Honestly... I searched for "Nolan explains Tenet" because that's what I thought it was. Weird that both movies could be explained with that hairpin diagram
Memento is such an effective film. Due to its nonlinear episodic presentation, I can never quite recall the exact start and end. But somehow my mind still remembers and makes sense of its events all at once, tying them together with feeling rather than chronology. A box of loosely gathered memories.
The greatest most gifted director of all time and as far as writing goes his brothers right there with him. I bet one day when his children get older one will emerge as a great writer/director/actor.
In 1997 I wrote to a TV channel a beyond badly assembled first draft of a plot that dealt with an amnesiac protagonist. Instead of tattoos he would avoid the exact same short memory lapses in Memento by a bullet proof encrypted laptop biometricaly assessed. My inspiration was the film Total Recall plus the TV series The X Files and The Nowhere Man. I was glad my idea wasn't a waste (the TV competition I sent the terrible raw text to probably never even saw it, and it was too much of a mess for them to make sense I guess) when I saw Memento. The peculiar short term amnesia I came up with for my conspiracy plot is the one Nolan used. The difference is his story is existential and not merely a puzzle without much substance as mine was at that stage. Although as one may tell by the inspiration my aim was plot driven and I had very little interest in a personal tragedy, which is what Memento is. I replied to your comment mostly because I don't see the primary plot element, the short term amnesia, to be in any way ordinary. It's not truly what the story is about but the instrument for manifesting it, so maybe in that sense it's a deceptively simple tale of loss of all references both material and psychological.

Memento is my favourite Nolan movie. I was so much obsessed by this movie. Watched it so much times trying to make sense of it. Then suddenly I stopped and thought about the character and everything fell into place.
the amazing thing is, as you thematically overlap Memento, Inception, The Dark Knight, Rises and Interstellar, a set of central themes starts to emerge about civilization, myth making, lies for the sake of purpose, and how hopeless people are without those defining stories. It's a sort of tragic but beautiful cynicism. An almost spiritual atheism. It's reminiscent of Neitzche and Jung and the modern work of Jordan Peterson. I'm not sure where Prestige fits into it though, it feels thematically compatible, but not really about the same thing, even though it too deals with lies, story telling, obsession and purpose, but to what seems like a different thematic point.
The Prestige fits perfectly into the central themes you mentioned :) Its really a introspective of film-making and storytelling as a whole. Making a story that is easily followed yet still intriguing is like performing magic. Film-making is loosely based in the 3 act structure, much like magic has 3 stages: the Pledge, the Turn, and the Prestige. I think Angier said it best, "the audience know everything. But if you fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder." Just shows how important definitive stories really are.
I’m not sure it really matches with Jordan Peterson’s philosophy. Nolan just as much indicts the civilization building myths, where as Peterson reveres thenm. Nolan’s representation of these myths seems to be portrayed as an argument. He may have a personal opinion on their importance, but I think he leaves it open ended in his films. The Presitge I think works almost as a meta commentary of filmmaking or even storytelling itself. I just rewatched it and it almost seems to be more about the art of creating stories as much as it is about dual identities, the male ego, or whatever else has been said about it.
Memento has a momentous score. The ending specially is phenomenal. It's truly beautiful. Shame his later films became increasingly empty existentially while needlessly convoluted. He needs to go back.
This has helped underline the significance of his tattoo remember Sammy Jankis. In the objective black and white scene with the electrified puzzle piece we see Sammy keeps making the same error, contrary to all the other people with the condition which instinctively learn through repetition despite the memory problem. Teddy says he's helped him track down John G before and Leonard's killed him, if he's repeated/repeating this over and over he should know what's actually happened. Devesh Pandey tbf he does have far too much exposition and when his characters are speaking normally it’s usually crap but other than that he’s pretty good.
Incredibly intelligent and entertaining. Not geniuses. Westworld, which I believe his brother wrote, is the best series I've seen since the Sopranos. Still, not genius. Just fucking excellent. It doesn't say anything about life that hasn't been said before. They do things that haven't been done in TV or Movies before; timelines, playing with subjectivity, objectivity, complex characters etc. Nothing that adds to profoundly intellectual subjects, hence not geniuses, just incredible filmmakers and TV makers. It's important to make the difference.
