet. I love this show!
By far one of the best tv episodes ever
such a brilliantly written episode, hands down ❤❤
With butterscotch and bojack the only characters with lines it make me think damn Will Arnett deserves alot of props for this episode
Yes, I will wait 25 minutes for a joke if it leads up to a punchline like this. Overall though, enduring this lacerating episode should be added to the list of things you should be able to call in sick to work for the next day.
Every time BoJack says something meanigful, no one important is around to hear it
Stunning voice acting by Will Arnett
Bojack's Neflix 'Stand Up' everybody..
This episode will either crack you up. Or Piss you off. But it’s so stupid it’s hilarious
i love it, all that time he spent spilling his soul out about his relationship with his mother, only to realize he wasn't even in the right funeral home lol
One of the most saddest, depressing and evil episodes ever!
i feel like Bojack wanted to tear up at that gulp but like he said he doesn't cry in public. I could be looking way too much into it tho
Was I the only one that saw this coming?
You know, you’d think he’d realize he was in the wrong funeral parlor as soon as he saw there were only geckos inside when he first entered the room
another scene that got me teared up until that joke and i laughed like a maniac
I love that in Season 6 when they're going through all the terrible things Bojack has done we see: 'Ruined Lizard Funeral'
Plot twist, that churro costs allot more than he could ever afford.
Because it was free.
This episode punched me.. it's crazy.. I cried
"my mother is dead and everything is worst now" - BJ.
Lizards are very decent people
i see no one else talking about it but the end of this amazing episode is in my opinion the single best joke of the entire show
Y pensar que nunca iban a igualar el remate de "fish out of water"
Me encantaron ambos remates. Y como son episodios "contrarios" en cuanto a como se expresa Bojack en ambos.
did bojack not wonder why the room was full of lizards? did he think his mom was friends with them? also don't they usually put photos of the dead person at funerals?
BOJACK FINALLY GOT THAT EMMY NOD FOR THIS EXACT EPISODE! YEAHHHHHHHH
And yet it didn’t win. What were the Emmys thinking?
When people say show don’t tell is the only effective way of story telling
Finally, he had a tiny moment of realization, the divine revelation, about how his mother wanted the same as him: to be seen. Bojack is not the only victim. They both turned the head away from each other, they both are victim one of the other. Okay, she was the first to do so, but Bojack reflected that behavior all his life, even in his 40s. That's what happens when we stubbornly refuse to question our shit; when we refuse, day after day, to pay attention to what is painful yet important.
