I don't think people give Mark's VA enough credit for this scene, he does an incredible job sounding like he's been brutally maimed.
Yet still firm in the assertion that deep down there's good in his Father.
he is
they got his dad to beat him up in the studio for an authentic performance
Fun fact: his voice actor plays gleen from the walking dead
and another fun fact: the twd comic and invincible comic was created by the same man
@@unbreakabledl Well...Mark's VA got tons of practice after he took a baseball bat to the face.
In a way, the fact that he ran away, instead of consoling his son, or just changing his tune like some villains do when they turn onto the "right path"? It makes him seem even more human. In just 5 minutes we see Nolan go through pride, excitement, fury, helplessness, and even regret and fear of losing his deeply rooted beliefs. He undergoes a rapid breakdown of his ego, and realizes that at the core of his soul, he has humanity in him, and he can't bear to let it go. And that "You Dad, I'd still have you" I think really makes him realize what he has done, even if he doesn't regret killing the other humans, he finally realizes that at the core of it all, he just beat his own son, the person he loves and knows the most in this world.
If I may also add to your brilliant explanation, it's also him realising that he lost a potentially viable path with Mark's words. Many people hear it as "I'll still have you" in future tense but the use of "I'd" places it past tense. Nolan has gone way too far to the point that Mark gave up on living the long viltrumite life with his father. A path Nolan didnt even consider until now which is what causes him to see that he had been so blinded by the cause that he didnt see something so simple. Now it's too late.
@@hk1371I'd is a conditional lmao it's not that deep
@@maximus3294 it can be both. A path lost and a path wanted.
In a nutshell, the whole scene hinges on Nolan brainwashing himself into believing he's still a loyal Viltrumite soldier, so he can brainwash Mark into being a loyal Viltrumite soldier alongside him and "Conquer Earth like father and son", when all he wanted was the "father and son part"
Before the beatdown started, when Nolan was going around killing random people and Mark tried to stop, at some points he says something "I was waiting for you to gain superpowers, and I wished you didn't, because now that's the only way"
When Nolan started to grow fond of Mark, he did everything the bad kind of "helicopter", controlling father does believing he's right.
He contemplated Mark growing up as a normal human, having fun with his peers while he would be a good loyal Viltrumite and let the Empire rule on Earth while showering Mark with material things (he mentions Viltrum bringing science and riches to the enslaved colonies).
He contemplated Mark growing up as strong as himself, going around enslaving planet and keeping themselves companies after Debbie and everyone Mark knew died, knowing he cursed his son with nigh-immortality but he could give him a place among people like themselves, at his side.
The moment Mark offers him to just be there, he realizes he already blew any chance of that, so he's left with the only option to flee and crying on what he lost because he believed he could make anything right
@@DrTofu83 The scene is also Nolan trying to justify his lack of empathy to his immortality. When he called Debbie a pet, it's the equivalent to us and dogs/cats, we love them but most not in the same capacity as humans; not to mention they don't have the same rights as us. He had to kill Mark and anyone who resists the Viltramite takeover, he was about to put him down like a dog he loved that went rabid. The internal conflict at that very moment was "what's the point if it doesn't last, there's nothing at the end" vs "If you're at the end with me, it'll be alright". Then the "Dad?", Nolan looks at his son who would share the misery of eternity with him, it contradicts his conditioning/brainwashing.
"What's 17 more years? I can always start again, make another kid!" He isn't telling Mark that, he's telling himself.
The whole fight was basically him beating the shit out of his son and slaughtering people so he can convince himself he's in the right.

So ignoring the mem stuff for a second...you can honestly feel Nolan's hatred for himself and how he is trying so hard to convince himself that he doesn't love Mark and Debbie. However he does love and care about them. Those 20 years didn't mean nothing to him...they meant everything to him.
Humanity. A blessing, or a virus?
It's used in stories that involve humanoid races, and in the end, acquiring that virtue changes the tides of a battle or story.
Honestly, I think he simply had a psychological break, seeing Mark with his powers. He had a moment of despair where he felt it was ‘all going to be over soon’ (the comics stated he had a little less than a whole 1000 years to himself with the planet, so that sort of runs home this theory to me, since if he was acting logical, then he wouldn’t have acted so soon)
@@Norinia i think i agree with this

Yup
I don't think the Viltrum empire was really apart of what he was thinking at that moment. I think the Viltrum empire culture doesn't really put any value on relationships and connections with other people as a whole. I think Nolan assumed that he would have to say goodbye to Mark after some time, whether from him being assigned missions by the Viltrum empire, or Mark having to be disposed of or some other scenario would come up that would have him leave. @@PrimeVideoNL hello
gonna always cry when mark says "you, dad"
10/10 right in the feels
This entire scene is a masterpiece.
He wanted to be a loyal soldier to his home, realizing too late that he had become a family man on an alien planet. So heart breaking when he finally realizes what he was doing when he looked at his own bloody hands.
