    Amazing how it took 18 years for something to actually get made for Serial 2

      Been almost 30 years and there's still nothing for the SNES ext port

    • @TrimeshSZ
      @TrimeshSZ 5 лет назад +18

      It was actually used for one thing before - Nintendo released a low-cost development system intended for educational institutions called the T-DEV (basically a brown GameCube with twice the RAM and an optical drive that would only read the recordable NR-Reader discs), and the "devlink" download cable that used plugged into Serial 2. But yeah, nothing retail ever used it, which is probably why it was the first port Nintendo deleted.

      Let us not forget about the expansion port on the bottom of the original NES. Nothing ever came to market to utilize it. Even the disk drive for the Japanese Famicom, which sat beneath the system, didn't use the port. It reached up and over and plugged into the cartridge slot. And while Baton Technologies attempted to make a modem peripheral to utilize the port, that project folded before it even made it to the runway. The port was removed from the NES-101 and HVC-101 hardware redesigns.

    • @definitelynotsolidsnake
      @definitelynotsolidsnake 4 года назад +2

      ProjectDv2 the port wasnt removed from the nes it was just covered up, open up an nes and you will see that the port is still there, and there are videos of people messing around with it, someone made something that plugs into the port that allows the famicom keyboard to work, and something that makes famicom games playable with better sound quality ruclips.net/video/KBSdktDG_tk/видео.html

      @@definitelynotsolidsnake I think you've misunderstood me. That video you linked to, and the console you are talking about, is of the first NES model, the NES-001 (front loader). The NES-101 (top loader) had the expansion port removed from the design.

    Just bought one of these SD2SP2 adapters from you a week or so ago. I contemplated cheaping out and buying an unassembled kit, but looking at that small SMD capacitor, and currently not having access to my soldering workspace, nor having a hot air station, my better judgment prevailed and I purchased the pre-assembled version for the few bucks more. Now that I am watching this video and your technique, I feel really good about that decision and the quality of your work. Thumbs up from me!

      Just search "gamecube sd2sp2" on Ebay if you want to buy a pre-assembled unit.
      I don’t think the Gamecube *has* to be modded, But it certainly helps.
      To use this device you will need a piece of homebrew software called "Swiss" which you either have to load from a burned disc (Gamecubes need to have a modchip installed in order to read burned or out-of-region media), or buy an Action Replay disc and load it with that.

    • @mrturbo757
      @mrturbo757 4 года назад

      @@excusablegold so in addition to the methods you described for loading Swiss I've seen elsewhere that it can be loaded onto a memory card that way you wouldn't have to use the mod chip or the action replay loader? Is this true and if not would any version or year Action Replay for GameCube work? As there's quite a few versions from my research?
      Thanks for your time! :)

    • @excusablegold
      @excusablegold 4 года назад +1

      @@mrturbo757 As far as I'm aware, no, Swiss can't be loaded from just a memory card.
      The Gamecube won't try to load software from the memory card unless a program on a disc tells it to.
      There was a device released recently called GC Loader that replaces the Gamecube's miniDVD drive with an SD card reader. Which may have been what you were thinking of. However they still require a little bit of soldering.
      I'm fairly sure that any version of Action Replay for the Gamecube can be used, however Nintendo made the later DOL-101 model incompatible. So you'd need an AR disc made after 2004 (1.14b and up, I think) if you have one of those.

      @codycero1 5 лет назад

      @@RockerGaming Randomizer is awesome, and has a great community, and a number of them also do cosmetic mods for the player model as well.
      I'm sort of a part of it myself, though I've mostly just been experimenting, I helped a little bit on the cosmetic side by finding a solution to modify
      the game's skeletal animation files (though that's still um... in the works, so not much can be expected in terms of custom animations yet).
      I've also looked into some of the coding stuff, using LagoLunatics previous work as a base. He was able to establish a way to modify the game's
      code via assembly. One goal of my own is to try and find a way to be able to reset back to Swiss from in the game, rather than having to hard reboot the
      console each time. I'm using the soft mod method so it takes quite a bit longer than booting back to swiss with a modchip.

    • @codycero1
      @codycero1 5 лет назад

      And speaking of which, if I were to get this sd2sp2 thing working, would I be able to do it without any modchips in the gamecube?
      I believe you meant that any method of booting up the newer version of swiss (that can detect the sd cards in the sp2 slot) should
      work, not just the modchip method, right?

    I just set up my SD2SP2 and it's working, but I'm running into some lag with some FMV openings. • @J-S_93
      @J-S_93 4 года назад +1

      Hi,
      I also, wondered this, but it seems that the game is patched on; well just before boot, everytime you 'Press A' to launch the game ISO from inside the SWISS menu, it seems SWISS does a quick patch and then runs the game, so as it appears to me, I don't think you can load the game and avoid the patch; each and every time you launch a game as far as I know, it has to be patched- it just has to be done; there's no way to avoid it happening in my experience; speaking from my own only, but please, please correct me if I am wrong or am not doing something right.
      My theory is though, is that the patch is used to trick the console and drive into thinking the game is being played optically, when in actuality it's being run off of an SD Memory Card?
      But yeah, please correct me if anything.
