I just want for a game to not sabotage my attempts at replaying with stuff like unskippable cutscenes or tutorials stopping the gameplay. If I enjoyed the game for the first time, it's likely I'll enjoy it the second time assuming I'll be playing and not waiting for cutscenes to be over.

    • @mick9707
      @mick9707 6 месяцев назад +9

While cutscenes should absolutely be skippable, especially on a second playthrough; you can enjoy a cutscene more than once sometimes.

In my opinion it depends on the game type. Story based games really don't need replay value. But if you're aiming for a gameplay first type of game then yeah, I totally think a game should have areplay value.
But honestly I agree with your point at the end. I dont think a game ACTUALLY needs anything extra to even warrant another playthrough. It just needs to be fun.

Even a gameplay focussed game can be really fun to just play through once. Although, if a game has really good gameplay, it often will be fun when you play it again. Regardless of whether you actually choose to replay it or not.

I sometimes feel weirdly guilty when I say "x game is one of my favorites" when I've only played it once.
It's ultimately a pretty silly response. If I like a game a lot and only needed to play it once that probably says a lot about the game.

The replay value needs to be that the game is good enough that you'd willingly want to start over by your own choice because you want to experience it that much.
These games with artificial replay values completely fall flat on it and more often than not they hide behind "replay value" as a cheap excuse for lack of content.

It's very interesting how you compare wanting to replay a game with wanting to rewatch a film and saying no one cares, when sometimes a film can also have more in them through a second viewing, especially the film you showed saying that (Decision to leave) which is a film that I actually want to rewatch.

To me, my favorite games are like my favorite albums. My favorite games of all time will never be a game I only played one time, just like my favorite albums will never be something I only listened to once. Sometimes replay value is baked into a game on purpose, sure, but the best games are the ones that you just WANT to play over and over again because of how fun they are.

  • @marshallteach9006

Personally I don't care about replay value. There are so many great games available, I don't need to spend hundreds of hours on the same one... And like you said, a game can be replayed as long as it's fun. I regularly replay my favorite Telltale Games even though the story doesn't change and I keep making the same choices every time, hell I've even managed to play Obra Dinn 3 times despite it being one of those games where knowledge is everything, like Outer Wilds.
I understand people wanting to get the most out of their money but it's kinda sad to think about the second run of your game before even starting the first one.

I replayed all the Soulsborne games many times casually and with self-imposed challenge runs. And with Dark Souls 1 and Remastered, I decided that speedrunning would be a great idea to finish it a couple times more. That was the first game that I really committed to learning how to speedrun, and even though I did not finish all of the runs, I definitely extracted so much fun by approaching the game with such a narrow, goal-focused mindset (that being, to try and perfect every section of the speedrun route).
Great video, and I appreciate all the points that you made. I love to replay some games, and some of my all-time favourites I have actually one ever finished once. I think I want to keep those cherished memories buried and not possibly ruin the nostalgia. Some games that you revisit are fine, but revisiting certain beloved games might actually cause you to fracture your fondness of it. So it is best to think before you replay your favourites.

I just watched your video on finishing games I don't like since the title resonated with me and this video. It's the first time I found a content creator with the same weird-ass mentality like me. I don't feel compelled to replay games and I am just working on my 400 game-long backlog which I started in 2020. Been chipping away at it after wrapping up college since I had more free time and I am at 134 games left. I finished the mid games first to get them out of the way and I played them because I don't like the idea of it sitting there and would rather check it off. It's because of this, that I actually gravitated towards the more focused linear games over the bloated and meandering open-world games. The best open world game I've played was A Short Hike due to how dense it was and the Open World helped with the experience.
Anyway, I'm just commenting for the algorithm anyhow. Good videos man

I agree with you, if I'm playing a game where replaying isn't the focus (roguelikes and similar) I'm satisfied with a really good first play through.
Examples: CrossCode, Cat Quest 1 and 2. I really enjoyed them but I don't really feel the need to replay them.

    This is put pretty well.
If a game has all the replayability mechanics in the world, but if I don't like it I'm not going to replay it. The game can have absolutely no replay value and be exactly the same as the first time, but I will be more than happy to replay it if the game is simply good, like SotC, Ico and The Last Guardian.

I feel like there is certain types of games I like to replay, but not all types of games. The types of games I like to replay are RPGs with different builds, and games that are fun to master so I can play those games either on a harder difficulty or play a previous level that gave me a hard time very quickly which is just so satisfying to do.

Replay value is the most important thing like I can't stand sonys new approach with linear hand holding games with shit gameplay, but replay value can vary wildly for me different ways to build my character, diffrent endings based on your actions not some cop out shit like needing to collect all stars like in mario, pvp or coop based modes, and simple as it gets just going for high scores

Before I’m gonna watch the video. There are two key factors for me when it comes to replay-ability:
    1. If the game is so much fun to through and has a new game plus. My examples include Resident Evil 4, Dead Space remake, Gravity Circuit, Armored Core 6, Sonic Frontiers, and Devil May Cry 5
    2. If the game is so tightly designed from start to finish that I will get tired of replaying it even when it has nothing new to offer. My examples are Spyro trilogy, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, A Hat in Time, Psychonauts 2, Sonic Generations, and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

Lies of P was a game that I loved going through. I went through it 6 times, and I’m still going for my level 1 no death run.
I platinum trophy’d it, I played level 1, I did different builds, only boss weapons, randomizers. It’s a game I can play over and over again and it stays on the same level as my favorites like Arkham City or Rayman Legends. I just have those set few games that make me feel comfy in playing through them again. Usually, though, I play once and I’m done even with newer games I love like FF16… but that game is also very long, so that might be why I don’t replay it.
For me, the only games I seek replay value out of are ones that have different story endings (outside of my comfort ones), which is why I also replayed the Infamous games too.