As a filmmaker myself, I find myself being very analytical like Christopher Nolan. Everything is intentional when it comes to creating a film. There needs to be a purpose in every scene, every movement, every camera angle, and the structure of a story. I believe that's what separates a legendary film from a good movie. I'm currently writing a romantic drama film that's using this graph, yet not in reverse chronological order. It's hard to explain without any spoilers but I just truly love how analytical Nolan is!
The moment where he decided to draw it like a hairpin reminded me of the moment in Inception where Ariadne flips the squared writing pad over to its blank side and draws the first maze that is different from the ones that Cobb was able to solve too quickly. What a beautiful mind this man has. All reviews of Memento I had seen so far tried to get to grips with the designing principle by numbering the colour and B/W scenes from A to Z and 22 to 1 and pasting them together, but that was too linear - hairpin it is :-)! And I especially agree with the bit starting at 6:43.
After watching this video, and hearing Nolan talk about how the colour sequences are told from Leonard's point of view and the black-and-white scenes are told objectively from the POV of an outsider, I noticed that he used the exact same technique for Oppenheimer. Crazy to think he uses the same technique for two completely different stories and yet makes it equally effective in both films. Truly one of the smartest and one of the best filmmakers of all time.
I would love to know whether, when writing the film, he had already planned what effect he was aiming for with clever edits (such as the black and white sequences juxtaposed with the colour sequences) or whether that idea came to him instinctively (I think that often, the best writers don’t think too much, but have a natural ability to create interesting themes, which they can they modify and justify afterwards)
There should be a rule for ambiguous movies: 10 years after release, the director/writers must explain everything in detail. Is Lenny the same person as Sammy Jenkins? What happens after he kills Teddy? What was Natalie's role?
Jack Carlos come on man it's not that complicated.. of course Lenny is sammy. After he kills teddy he'll probably run off and start the cycle over again. Natalie was just scared and found a way to benefit herself through Lenny.
Jack Carlos This is just my interpretation, but either Lenny is Sammy or Sammy and the whole insurance investigator thing is just made up by Lenny as a way for him to cope with him killing his wife. Kind of like in Shutter Island where DiCaprio's character creates the U.S. Marshal persona to cope with what happened with his wife.
Actually no its not that simple and by many people ( including me ) Lanny is NOT Sammy.Teddy also tries to trick Lenny into thinking that Lenny was indeed Sammy. Lenny was the guy with the short-term memory issues who overdosed his wife with insulin. Teddy says that Lenny lies to himself to be happy. He says that Lenny’s wife survived the assault but eventually was unable to handle Lenny’s situation. Teddy says that Lenny has conditioned his mind with an elaborate lie so that he can hunt down a fictional John G. So that he doesn’t have to live with the guilt of being responsible for his wife’s death. Teddy tries to twist things around by saying Lenny’s wife was diabetic. Why is Teddy lying to Lenny? Well, Lenny just busted Teddy for getting him to do the dirty work of killing Jimmy. Teddy is saying anything he can to confuse Lenny so that he can exit the situation. Teddy knows that he just needs to confuse Lenny long enough to make him forget about Jimmy. Lenny denies that his wife was diabetic. He has a memory of pinching his wife which he, for a second, thinks may have been the prick of an injection needle. But soon enough he recollects the actual event where Lenny is only pinching his wife. Lenny knows Teddy is lying. So yeah things are not that simple and I am pretty sure Teddy was trying to trick Lenny into thinking he's Sammy. But at the end Teddy goes to Lenny and he ( finally ) is being honest. He says that he ( Lenny ) did get the revenge 1 year ago but he does not remember. So that means he ( Lenny ) didn't kill his wife cause he already killed the real guy ( John G ) who did it.
could-you-please-leave? Great... Thanks man. Do you think Lenny will continue in the same way trying to solve the puzzle? What about that selfie picture he took where he's shirtless ?
could-you But Nolan has just finished explaining that the color parts are the least objective and the most representative of what goes on inside Leonard's head. He is constantly re-interpretiing his past. Are these pinching-memories real or are they another of his many means of denial?
