    Kudos to you Sir.
I had to hide my love Zappa and his music from our children.
They knew about Frank because of a poster that was hung on one of the walls in our home.
My son read the Chili Pepper book, and Frank Zappa kept coming up.
He asked me if there was something he could listen to.
I took him to my collection and showed him.
He had never seen it before.
    Fuck!! was his response.
I gave him a copy of the album "You are what you is"
He played that album non stop in his car for about 6 months straight and that was his only play list during those six months.
Every time he played it, he would always hear something new he never heard before on every track.
He has now purchased every Zappa cd.
Sadly he will never see Frank Zappa live, however he has had the chance to hear it live on stage through Dweezil and an Australian cover band Petulant Frenzy.
I too never got to see Frank Zappa live because of substance abuse, one of my biggest regrets in life.
I envy any one who has.
He even successfully got his mother to appreciate the genius that Frank Zappa is.
    My work is done!
There are no ex Zappa fans,
You are a Zappa fan for life!

This was great to watch. I'm 17 and it's been amazing diving into his discography he's just got so many great albums it's really tough picking favourites. Also it's cool seeing other stuff you have which I really like, such as your CAN records, especially the damo trilogy although not to undermine their other albums

I hung out with Jimmy Carl Black at a bar for hours. Place was almost deserted, a table with 4 people, a pretty blonde bartender lady and Jimmy Carl and me. He was not drinking at all and regaled me with stories. He would not allow me to bitch but he did a lot of bitching! I have a ton of Zappa and been a fan since the sixties. What a good time meeting JCB

I had all of those on vinyl, apart from Mothermania, and now, after many moves and upheavals, I have his whole catalog on CD. But I miss my old vinyl. Overnite Sensation was always THE ONE for me though. It was the album that got me hooked.
BTW, I also liked your set on Gentle Giant. I heard an interview with Frank once, where the lady talking to him asked him if he thought anyone else was doing interesting stuff at that time (1975) and he immediately said "I heard some very good cuts from a group called Gentle Giant". The man had taste!

WONDERFUL Video!! I stumbled across this as a "suggested" video for me to watch since Im a HUGE Zappa fan! It was nice to see an Intelligent person with so many Zappa albums discussing them, especially a Black man as Im not too sure how many non whites get into Zappa. I don't mean to come off racisy here and If I do I humbly apologise. As you yourself say in your video, Zappa was trying to "school" folks-ALL folks. He saaterized everything and everybody....which is one of the many reasons he appealed to me. I look forward to watching more of your vids and would like to know more about who you've played with musically and what youre doing musically now?
Thank you for this vid. Much success in the future.

I've been getting back into vinyl and have been checking out the vinyl videos on YT - really appreciate these videos. A few weeks ago I found a mint 'Sleep Dirt' LP. I got rid of my records when I was getting ready to leave for college in '84 and I've never forgiven myself for giving up 'Sleep Dirt' on vinyl, especially after Zappa released it on CD with vocals on some of the songs. Listened to it all the way through and been listening to 'The Ocean...' at least once a day since then =).

Of course there first album is a classic in every sense. I bought this in 69, and I was blown away. Any rock and roller around my age, (I was 17, I living in the San Francisco Bay area), loved this album. Of course it was only played on what we called, the FM underground, IE, KMPX, KSAN, and in San Jose, KSJO. They played album cuts of all rock album. The day Tommy, by The Who, came out, KMPX played all 4 sides, and I bought it the next day. Certain albums I knew, just by hearing them once, were going to be classic. In The Court of The Crimson King, by King Crimson was one of those. This album, when you here it sucks you in. From 21st Schoid Man, (which when you started the song, before a note was played, you could hear the hum of the amp, ((I am glad they left that in album.))At that time, was the loudest song I ever heard but you could not know that, unless you played the album, on the radio it only so loud), to beautiful and haunting In The Court of The Crimson King, the last song, than you are released from the grips of the album. A truly unique experience. I am glad I was brought up in that time, when music was real music, and the bands that laid it all out on the line, and experimented with different styles and songs. There were some that didn't make it. Ahh, the ones that did, changed rock for ever. PS, to all of this, in Dec, 1969 at Filmore West I saw them, in concert. You might think, they could not make the same music they recorded in the studio, but you would be wrong. They did a fantastic job, live, in concert!!! A fact. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ.

