That "circular...cyclic motion" is generally called eccentric motion. It's when something rotates off center. In the case of the earlier-video motor and LED PCB, it's eccentric rotation of a stationary component.
Quick question. I want one of these that only shines green. Most it would seem always have green and a purple together or some combination. If i bought one and unsoldered the other LEDS other than the green one would it still work? many thanks.
I had to use one of these for an amateur production, not of my choice! We had trouble working out what DMX channels did what as there was no information provided and, to no surprise, no console profile for it. In the end we never managed to work the thing out in time so a it had to be held up by our sound op and operated digitally (with fingers).
Totally unrelated to the video, but thank you Clive for introducing us to the Wago connectors! I deliver newspapers in the wee hours, and occasionally need to dim down to my parking lights, but I have automatic-on headlights and DRLs that are almost as bright as low beams. There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) from Toyota that details the one wire to snip to disable this system, which is fine and dandy, but I wanted the option to restore OEM functionality when not at work. Obvious solution was a splice a toggle switch into that wire instead. Problem being: I didn't want to cut/strip/twist together/tape, and there was the usual not-enough-slack, not-enough-room-for-hands issue in the dashboard to do this, much less room to use proper butt connectors or to get in there with heat shrink and a soldering iron. THEN IT DAWNED ON ME: The Wago connectors would be IDEAL for this application! Cut the wire, strip both ends slightly, pop a Wago in there for each side of the switch, and voilà, manual override for DRLs and auto headlights, and with a flick of the switch, back to normal operation. **THANK YOU** for showing us those little marvels! Such a time - and knuckle - saver! (Especially when cutting that single wire blindly and my snips went a bit too far and cut two other wires that were vital - another two Wagos saved my butt there, MAN I felt like such an idiot!)
If You're just looking for information how does dmx programming look search for brightpixel. He has a complete tutorial on programming an unknown light.
The manufacturing facility where I work at, they fuse the power wire not the appliance because the appliance will be blow out way before the wire catches fire so its basically wire protection.
@jort93z a UK household circuit is a 240V 32A ring circuit. You need a fuse in the plug or appliance with that kind of power in the wall. Even with the mere 16A circuits that are the norm on the continent, you really want a fuse in the appliance. Keep in mind that most of the world doesn't use 110V mains. We get a lot more power from a standard outlet.
ive got three but one came with the dome smashed so i took it apart. the other two i use over dmx with the rest of my rig they look quite good for the price however when i tested the broken one i found that the working ones used a different dmx profile to the broken one. i also found that the broken light had the most logical profile but trying to change profiles didnt work as they only have one profile
The TM1635 is a clever 7-seg LED driver with a two-wire interface, although it's not listed on Titan Micro's website. Their similar TM1637 is used in the 4-digit modules that every other Chinese vendor on eBay is selling.
In the States we can get those fuses up to 30 amps in that style, glass at that amperage is not good the better fuses are ceramic. Some are available in slow blow for high start loads.
You might want to take a look at the "Music Reactive LED Controller" on eBay (£2.15). I didn't buy one because I think they have an onboard Mic for receiving the audio (I don't normally use loudspeakers, only headphones).
Very nice job of relieving the pressure in your left thumb nail. I've only done that once and didn't do so well. I wonder if you used a tiny drill bit or a hot needle?
The fuse thing has always baffled me, every plug I ever bought in the UK came with a 13A when the majority of electronics needed 3A or 5A. I can only assume there is a ton of electrical stuff in the UK being protected by the wrong size fuse as the majority of consumes won't bother to check. Is this still at thing in 2017? I've not lived in the UK since 2000.
Yes, I'd prefer it if 3A or even 1A was standard for new plugs but as everything is required to come with a fitted plug now, it isn't such a common issue.
The fuse in the plug is to protect the flex going to the appliance. The appliance has to have its own provisions for overcurrent protection. It's possible that a 13A fuse will still disconnect a short circuit (fault condition) in time before the copper reaches 70 degrees centigrade, even on a thin (0.5mm sq.) flex. 70 degrees is the temperature at which the PVC insulation suffers. I fitted a patio wall light recently using 1mm sq cable directly into the back of a 13A socket with no fuse. There was no convenient way to include a fused spur (FCU) in the wall. The 1mm cable was protected only by a 32A circuit breaker at the consumer unit. I was able to certify it to 17th Edition by quoting the adiabatic equation which proved that the circuit breaker (a Hager 32A MCB) would disconnect before the cable got too hot.
The rest of europe uses unfused plugs on a 16A MCB protected radial which leads to the requirement for 0.75mm2 minimum cable size. A 13A fuse will give similar protection to a 16A MCB I guess. For chapter and verse have a trawl of the IET forums. Something to watch is that a lot of the china sourced kit will have a 13A fuse in the plug but the cable is thinner than 0.75mm2 - sometimes a LOT thinner, very cheap IEC leads are notorious for this. Sometimes the plug doesn't even have a fuse either! :o
Have you ever taken apart an optical mouse? been wanting to cannibalize a couple to make a surface motion sensor for tracking eye movement to make a REM sleep cycle detector.
I'm guessing non-UK plug versions will have the fuse holder connected in series with the brown wire. Anyway, why didn't you show us how DMX was implemented in this device?
Timothy Sherratt The job of a fuse is to NOT handle the current, and to fail in a safe way. The fuse MUST be the weakest point in the circuit by a wide margin, so the fuse blows before anything is permanently damaged.
Timothy Sherratt but please also fix that wierd switch in the funky box downstairs, or it will automatically go to the off position. Just take some metal wires and clamp it in the "on" position ;)
heyou Honestly so long as you get a PSU that's rated for 1.5 to 2 times what you'll throw at it, there's no problems with them.. I've used cheap PSUs almost exclusively for years (even in gaming PCs) with no problems
Cheap $15 ATX power supplies leave out filter chokes and create a lot of RFI. If they fail, they may damage anything plugged into them. Name brand ones start out at about $40 and are decent quality.
rocketman221projects Wow okay I didn't realise they were that cheap, I mean I use generic no brand ones that I pick up for free every now and again but I never thought any PSUs would come without chokes/filters
I had a cheap one once, I think it was logisys or something like that. I was using it to power a project. I couldn't get any radio reception near my house, just a loud buzzing noise. I eventually tracked the interference down to that power supply. They had jumper wires in place of the filter chokes and the X and Y capacitors were missing. The power lines in my house made a pretty good transmitting antenna for the power supply.

