- I had a chance to visit The Board Room Game Cafe and shoot some video there at their grand opening.
The Board Room Game Cafe is the first and only cafe of its kind in the Maritimes, Canada. Open on Barrington St in Halifax, Nova Scotia, they feature a large Board Gaming area with a collection of 400+ games to play (teachers included!), The Board Room is a unique experience with espresso drinks, locally crafted beer and soda, tasty sandwiches, snacks and a retail area. For $5 per person, you can play as many games as you want, and for regular gamers, every 5th visit is free, via their handy Meeple stamp card!
Bringing your own games is also encouraged, though the $5 fee still applies as you are using the space for gaming.
They are a licensed establishment, and access is restricted to those over 19 years of age during all hours of operation.

Should add, have since had an opportunity to visit. Great location, staff, game selection. We played Eldritch Horror and lost terribly but had a great time.
Perk: They have tables big enough for Eldritch Horror!
only 3750 miles away... totally jealous of everyone who's fortunate enough to live near this place!
Well, that includes me - because although I'm closer.... I'm not close enough!
kingdom board cafe
Sounds like a fantastic place and I wish them all the luck in the world and hope they are still thriving if I ever make it up to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Well done Rodney!
They are still going!
Just went to a similar cafe in LA (actually city of Glendale) for NYE. Shoutout to Game Haus Cafe!
Indeed - great to spread the word about these locations!
Glad you uploaded this Rodney, family obligations kept me away that day but a couple of my friends and individuals in this video Corey and Tony commented that it was a pleasure meeting and playing with you. John is a great fellow as well, haven't had a chance to see him since he was at my place playing Ti3 until 2 am, he is a much better teacher of games than I.
I'm hoping to make it back in January - I'll post updates to our Facebook page - maybe see you then?
Now that's a great idea for a cafe!
This is awesome. Near my place there is a café in which you may play games; but there is no game-buying-option available ...
Also I really like the interior of your Board Room Game Cafe. Looks very nice and comfortable.
It's a very nice setting to game in - as you say, very comfortable.
Great video Rodney! They just keep getting better and better.
Thanks Mike!
Hey Rodney. I mentioned before that I am originalky from Halifax UK. Well I'm just pleased to tell you that Halifax CA looks a lot more sophisticated. Halifax UK is very northern. I suspect that most of its inhabitants would be deeply suspicious of all this 'gaming' LoL.
Beware the dark magic of plastic and cardboard!
Love it. Thanks for making this video Rodney. I would so be a regular here if I lived near the area.
Me too!
Great video and the cafe looks like a lot of fun. Jealous! Wonder how something like this would work here in Dallas...
I'm sure it's a challenging business model, but there are places (like this one), doing it successfully.
What a wonderful place! I wish there was something like this by me
We'll make one.
I feel like there would definitely be a market around here
This place looks awesome. Wish there was one in my neck of the woods.
Did you end up getting a games café near you?
Beer, food, and games! What more does a gamer need. I always did want to see Nova Scotia this is just a plus. I may just have to get a passport.
Bonus incentive :)
Bruges. And Manila. You need those. Props on the Takenoko!
this place looks awsome! wish there was one near me :( seeing this video makes me wonder if you could do a video on breaking into and working in the table top gaming industry, from big companies like GW, FFG and BOW to shops, clubs, videos and cafes. always been interested in the industry but would'nt know just what is out there. love the channel keep it up!
Thanks Josh! I am learning some things about the industry, but I'm no expert in this area yet - I do find it interesting though. Board Game University is a very good podcast on these topics though, you may wish to look it up.
***** thanks!! ill definitely check it out asap
I wish I had a place like this near me
What a great idea :) Good luck with this!
They are still successfully running, and it's become a fantastic (even bigger) cafe!
I would LOVE to open a place like this myself. Maybe before I die. Its good to have goals!
Make any progress on your goal? :)
@@WatchItPlayed Sadly no. Shifting jobs and priorities can make it difficult to pursue goals like this. Doesn't mean I don't still think about it!
Damn, i wish there was one of these close by here. Well i guess i could always keep this in mind for when im bored with my current job :P Would be a fun job :)
Any end up opening near you?
I wish I leaves near there
I want to live near that
Thanks for checking out the video!
Wow has it changed in 6 years! (I mean it's bigger and better) I'm still sad Bedford's BRGC closed :(
Yeah, they’ve don’t great things with the place!
I love this idea. There is a Kickstarter for something similar to this in Orlando Florida. I'd love to have something like this in Jacksonville. Right now we only have the Magic-type game rooms but they're not full service like this.