Now i value replay value but a different kind I'm a firm believer in making your own fun in a games like fighting a boss in a way not intended or replaying the game within one of its mechanics but only games with many choices can allow for doing stuff like that. That is the replay value i want not new game + or tons of achievements

To me personally replay value is important because I can't afford a lot of games and when I do most games don't run on my potato pc. So replay value really helps in extending the shelf life of the few games I can run and afford. With that being said.. I 100% agree with all of your points that replay value shouldn't be forced upon every game unless it's build around it, and devs should just focus on making a fun game and the replay value will come naturally with it.

Some games these days are so big, and some are also complex, that replaying them takes a very, very long time.
    I love story games.
But to replay something large-scale like Baldurs Gate 3, The Witcher, or Red Dead Redemption 2 is an unaffordable luxury. So I try to complete the game to 99% on my first playthrough.
It is very, very difficult to replay such giants. Even if I'm interested in replaying only main quest again.

I'm not into replaying games when there's nothing new and i prefer highest difficulty from the begining, so i can't really relate to replaying Doom 5 times in a row. I think because i usually play on hardest - i die and restart so many times that it feels like playing a game two or three times. Like God of War on the last difficulty i died so much that my play time is probably more then two playthouths on normal of another person. So when i finished i had quite enough.

If a game doesn't offer fun and engaging gameplay, I'm not interested. Achievements don't matter to me; I prefer real rewards like secret levels or weapons. Let's be honest tho, in most cases 100% achievements and 100% completion are two different things, from my experience at least half of achievements are just random tasks that have nothing to do with completion, like kill 100 of a particular enemy, while other tasks that are required for 100% completion don't even have achievements for them, that's why I make my own 100% completion lists separate from the achievements, for me it's not about the platinum, if anything the trophy/achievement notifications are annoying and I usually turn them off, but it's about the dopamine and sense of achievement I get from actually getting actual 100% completion on a game, especially when it comes to RPGs because they tend to be the longest but most fulfilling games

I disagree sort of. In my opinion the primary artform of a game is the gameplay, not the story or the visuals or sound (though the last two do have a lot of interaction with the gameplay). The best games are the games with the best gameplay, for which you'd want to go back. Story or the "experience" of the game to me is pretty unimportant. My favorite games are short games with extremely consistent player mechanics, with the game being generally consistent but not completely, and also hard enough that those small differences can make it exciting. Shootemups are imo the most pure best type of game genre, because it's completely linear and it autoscrolls so it forces you to move to the next part of the game, 8 way movement is extremely consistent and movement is easy and it's up to the environment to make the game. I agree that you shouldn't make games longer than they need to be, but if there is good gameplay you'd want to replay it automatically.
    Story based games are lame.

Games like The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are absolute Masterpieces worth playing, but most people won't even bother replaying them soon enough. Yet, Devil May Cry 5 and Armored Core 6 are very replayable titles with enough variety; does that mean they're better games than TW3 and RDR2? Not even close.
Many games will be replayed in weeks or months, regardless of their length, because they're fun, not because people arbitrarily think you need to finish the game in 4-8 hours to have replay value.

Some people actually would consider DMCV and AC6 better games.
Some because they’re more replayable, others because they just think they have better gameplay.
I prefer Witcher 3 myself, just saying that it’s not a given that Witcher 3 and RDR2 are better.

@@dm8in Depends on your tastes and what you want out of game design. DMCV and Armored Core aren’t better in my eyes.

In my eyes they are, well at least dmc5, maybe not ac6, dmc5s gameplay is perfection, the pacing is great, the music is perfect, the level design is great, the story is amazing, its just a masterpiece of a game, all killer no filler.@@mick9707

@@dm8in As the previous comment stated: the better games are the ones you enjoy the most; positives and negatives tend to change from person to person.
I adored DMC5 and have nearly 100 hours on AC6, but I feel that, overall, they're not as fulfilling as RDR2 or TW3. And keep in mind, I'm more into RPGs and action games.

    Yeah dude, you are weird...
But not so much, i hardly play a game twice too, but theres some exceptions, from your list only DOOM i play twice in a roll... but theres two games i can stop playing, wich are X4 and Cyberpunk 2077, X4 i have at least 5 playthroughs, and Cyberpunk i have four...
Cyberpunk i come back more because of the gameplay is insanely good, and X4, well, X4 is because it is my dream game, when i think about space, theres no better space sim than X4, when i'm in the mood for some space game, is X4 wich i would going to play..

What I want from New Game+ is to be able to go back and redo the story mode with all my weapons and gear from the last run and just have a blast being super powerful and well prepped or, like Dark Souls for the difficulty to increase and basically have a very similar experience but slightly different, kinda like drinking pepsi and then pepsi with lime, its practically the same drink but I am drinking it because I like pepsi and its just got a slight change in flavour, it keeps it fresh and interesting bit longer while giving me the similar experience of something I already enjoy.
