    Normal sitcom: The cast interacts with the world and improves themselves.
    Always sunny: The gang interacts with the world and makes it worse for everyone else.

    I never found Seinfeld's sociopaths that endearing. Or the show either, actually, tbh. But these horrible people are really likeable and the show works for me. Maybe because It's Always Sunny is not a "show about nothing", but one that uses the fact that its characters are horrible people to mock real-life's expectations vs. reality.

    • @sebandrews4395
      @sebandrews4395 5 лет назад +103

      I think a big thing is that IASIP doesn’t try to tell you that deep down, they’re good people. It embraces the gang’s awfulness, punishes and doesn’t reward them for it, and so doesn’t have you angry at them- instead, you’re meant to laugh at them, and while you’re not pressured to feel slightly affectionate to them, that can also happen along the way, without pretending that they’re good people

      That's probably because Seinfeld is more nihilist while this is more cynical. Seinfeld's horrible people are actually more relatable than any sitcom, at the end of the day the show is making fun of us as we think we're better than most people, where as IASIP is making fun of Hollywood by showing how awful most sitcom characters would be if you didn't treat their antics as fun quirks. It can be more fun to make fun of people while punching up than the observational humour of Seinfeld where the point is that there is no point, yet we do all the same things anyways.

      Count Pastacreep A lot. Every character actually has a really developed backstory that builds in the background throughout the series and we see how they became such broken people.. Dee’s mom emotionally abused her constantly while spoiling Dennis, and she got bullied for her back brace, and Frank was a bad father, Dennis getting raped by a librarian at the age of 14 which when he got married in an earlier one he states he is having feelings again, like some sort of fourteen year old. Mac never got attention from his parents which is why he is obsessed with being a badass like his dad, Charlie survived an abortion and his mom was a whore, and also Uncle Jack tried to “wrestle” with him when he was younger, there is a lot going on in this show that can be pieced together with observation.

    My favorite inversion of the sitcom formula is the way each episode is written as a dramatic tragedy. Rather than setting out for a happy ending, the hilarity of every episode is the knowledge that the cast will implode and flame out. Rather than a series of happy or meaningful endings, we're left with a series of heroic failures and meaningless loss for anyone who comes in close contact with the gang. This is probably the most fundamental difference between iasip and anything else we've viewed.

Mac accepting his sexuality & breaking away from his dodgy dad - Dee doesn't become so dependant on the Gang's thoughts - Charlie & the Waitress, getting over his obsession - Frank finds a new family in the Gang - Dennis.... well he progressed to full psycho

    Fun fact Mac is actually the father of Dee's baby cause the actors that play those characters started dating in season 2 and were married in season 4. Also, Charlee and the Waitress are actually married in real life as well. And Dennis is married to the girl that he tries to "Re-Dennis" in the S5E10 "The Dennis System".

    Seinfeld and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia share in common the trait of awful characters that never grow. Always Sunny just takes it up a notch both in terms of awfulness (Seinfeld's characters are redeemable and thoughtful at times) and insanity ("Frank Sets Sweet Dee on Fire" / the entirety of Dennis' borderline serial killer personality, etc.).
    Might explain why I like Always Sunny so much, because as I got older I realized I really liked Seinfeld. The ending sucked, but otherwise it was a good show to watch.
