I never found Seinfeld's sociopaths that endearing. Or the show either, actually, tbh. But these horrible people are really likeable and the show works for me. Maybe because It's Always Sunny is not a "show about nothing", but one that uses the fact that its characters are horrible people to mock real-life's expectations vs. reality.
I think a big thing is that IASIP doesn’t try to tell you that deep down, they’re good people. It embraces the gang’s awfulness, punishes and doesn’t reward them for it, and so doesn’t have you angry at them- instead, you’re meant to laugh at them, and while you’re not pressured to feel slightly affectionate to them, that can also happen along the way, without pretending that they’re good people
That's probably because Seinfeld is more nihilist while this is more cynical. Seinfeld's horrible people are actually more relatable than any sitcom, at the end of the day the show is making fun of us as we think we're better than most people, where as IASIP is making fun of Hollywood by showing how awful most sitcom characters would be if you didn't treat their antics as fun quirks. It can be more fun to make fun of people while punching up than the observational humour of Seinfeld where the point is that there is no point, yet we do all the same things anyways.
It’s Always Sunny is basically a show with 5 Kramers running around. It’s different than Seinfeld in that way, but I don’t think one is necessary better than the other.
