I find this song is more so a vibes first song rather than being one of her story heavy songs. I understand it as it being a comparison between the type of faith that someone has in a god/religion vs the faith someone has in their love/relationship. Its sort of plays with the question “how do you know if they are the one? how do you know its real?” and the answer she offers is “it doesnt matter, I will worship it anyways”

false god is so underrated and this performance is so good. the sax really brings the new york vibe, which was clearly intentional cause she says shes “new york city” ☺️

I adore this performance. Thanks so much for reacting to it. The sax player is Lenny Pickett. He's the musical director of the SNL band. He's terrific.

Ive been loving all your Taylor videos! And even some others, I had a blast watching the Slipknot videos. The very first Taylor video you posted is how I found your channel. As a little girl who started playing guitar because of Taylor at age 12, and grew into rock and metal later on (I’m now 25), but never really had anyone older in my family or anything to share that bond of music with - you’re like such a comforting RUclips uncle or something, lol! I mean that in the best way! The way you appreciate and view all the music you react to is so pure and refreshing.
I’ve been obsessed with this song lately. It’s so underrated. While Lover is a very stereotypically poppy album, there are a few deeper cuts in the album that have more simplistic production and it’s like the drums and her vocals just hit you in your soul, not to mention the lyrics.

I agree. He actually appreciates her lyricism and vocals. These younger people are just not mature enough to understand how far ahead she is of her own age regarding her vocabulary and poetry.

What makes me so happy is Lenny Pickett’s smile at Taylor at the end / her mutual appreciation. He’s been in the SNL band forever, the bands usually behind the host when they do their monologue. So when Taylor did her monologue sing at age 19 he was there!! Would be pretty cool to witness stars like Taylor starting out and see their career advance through the decades.
Also pls react to her SNL monologue song for some laughs 🤣

I became a swiftie in 2019. "You need to calm" down was the song that drew me in, but False God was the song that made me a swiftie. It's my favorite from Lover. I appreciate your reactions so much. They are such a breath of fresh air. Thank you!

I think the word you're looking for is 'sensual' which is a space that people don't often think of with Tay but there are definitely some out there but this is a not so secret secret favorite off of Lover for a lot of people!😅

Even if I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift, mostly because I'm a rock/metal guy, nobody with a set of ears on their head can deny that she's a really good singer. I also have to give you credit for reacting to a variety of music on your channel, makes it more interesting.

Taylor definitely wrote this song about her then boyfriend Joe Alwyn. It’s not a secret that her relationship with Joe of 6 years were a little rocky at times, as she’s written numerous songs describing fights they had. The definition of Fasle God is “You shall have no other gods before me”. So to me Taylor is basically saying their relationship is a False God because of how much she worships it (Joe) and puts it above anything and everything including the Lord. No matter how much they fight they would still worship their love even if it’s a False God ♥️

She's an amazing writer isn't she? Love the jazzy way this starts. The layered sexual and religious references, the many levels of meaning in her words, the story behind the lyrics. Her work is so multifaceted, you could get lost going down the Tay Lore rabbit hole. In this song Taylor clearly identifies the "False God" as the intense all consuming love between her and her partner. She compares their commitment to that of a devotee to their deity. Worshiping at the altar of my hips says that the sex they have together is so good it's like worship, like a religious experience. She's either learned or had a lover teach her the tantric practice of Extended Sexual Orgasm, a practice making sex so intense and drawn out it's hallucinatory, other worldly. It addicts you to your lover. This is obvious to anyone that's been there. Regarding the lines where she says she's New York then says he's West Village, West Village is inside New York. Unlike "Don't Blame Me", where sex and spirituality are also intertwined, "False God" suggests that Taylor recognizes the potentially unhealthy nature of this all enveloping, all consuming experience.
This song is so intertwined with how she wanted Joe so badly, how she masterminded their meeting, how she got him to be her lover and how she was worshiping loving him as well as him worshipping loving her. She premiered this song on SNL 10/5/2019 with a slinky jazz sax played by Lenny Pickett. She also premiered "Lover" that night. You can see on her face how she's totally enamored of and loves Joe. You should react to that performance as well.

Hello. I enjoy your reactions. If you enjoy Taylor’s vocals, there are a couple of performances I would recommend you check out. They’re different but, IMO, both impressive.
Don’t Blame Me from the Reputation Stadium Tour
Wildest Dreams from the Grammy Museum
    Enjoy!

This is a great song but the sound on SNL is always shit. (I don’t know why they can’t get it together after all these years!) Her vocals are always a little off on SNL even if it’s a good performance. The album version of this song is really great.

That makes sense. It is terrible. Coupled with the nerves of a live broadcast it means some pretty bad performances from otherwise great artists.