Damn.......I haven't been able to keep up with all of your posts but when I saw that you'd done a Zappa one, well, I sure as hell had to watch it!! Beautiful collection, you covered many of my favs! My Zappa is all over the place....some nice vinyl --- "We're Only In It For The Money", "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" (where was that great one?), etc., etc. Some CD's, even some cassettes, probably 25 to 30 different albums, & ya can't help but want more! Cool post Derek, on to part 2.......

Now that is a Zappa collection. Just great to see each copy of the different releases. There were so many. I only saw Zappa one time in Boston. It was the year that they had the voting booths set up in the Orpheum Theatre. I actually signed up to vote as an independent that night. I think it was 1988. Great story about Zappa playing sober. I now love him even more~My two favorites 'Overnight Sensation' and 'Apostrophe' On to part 2~ Thanks Dereck~

Milo Alboniko So, you're Sergio Albonico! (I take it they spelt your name wrong?) "Guitar"s cover is one of my favourite photos of FZ. I have that cover on my wall! Did you take the photo inside of Frank playing the sunburst Strat?

    • @miloalboniko305
      @miloalboniko305 7 лет назад +3

Yes . Well , there is a story behind that cover . I was Frank's photographer for the 88 tour . I had selected great photos for that cover . She (Gail the B...h ) ended up chosing the one I liked the least . Frank was great to work with . Nobody in that band liked Gail . She was always making trouble for everyone .

Milo Alboniko It's unbelievable what she did to her kids in the will, Splitting the Trust up so unevenly, how twisted was that?? Guaranteed to set them at each others throats. I saw 4 shows on that '88 tour, 2 Wembley shows, the Birmingham NEC and the Rotterdam Ahoy, and all with my Sony Professional Walkman in tow! Almost got the shit kicked out of me by the bouncers at the NEC! Those postcards sound well cool!
I'll send you my address in a personal message.

I really enjoyed your perspective on Zappa and loved watching you share your collection. As I write this, I haven't checked to see if you're still active on RUclips. I'm a huge Zappa fan also, and I've started a channel for the VC. A few videos talk about Zappa and the connections other musicians and group have with him. I hope you check it out! And I will certainly look to see if you're still active. But in my "watch next" list, I see you made a video about the Residents and Snakefinger! OMG, huge fan here also! So I'm going to go watch that now!

Great vid, great comments and great collection. Zappa is a pillar in my musical life(music is as close as I get to a god or heaven). He is pure genius and so under explained in the story of music in the 20th century. I love the stones, zeppelin, the beatles etc...and they are great rock bands, but Frank is so much more complex& intriguing(with some effort). Anyway, I now see I have to start watching your vids;Officially a fan. Great collection btw. I am rebuilding mine & your vid gets me pumped

I totally agree with you concerning Grand Wazoo. I graduated HS in 1974, but purchased GW in early 1973. It stayed on my turntable for weeks. No albums prior to it or since have sounded exactly like it. Waka Jawaka was a close 2nd, but not near a satisfying listen throughout as GW.

@SlimeAmTheBest I think it is best to say that I am not into putting down music I don't listen to. People have different sensibilities in regards to taste. Although I might think of some artists within genres as not being up to my personal standard I'm not going to state so publicly. Surely someone would be offended. I don't want to offend anyone.

It's funny you mentioned Andre Lewis in this video, because I was just about to ask you on your latest video whether or not you knew of the man or personally knew him, since he comes from your hometown. I was at a record show a few days ago and stumbled across Mandre's debut album and I bought it based on the cover alone. Brought it home, gave it a listen, and got a real kick out of it. Now I'm looking to collect all of Michael Andre Lewis's albums.
Do you have any of Andre's records in your collection, Dereck? And if you do, would you mind doing a video on them and telling us more about the man. As far as I'm concerned his debut solo album is a hidden gem that people need to know about.

dereck, maybe you've heard this a million times but you really resemble zappa's bodyguard john smothers. saw the grandmothers (later than you did), chatted with don preston and napoleon murphy brock at a meet and greet after the show. it was great.
regarding roxy, as an example of "talking down", would you be referring to comments like, "you're still too adagio, i keep tellin' ya."? obviously this comment would drift right over the head of anyone never schooled in any musical concepts whatsoever.

@TheHeavymetalpenguin I like the original. Frank had it remastered with updated drums but I prefer the original sound.

Brown shoes don't make it, quit school why fake it?
I just picked up a used Zappa "Orchestral", but when I took it out to play it, the record was actually "Overnight Sensation". I wasn't disappointed.