Hey Clive, I bought one of these to tinker with a few years ago and mine came with 5 DMX channels: 3 for the pairs of colours, 1 for setting a specific rotation position, or speed and direction depending on where it was placed, and the final one for a strobe. The strobe was very weird as it would be delayed by a few seconds before actually triggering, and I never figured out why it did that. Presumably it's just a software glitch? Cheers
Why are there so many unnecessary chips on the main board? What's the point of using a display driver chip for an LED 8-segment display with 4 positions? Couldn't you just hook it straight to the pins? And why use a DMX driver chip? It's such a simple protocol to implement in software. (Which I have done before) Wouldn't it save money to use less chips?
For some daft reason you cant fit the correct fuse into uk mains plugs, pat testers automatically change the fuse for 5 or 13 amps, seems daft to me :-(. I put a 3 amp fuse in lamps as its the lowest you can get.
Hoi Yue, Yes It's silly isn't it, i know we have earth leakage/r.c.d type systems in the distribution box, but i like a correctly rated fuse, just in case :-). And everything that is metal should be earthed.

Hi Clive, I've got a 20 year old Tandy digital multimeter and it needs some new test leads, the dog got hold of the original set which were fantastic. Any suggestions ? its got a max of 20A for current. Great channel by the way, been subscribed for ages, its probably the randomest channel in the world...Pete (Not so Sunny Clacton on Sea, UK)
If you can't get a new set of test leads on eBay or Amazon that fit the sockets properly then you could maybe salvage the original plugs and join the new leads to them.
Peter Webster They generally just used standard 4mm banana plugs to plug the leads into the multimeter, so you could always just buy a good set of modern probes and simply replace the meter side with banana plugs to suit your multimeter.

Could you do a sound reacting one?
I see you bought another Poundland Tommy Walsh special mini screw driver 😉

+Levi Schuck Yeah, it's an RS485 chip.
I'm guessing non-UK plug versions will have the fuse holder connected in series with the brown wire.

ChongX and ChenXing are two common cap brands now. Not sure if one is a counterfeit version of the other.
Are thoes cables gonna last that motion thing all the time?
They're fine stranded cables with a silicone cover like test leads have, but will wear out over time.

Timothy Sherratt The job of a fuse is to NOT handle the current, and to fail in a safe way. The fuse MUST be the weakest point in the circuit by a wide margin, so the fuse blows before anything is permanently damaged.

"I'll just keep bludgeoning away with unreasonable force until it fits"
Phrasing!

I think the word for the movement you're looking for in the beginning is "excentric".
Got one of these, the blue LED's are VERY dim, any ideas? ;)
Since you don't mention a snubber network, I too was thinking you could zing yourself from one of the mains side capacitors.

Maplins own?
you can buy them from china for £10 but maplin sell there own version for £50
Yep. I know. I worked there for almost 4 years. Horrid junk.
what fuse should it have ? lets do the math !
I don't think that it would be too hard to set up a system of brushes and slip-rings with printed circuit board.
Nice fusing on the disco light. The real question, of course, is CAN I COOK TACOS WITH IT?
My dome disco light has an 18650 battery inside, rechargeable via micro usb
I'd go with it's "gyrational" movement.
