@@VanessaJoy The other day I shot a video portrait of a model under the sun at 29º, I had no heating problems, although I cut the recording, I don't do very long, I also carry a small fan on my rig 😁
The R8 has a mechanical second curtain shutter, only the first curtain always electronic. The 6fps mode using this hybrid shutter mode, which eliminates the rolling shutter effect. The picture quality exatly same as the R6mkII, they are using the same sensor and electronics.
Hmmmm I would say this R8 has a much better focusing system, which for me is huge when it comes to which camera I’m gonna like best. You focus fast and accurately, it’s a win for me.
Thank you for the information trying to decide I do a lot of indoor video and some landscape photogrtraphy Canon r6 ii is really nice but higher cost always trade offs
I just bought an R6 ii, but the R8 size is so much cooler, it reminds me of film cameras, and having to carry the batteries is a bit like carrying film. I'd have probably bought the R8 if it had a few of of: a rear wheel for exp comp like I'm used to, a joystick, a vertical grip option, mechanical shutter for hss wide aperture shots without the bokeh truncation, or flash sync with electronic shutter. If you don't shoot wide aperture with flash and are willing to learn a new control system without joystick or rear wheel, I think this is a near perfect digital full frame camera, perhaps the best yet and a future classic. I may buy an R8 ii or iii in a few years perhaps it will have flash sync with electronic shutter, rear wheel and joystick. I can live without the vertical grip, dual cards and IBIS at this price point. A 35 f2.8 pancake and built in flash would seal the deal.
Hi Vanessa. Love you and love your video's. Thanks for everything. I really enjoy your advise and knowledge. I'm thinking of purchasing the R8 for landscape and wildlife. Is this a good choice? Thx. Bill.
This one: Canon EOS M50 Mark II Mirrorless Camera: adorama.rfvk.net/eoD0X Now I will say the only problem with this one while it’s less expensive, you won’t be able to grow with it and you’ll eventually move to a whole different camera system with different lenses, so if you want to set yourself up a little bit better for success in the long run then go with the new Canon R50: ruclips.net/video/gY6s2M3HU5k/видео.html A little bit more expensive, but better in the long run
@@VanessaJoy Thank you, Vanessa - the R50 is now at the top of my list, and it seems like a great choice! 📸✨ Have a wonderful and blessed Mother's Day!😊🙏🌞🌸
I bought the R8 to replace my 5D3. I love the 5d3, but its big and heavy compared to cameras today. I want a setup to travel with and the R8 fits the bill for me. I have put my EF lenses (24-70 F2.8 and 70-200 f.28) on it and the r8 feels solid with these lenses. I think the adapters are great for the transition, but I notice the extra length. Overall I love R8, even as an intermediate hobbies/ pro-sumer on a budget. I was also able to take full advantage with Canons trade in deals.
I bought a few weeks ago the R8. I work as a photographer (no video at all), mostly I shoot sports (basketball) and portrait sessions. I regret buying this camera because I never thought of checking that Lightroom was compatible with it (tethering). This model came out on February, it's already September and still no update from Adobe. I tried Capture One and it was really bad (didn't connect 7 out of 8 times). I wanted to buy full frame, that's why the R7 wasn't an option. My budget wasn't enough for the R6 ii, and even if I had the money, it's not compatible either! You have to move up to the R5 for that. I know that in the States a professional photographer would've no problem to buy an R5, but there are countries where it's just really difficult to afford such an expensive tool. It's a pitty that no-one mentions the tethering problem with the R8.
That shouldn’t be a problem if you’re using EOS utility to tether. Though I have to say I’ve never tried tethering with the R8 but EOS utility should be able to mend the gap between the camera and Lightroom. Have you tried that?
If you "work" as a photographer, that is to say, photography is your main souce of income, and you can't budget for an R6ii, maybe it's time to think about changing careers.
@@uke500 maybe it's just the part of the world where I live that the price for such camera is just a very significant part of a year's salary. Therefore it becomes a very very expensive tool.
I think you've managed to sway me back to the R7 for my next camera based on your summary as I'm a (hobbyist) stills shooter. Thanks for the great review!