Any gaming cafes opening up near you in the years since?
@@WatchItPlayed Actually yes, one of them opened up down the street from me. It has changed owners since it opened, but it is run by some dedicated gamers now and is doing well.
@@rjtopper68 Hey, that's great to hear! We had one open up on the island here as well.
great, enjoyable editing. place looks great! (Wonder if business is usually that good)
Most Fridays and Saturdays are like what you see in the videos and Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays are starting to look like the weekends! ~Note: I work at this cafe!
awesome! Wish we had something like this closer where I am. Although there is a game library in a bigger city an hr. or so away (They charge more, but they don't serve food, so that may be why)
These even gotten bigger since then!
Cardline animals? I think I actually have that lol.
-I'm a doctor
- A Proud police officer
-me? Im a game BAoWS
Yeah.. Time to move to Canada.. >.
Nice!
Makes me want to visit Canada! What's the warmest month up there?
I don't think we have anything like that in PR.
Maybe if I hit the lotto I can start one...
June to August are the warmest months I would say.
OK, cool. Thanks!
The card game shown with animals. What is it? I like the artwork.
Cardline: Animals www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/130882/cardline-animals
I want to go. to back I'm in Texas.
Hi. First question, are you still working? Second, how do think is it possible to open game store in small city about 60k population. Thanks!)
I run this RUclips channel, but I don't run that store. That store is still operational and quite successful, as I understand it.
Hi Rodney¡¡ What's the game at 2:40? Looks interesting¡ As always, great videos¡
Yes, I was wondering the same thing. Red Squirrel, Atlantic Salmon and all that.
Cardline: Animals www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/130882/cardline-animals
Thanks! :)
cool
Amazing but How do they handle steals
Not really sure what you mean.
Hey Rodney, I discover something fantastic in this video. Is there a game called ´La Boca´?... It appears many times in the video. Is that name because of the town here near my home, in Buenos Aires Argentina, that we call La Boca?, I think yes, because at the cover of the game apear several coloured houses, and here La Boca, the real houses are like that, different primary colours. I will investigate, may be I am wrong, but... amazing, I never saw a game called La Boca here, so may be is something you have in Canada and we don´t even know it here at few blocks of La Boca... great! Here some data of our town en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Boca
I'm pretty sure it is based on that very same location :) Cool!
After my research, yes. First línes on the box says "a town in Buenos Aires, Argentina" the weird thing is that even when this game is related to us, and when the name of the boardgame is in Spanish, the game does not exist here and does not exist a version in Spanish. Thank to your video I discover it, thank you!.
Anybody know what game is being played at 0:45 - right at the beginning of the video?
Ginkopolis: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/128271/ginkgopolis
What Game is it at 0:48? Would reallly be nice if somebody could tell me that, this looks good :-)
At 0:48, the game being played with all the custom dice is Quarriors. If you were talking about the game just before that, it is Ginkopolis. ~Note, I work at this cafe!
Thanks to John for the assist!
what were the first 2 games they showed people playing? they looked interesting. at :40 and :47?
Ginkopolis and Quarriors.
Thank you! definitely have to check those games out.
So how does it work. Do you hire the game or pay per person or just drinks?
The description for the video gives all the details, but here's the summary. You pay $5 to go into the cafe portion (the retail portion is separate, you can just go buy a game if you want). Once inside you can take any game you want from the library and play it (or bring your own games). They have staff that will help you learn the game if you don't know it (they help for free) and you can order food (you have to pay for the food).
Excellent idea. Is it making money?
+Yuck Fooh I don't have access to their financial records, but they are still in business and growing, so I think they must be doing okay :)
*****
Excellent, As someone who loves board games, I look forward to many more of these places.
Maybe I'll become rich and set up my own!
I heard that you got be 18 to go, is that true?
It's a licensed establishment. You can enter their retail area at any age, but if you want to go in, eat and play games you need to be 19 or older.
This is cool, though I cringe at seeing all those open beverages on the gaming table.
It does take a moment to get used to, but then I must say, it's pretty great :)
What game is at 2:40? Thanks. :)
I believe that is Cardline: Animals: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/130882/cardline-animals
Is this place still alive?
Yep! And it's grown!
What game is being played at 3:29?
That's Kemet. Instructional, and full play through on our channel: Kemet - How To Play
What game are they playing at 3:59?

Anyone know what the game is at 4:00?
That's "Cash and Guns". boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/19237/cash-n-guns
