Very useful LED pin-spot light that is a good base for customisation.

  • I've looked at one of these before, and the only real change is the better choice of cable and the omission of the case around the internal power supply.
    This unit is fairly functional. It produces a useful narrow beam of light that is ideal for mirror balls and creating a sharp beam through hazy air.
    The power rating on the listing is double the reality, but to the benefit of the LED and driver which both stay surprisingly cool, largely helped by the good (ungrounded) heatsink.
    The optics are pretty good with a glass front lens and adjustable inner lens.
    Everything can be serviced by people like us who have no qualms about changing a driver or LED.
    This is another of these products that is worth getting for the case alone as it could form part of a customised light for use at any desired voltage, colour and intensity.

    Dimple in the heatsink is the ejector pin for the casting mould. They used that section as it is the thickest, so the chances to distort the hot pot metal as it is popped out of the one half of the mould is less. There will be a matching set of smaller ones on the fins at the back as well.

    I made some insulated washers to hold those type of LED's down by using a hole punch on a pot-noodle pot, and then putting a hole through the punched out pieces. Pot-noodle tubs are polypropylene and can handle the heat an LED produces. I didn't want to wait for an order of washers, and enjoy recycling and pot-noodles. I used to work for a disco light manufacturer years ago, and they usually have the light focused down to a small spot just as it hit's the gobo, but have the filament focused a little in front so that you get an image of the gobo instead of the filament, the second part of the optics focuses the image of the gobo. As long as you can focus the LED down to a small enough spot on the gobo you should be good (otherwise you will waste a lot of light), you want it just out of focus so you don't see the LED chip shape in the image. Good thing about LED's is that you no longer need a metal gobo to handle the heat from the lamp - it's considerable even for a small fixture that uses a filament bulb, as I found out by sticking my finger at the focal point.

The real full spectrum lights are the ones based on blue or indigo LEDs with full spectrum phosphor for the rest of the wide band emissions and they emit going clear down to red. The Samsung LM301H is a good example of a full spectrum LED used in grow lights. www.samsung.com/led/lighting/mid-power-leds/3030-leds/lm301h/

    I calculate the beam spread as about 2.5 degrees, compared to 40 for a GU10. A GU10 at 6m has a spot size of 4.3m diameter, which is 17 times as wide, or 289 times the area. At about 70 lumens per watt for LEDs, the spot is receiving 140 lumens. To achieve the same brightness over the whole area, the GU10 would need to output over 20 kilowatts

  • @RFC3514
    @RFC3514 4 года назад +1

    2.5W at 0.48 power factor is about 5 watts apparent consumption (which is what you pay for during peak times in several places), so the 5W on the listing seems pretty fair. It's not a 5W LED (which is not a good way to measure brightness anyway; that's measured in Candelas), but it is a 5W _lamp._

    I was watching you handle the heatsink with LED attached and squirming, knowing that the LED was effectively connected to one side of the mains via the power supply. Somehow I am loath to trust the insulating properties of low cost powdercoat on the heatsink. And I certainly don't trust the white paint used on the LED pcb itself. Could the LED heatsink be safely bolted to the heatsink if the powdercoat was removed from under the LED? ie would the heatsink become live?

    Just a quick question: is the Hopi power meter calibrated at these low powers? Just thinking that dead band and resolution could hide some power consumption. Perhaps an opportunity for a calibration video?

    • @Peter_S_
      @Peter_S_ 4 года назад +1

      The Hopi looks like it could be fairly accurate for dealing with light, low crest factor loads but I doubt they ever receive the necessary calibration step to make them truly useful for the low range. I've studied the CS5463 used inside the Hopi fairly extensively and it's spectacular for what it is, but it has far more capable siblings. I hope to offer Clive an upgrade soon.
