STORYLINE:
With the historic announcement that Barack Obama would be the 44th resident of the United States, thousands of people around the country filled the streets in jubilation and celebration.
In Washington DC, several hundred people gathered in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House shouting "Yes we can, yes we can" and "Obama, Obama."
Most of the revellers were young people who made up a large portion of the voting support from President-elect Obama.
In the crowd were those who had their specific reasons for voting for Barack Obama.
Marybeth Purcell came with her friends, but said a major reason for voting for Obama was that now the country would turn attention to those things that matter to young people, like education.
While the celebration was all in the spirit of a new administration, Secret Service officers made sure that demonstrators did not get out of hand near the White House.

I think the US just got a lot more predictable and less exciting since then. Mainly because of the cultural homogeneity under the banner of an imagined politics encompassing the mass miscommunication caused by bigotry and lack of education and respect for Humanity i.e conservatives. I cry, without fail, every time I remember this moment. It was the first presidential election I voted in. My roommates and I ran up to Times Square to take part in the celebration. The scene was pure elation, just as this video shows. People of every color and age were in a state of bliss; even foreign tourists were cheering and crying. They knew what this meant for America and really, the world. America is, in many ways, a beacon of hope for people all over. No other memory in my life moves me to the extent this one does.
I moved to DC in 2015 and experiencing the 2016 election in our nation's capital was an extreme contrast to 2008. It was like a nuclear bomb went off. The entire city was silent the morning after. We were all just stunned. Imagine a psychedelic trip where you're just so intensely aware of being alive and conscious, yet everything around you feels like a dream. It was like that, only the dream was not quite a nightmare, but no less harrowing. That was also a moment I'll never forget. I've never cried over it.

I finally get to experience 2008 for once
I lowkey wanna go back to this time, I was a kid then but it's still better than now. I'm growing up and I miss my childhood days. Crazy that we probably won't get the world going this crazy for another US president again, even if we do I don't expect it to be any time soon. The joys and screams, not from just America, but other countries too. All the celebrations, the chants, people coming together. It's like no other. Not only that, but I just miss the general vibes from late 2000s to 2010s. Would do anything to go back to that era just to experience it over again.

Watching people so happy and living the moment makes this seem like the 90s, it's almost hard to believe it was only a bit over 10 years ago.. I grew up thinking I always had a screen in front of my face all the time but these videos aren't so long ago, people back then had phones too, there just wasn't something like social media today...

Wethers he wins or not is another story but if he does, the Republican Party would have elected the first Hispanic President. Kudos to you guys for electing the first black President. I was living in Boston at college, and I will never forget when all of us raced to the reflecting pool in front of the Christian Science Center and we just all jumped in with not a care in the world and just rejoiced and made merry. I will never forget the chants and shouts of "NO MORE BUSH" as we marched down Boylston Street. It was such a happy night. My shoes were soaked for days but I didn't care. It was lovely.