The dreamer is the awareness or the real self. Nobody can define it or find it. It is ourself but the mind believes it is the dreamer and that this dream exists but in reality. It is whatever anybody can call it consciousness, god, happiness. The source of everything
Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Inception) is, perhaps named after the Cobb character in the movie, Following? Would that suggest that literally every Nolan movie is connected? Cobb (of Following) could have been within a dream, within a dream, making clear a possible connection with Cobb (of Inception).
I have never seen such a good schematic diagram of how to do discontinuous storytelling in films.... And even an explanation like this will surely encourage amateur directors too
The drawing part was SO GOOD, i thought he would have trouble but it was 2nd nature. I thought the interview was done in half and was getting repetitive but became so good again at the end.

No Indeed and kind of a one trick pony if you ask me
Left -handed genius!
These both are like gods. They give us so much to think of.
*Plays at 0.5 speed* Ah, that's better.
This man is motivation and inspiration
Truly one of the smartest and one of the best filmmakers of all time.
he is one of the greats
The laugh of Nolan at 13:53 i'ts amazing 🤣
He looks so happy while explaining
I would love to know whether, when writing the film, he had already planned what effect he was aiming for with clever edits (such as the black and white sequences juxtaposed with the colour sequences) or whether that idea came to him instinctively (I think that often, the best writers don’t think too much, but have a natural ability to create interesting themes, which they can they modify and justify afterwards)
That's amazing. I love his aproach to film. Thanks a lot for sharing this man!
mother of god, he is deeeeeep
What about that selfie picture he took where he's shirtless ?
could-you
But Nolan has just finished explaining that the color parts are the least objective and the most representative of what goes on inside Leonard's head. He is constantly re-interpretiing his past. Are these pinching-memories real or are they another of his many means of denial?
The hairpin model is literally Tenet lol
Nolan is the God of Cinema 🔥🔥
nolan is the only man who has his every movie is an his master peice
"We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream." But who is the dreamer?"
Dasveiner turiya
The dreamer is the awareness or the real self. Nobody can define it or find it. It is ourself but the mind believes it is the dreamer and that this dream exists but in reality. It is whatever anybody can call it consciousness, god, happiness. The source of everything
His the most knowledgeable director I ever seen 💓💓💓🇮🇳
I think this movie is often overlooked but this is one of the few movies I was so invested in it deserves better
"So you can say the end is in middle"
Thats so nolan😂
love the zoom ins the camera man does to his face at perfect timing like its the fucking Office

Most craziest director ....i hav ever seen....Fucking genius
4:09 can we just appreciate how that guy drew the most straight line ever 😂
thats the thing i too fr spotted and appreciated XD
Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Inception) is, perhaps named after the Cobb character in the movie, Following? Would that suggest that literally every Nolan movie is connected? Cobb (of Following) could have been within a dream, within a dream, making clear a possible connection with Cobb (of Inception).
the "hairpin" in Memento is the "temporal pincer" in Tenet. same structure, different names.
Hearing this we will think how childish GAJANI was😂😂😂lol
Amir khan is a total hack job.
That movie is a giant piece of bull crap compared to momento
@@nikidon99 So yeah Blame Aamir Khan for Everything because he stole the story.
Ghajini was shit tatti....thats called bollywood take a masterpiece n turn it into shit
You gotta blame AR. Murugadoss for not giving any credits.
I have never seen such a good schematic diagram of how to do discontinuous storytelling in films....
And even an explanation like this will surely encourage amateur directors too
man. it's cool seeing him before the inception of his pop-culture phenomenon. like, his prestige has reached interstellar heights at this point.
This man is just awesome
You are a Genius, mister Nolan
He's like a God, revealing the secrets of the universe..
Memento is one of my 10 favorite movies, for sure.
The drawing part was SO GOOD, i thought he would have trouble but it was 2nd nature. I thought the interview was done in half and was getting repetitive but became so good again at the end.
I enjoy listening to and learning from this very smart man.
So Memento is like a hairpin and Inception moves in layers... that makes TENET layered hairpins?
Massive respect for this man.
A shining light in a sea of garbage movies.
Nolan 'til I die!
