  • This is the blue chip stock of the sportscar world
It’s not super sexy and it’s not super flashy
But it will be your best friend
Traces its name back even before the AE86
But 2012 we had the scion FRS
This car has had many names
This now is only the second gen since 2012
And the second gen is the first time we see the GR designation
    GR is toyota’s sportscar lineup
Much like TRD is now their offroader designation
Until very recently toyota’s GR lineup was made up of two cars
Neither of which were totally toyotas
You have the Supra which is a BMW, but im not mad about it
And then you had this which has a Subaru engine
We’ll get to that more on the drive
    -
    Trueno Blue
Premium package which is another $2500
    18 inch black wheels
    Michelin PS4 tires
I was incorrect in the track video, the manual also gets PS4, not PS4S
    Functional aero
    Black wing mirrors
    No sunroof cuz weight
    Exaggerated lip spoiler (premium)
    Trunk release button
    Bumper appliquae
    Dual exhaust sounds horrible
    -
Trunk is smal, but so is the rest of the car
But you can drop the seats to make it really useable
    This is a 2+2
Makes it SO much more practical than the Miata
The front is actually pretty comfy
    Seats are good
    Alcantara, leather, heated
Aside from the digital cluster though, everything is pretty basic
    Touch screen is basic
Reverse camera is classic bad toyota
Get car play and it works well
Other than that i think this interior was designed in 2006 by Xzhibit
    -
    Pin it
    2.4L boxer 4
    228 hp
    185 lbft
Doesnt sound like a lot, but like 10% increase over last year
BUT the best thing is they fixed the torque hole
Finally pulls strong at to the line
    6 speed auto here
    Yuck
    Torsen LSD RWD
    5.5ish seconds to 60
But that’s not what this car is about
This car is about lightness and dynamics
    Engine is mounted low
    The steering is good
    The damping is good
    The balance is good
As we saw on the track
On the road there are, of course, sacrifices
    Pretty bumpy
    Pretty loud
    -
    Competition
    Miata, obviously
    Not as practical, more floppy
    Elantra N
Rowdier, more solid feeling, but wrong wheel drive
    GTI
    See Elantra N
It’s between the Elantra N and the 86 to me. And it comes down to this. If it’s your only car, Elantra N. If it’s a weekend toy 86. easy

Don't know why people keep hating so hard on the auto. A lot of people will have this as their only car and commuting an hour in traffic with a manual is no fun. Sure on a back road and just driving for fun the manual is better but with the auto you still get the great driving dynamics and handling of the car which like you said is the main sell. Trying to shame people for wanting a lightweight great handling car that is an auto is dumb and serves no purpose.

Imo I'd rather have something like a mustang ecoboost for the price if it's a car with an auto i need, it won't beat the 86 on a track but i think it might be a better daily

You make it sound like driving a manual in traffic is such hard work. It's not. At all. For people who are used to it, they don't even think about it. It's not hard on the leg, it's not fatiguing, mentally or physically. It's not anything. It's second nature, easy as pie. The only time it's an issue is if you're talking about someone who's only driven automatics and/or doesn't know how/doesn't want to drive a stick. People who grew up driving manuals don't give it a second thought, especially given how light the clutches are on these modern manuals.
This is much ado about nothing. Besides, the automatic option here is not a super-fast, slick shifting Porsche PDK. It's a slow, crap tranny. It's not a decent alternative to the manual. Bottom line, it's a sports car, not a Camry. Quit whining about driving a stick in traffic. It's not a big deal.

@@awesometico The ecoboost isn’t naturally aspirated and isn’t a real pony car.

@@rasundesilva6088 "not a real pony car" don't really care, yeah it's not naturally aspirated but for an automatic daily that makes more power and has more comfort and equal or better gas mileage i think its a no brainer.

I'm really glad the Premium doesn't automatically include the extra duckbill in Belgium, it's optional.

I owned an auto GR86 premium for a few months (sold when my bronco came in). The only thing I did not like about the auto is I could not go as psychotic as I could with a manual. Also, the gas mileage was crazy (30+ MPG) when not driving like a Shrew on crack. The adaptive cruise control with the Subaru eyesight system is baller too (eyesight is not on the manual).

Slip in a supercharger rather than a turbo so you don’t kill the personality and your good to go

You do get blind spot monitoring with the manual. And thank GOD it doesn’t have adaptive cruise control, Toyota’s system CANNOT be turned off and it’s horribly intrusive and terrible.