I've got both and unless you need the crop or the IBIS, I like the R8 much better for stills than the R7. Image quality is a lot better, auto focus is better and electronic shutter is much faster too. It's a great bargain.
I have both and agree with you. Unless you need the 1.6 crop, the R8 is generally a much better camera than the R7. I think she really missed some important differences in recommending the R7 over the R8 for stills.
Ooooooh I was so much hoping this would be the unicorn: a slight improvement on the 6 or 6ii but much less expensive. But that tiny battery and no dual card slot are deal breakers. Thank you for the comprehensive subjective take. It pushed me squarely back into the 6 camp.
It's a bit odd of a take because the images from this camera would blow away the image quality of the 6d and 6d2. It can also shoot much faster and have a much better af system. It's also light years ahead in terms of video. The battery is tiny and dirt cheap. I have pocketful of them for my rp (my primary camera is the r5) and they're like $10 a battery. The official canon batteries are like $60
one can use 3rd party RP battery grip and get 2 batteries so you have 2x more battery life and can record about 1 hr of footage. The camera overheats in 4k 60p mode in 15 to 20 min, so not really sure I'd call it a video camera either. it' obviously a hybrid camera
Oh good call on the battery grip idea. Personally, at least for my videos and my husband who does video, we usually shoot is 24p or 30p so a 60p time limitation wouldn’t be a big deal for us. Do you know what the heat limitations are for 4k 24p?? I haven’t looked yet.
The Canon naming system is maddening. Ya think they could've stuck IBIS and a 30M sensor in the R8, kinda like the R7? I need a new camera, but I keep flip flopping between the two.
I'm still shocked that none of the Canon ambassadors that I know of (Pete Mckinnon, Irene Rudnyk, Vanessa Joy) have made reviews for the R6 Mark II after half a year (there were only a handful of "previews" at best). It's the best hybrid camera in the price range right now, and the newest high end Canon camera. The R8 uses the same sensor so actually the noise is better than on the R5 in my tests unless the R8 isn't identical to the R6 Mark II. I notice even DXOmark put out a review of the R8 but not the R6 Mark II. The R6 Mark II is the most underrated camera of the past year for sure (I'd say the S5 II is the most overrated as the R6 Mark II beats it in almost every category that counts but it is hailed as the greatest camera ever built).
That’s because none of us have had the camera in hand and typically we don’t review cameras we’ve never used ☺️ would love to get my hands on it that’s for sure!
Vanessa Joy Another great video and great little camera You can use the RP battery grip to but a caviat is the vertical controls don't work but it gives you extra battery , they should update with shutter sounds like Cat , car horn , whistle ect 😂
Recommending an R7 over the R8 as a stills camera is a terrible recommendation for anyone shooting in low light without flash. The R8 is much, much better, no comparison, in low light. If one has the budget, then sure, the R6ii is more capable, but with the same sensor. As one who shoots a lot of grandchildren pics indoors without flash, my R7 doesn't even get taken to family gatherings anymore because the R8 is so much better. I suspect if she had to shoot an indoor wedding without flash and her choices were the R7 or R8, she'd be using the R8.
“Higher the number higher quality of the camera”, then she proceeds to say the 3 is better than the r5, r6. 😅 Apparently she doesn’t know how digits work.
Informative review it is a solid stills camera and good 4K 60p video capability too. hope to use it more in the future.
Me too! I did not check the overheating limits but that’s definitely something I should’ve put in the review

Vanessa, do you shoot your video with Canon R5 in 8k? It looks perfect. I wonder how close the r8 would be with the same light and lens.
I think this one was shot in 4K. 8 is a little overkill for something like this
Vanessa, do you think 1080 is recorded with oversampling from 2K?
I didn’t read that anywhere. I usually see that with 4K over samples from six.

Yeah and if you’re constantly indoors, you might want to be better low light capabilities of the R6 mark two
how do you do to improve the battery life of this camera? i've been told it's its major flaw
Use the power saving settings for sure - no continuous AF, power saving evf, auto display and power off etc
@@VanessaJoy thank you! about how many photos per battery you get?
