  • The dam in Castlewood Canyon state park was completed over 11 months in October 1890. The dam burst very early on the morning of August 3, 1933. Due to the quick action of the dam caretaker and the telephone operator in the nearby town of Castle Rock, CO, many lives were saved that night. 2 lives were sadly lost in the flood, much of lowland Denver in Cherry Creek and South Platte river was underwater. The Army Corps of Engineers were called in to help the denizens of Denver recover from the disaster.
This video is a hike from the main parking lot near the visitor center on the south end of the park. The park is also accessible from the south end and there are trails along both rims. The park is home to many species of animals and visitors can enjoy the hiking and there are places to rock climb as well for professional climbers. I believe the south entrance trail to be a little easier to the dam than the north, but neither is terribly hard. Be aware you are exposed to the elements and bring water along with other appropriate gear to make your hike a pleasurable and successful venture into nature! Also, if you see any rattlesnakes, don't disturb or kill them. They are more afraid of you than you are of them and they are beneficial to the ecosystem.
