  • Here's a Ramakrishnan Murthy performance from the FEA vaults. He was the featured artiste at Sursangam, the 10th Memorial Concert in honour of Prof. Suresh Ramaswamy, at BITS Pilani KK Birla Goa Campus, organised by Srutilaya and co-presented by IndianOil as part of the ongoing "NOW HEAR US" concert series.
In this video Ram performs a composition by Swathi Thirunal in Ragam Kunthalavarali.
He was accompanied by Vittal Rangam on violin and NC Bharadwaj on mridangam, both exceptional musicians in their own right. Tanpura support was provided by R Shivsundar and Darshana Songara.

Very well sung. He is always very good. But is it really proper to begin a kriti with the Anupallavi or Charanam? What was the idea in the mind of the composer when he penned it? I feel kritis must be rendered from the beginning.

Starting with the Anupallavi was a common practice in the older days. Some kritis are almost always started with the Anupallavi. For example, 'Ela Ni Daya Radu' in Ragam Athana. That Kriti almost exclusively is started from the Anupallavi, to the extent that on many instances people don't even refer to it by its Pallavi. They just say 'Balakanakamaya' which is actually the Anupallavi. People even say Shri Tyagaraja himself sung it in that format. One comes back to the Pallavi anyway. Even though I myself prefer if one starts with the Pallavi, there is nothing wrong with doing otherwise.