This is like vegeta when he got possessed by babidi
Just like reiner in aot
@@johnny44937 only thing is reiner has the “excuse” of being radicalised as a child, i guess omni man was too but like this a grown ass man who clearly has felt love who still went to do this shot lol
@@anikinfernandez5990well, he also probably has a few thousand years so I think it's a tiny bit difficult for him to get
@@Katfish1216 duuuuude.... yess!!! Definitely vegeta!!
Are we already going through a Mandela Effect? THINK PEOPLE, Omni-Man only says think once to Mark, not twice!
Most underrated comment here. Does Omni man also say think once in the comics?
@@leosolcanonizado4065 no he says it twice
wow true
He does say it twice in the comics though
He says it twice in the comics. The show is almost word for word in some scenes lol
I think it's a really good lesson of : some things can be really precious even if they don't last long and are fragile, the whole sense of his "mission" after the flashback and his son's sentence kinda shattered as he left the planet
"What will you have after 500 years?!"
"Pictures of Spiderman."
I like how Omni man knocks Marks’ teeth out, then when he flashbacks it shows young Mark playing baseball with his baby teeth missing. Such a contrast. It’s this attention to detail that makes this show so amazing.
Wow, I never noticed that. That's kinda deep.
hes also looking at his face at the end of the flashback w no teeth and when it transitions back well yeah
Knocking his teeth out reminded him of little mark and that moment. That's the reason for the flashback. Maybe Omni-man does have some humanity.
I mean I think the scene was specifically zooming in on this fact. I'll say that it was detailed but I don't think it's attention to detail or anything that was unexpected lol
But when Mark recovers the teeth grow back! Amazing recovery skills!
Jk Simmons’s voice acting is so good. I’d steal his vocal cords if I can
I’d steal his talent and experience. He could easily be a mono voice, but he does SO MUCH with each performance he creates completely different characters.
@@andrewdussault2315 You didn't get the joke
He even looks like J. Jonah Jameson
I'm waiting for the internet to edit in lines from Whiplash for this show.
I feel like he was dragging
After omni man’s flashback happens he looks at what he’s done to not only earth but his son. He’s so mad at himself that he flys to the end of the universe because he’s so ashamed of himself
3:21 Legendary Moment
Amazon Prime themselves know the potential of this meme.
Always has been
2 memes. “What’s 17 more years” and “Think Mark think!”
THINK NETFLIX THINK
But its not a meme
I never saw the series and i noo saw it almost all of it foor the meme
"YOU REALLY THOUGHT YOU COULD COME BACK TO A COMIC BOOK SHOW WRITTEN BY ROBERT KIRKMAN AND NOT GET BEATEN UP TO A BLOODY PULP? THINK, STEVEN YEUN, THINK!!!!"
😂😂 underrated comment 😂😂
Weird comment but he only says think once not twice🤣
At least its not a fuckin bat this time😂
@@theyellowflash9621 I think he says it twice in the comics, it’s not too different lol
@@theyellowflash9621 Before the episode even came they made memes about the comic panel that’s why it says think mark think because the comic came first obviously and the meme came on Reddit before the shows episode aired
LOL, I love how this comic series is being animated. I read the full invincible comics during quarantine.
"What will you have after 500 years?!?!?"
"Amber Eve"
*flies away in defeat*
Mark was able to strike a couple of punches against omni, but probably the only thing that really hurt him was that "I'd still have you, dad ".
that was a direct hit to the heart
You don't say.
Why did I cry when he said that 😢?
Moooood
A couple? He took more punches than most other heroes did
Couldn’t get over how Mark still called him dad after all that
I mean, before all of that he was still his loving father. No idea about anything he was thinking or planning. Takes a time for someone to come to terms of what people they though they knew to hit them.
@@djktsjytej after being beaten up that badly I might have some reservations to callinghim my Dad
@@eternallk1ngs_57 It depends on the person and the situation. I mean, if someone you've known all your life and loved and cared for you suddenly went awol like Omni-man, some people still cling to what they remember them as rather than just outright hating out the gate. It's sudden and unexpected and you're still processing what just happened. Like I said, you need time to process everything that just happened.
@@djktsjytej true
@@eternallk1ngs_57 plus if they cling to hope that they can change back then they would do that like here he still loved him which made him question things
“What will you still have after five-hundred years?”
Me: *The Cyberpunk 2077 Beta*
Just shows how amazing Debbie and Mark are in making Nolan have doubts, and teaching him about what it means to be human and that there is more to live than strength and conquering. This is no small feat as Nolan although he is not evil he is very loyal to Viltrum and their cause.
Evil can be justified by one's doing...so he is still evil.
The fact that Debbie almost didn’t give Nolan a second date because he had such a superiority complex in the beginning
Then I guess all of Nolan race has superiority complex
@@reubenlyimo makes complete sense tbh
@@reubenlyimo because they are superior? Its not a complex if its objectively true lol
Of course an unstoppable alien is gonna have a superiority complex
