This was a hit in the UK in 1980 and I think in Europe. I adore this song and is in my top favourite 5 Christmas songs. I’ve always loved her music because she’s an original. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea but her voice and that whole Lionheart period feel does it for me. Maybe not so outside the UK. I was 20 the year this came out, I was young, in love and Christmas was coming. It’s a wonderful memory especially given how the world has now become everything from then feels like a lost Eden

Often nowadays Kate is seen as a cult artist rather than mainstream, but the fact she had a Xmas special on the BBC shows how big she was. She decided, on her own terms, to take a step back from that level of fame. Another great song 🙂

The word "placement" is definitely where you have the problem. If you go back again with have the lyrics in front of you, you'll see how she does it and how she gets that unique sound. It's very clever, because nobody else did it or could ever get away with it.

Hi and thanks for a really enjoyable reaction video. I'm glad you enjoyed this song. While I don't think it is anywhere close to being one of Kate Bush's great songs I do like it very much. It is quite typical of her 'early voice' (although I do think that sometimes we over stress the way her voice changes - there are early songs where she uses her lower range quite a lot and it sounds quite a lot like her later voice) and her early songs - and it was her 'early voice' and songs that I first heard and fell in love with and became a fan right from the very beginning.
But there is not doubt that the way she often articulates her lyrics are deliberately intended to add to the sense of the song demanding your attention. But when you have a voice that do whatever it wants and you have such utter control over it then why not. In one interview the interviewer told her that they found her music 'interesting.' She replied by saying that she would rather have her music described as interesting than 'turd-like.' But in this particular song, the way that she sings it, despite the space between notes and the way she lowers her voice on the word 'fall' you hear her sing:
    "see how I fall
    see how I fall
    like the snow"
35 years after this song was first released Kate brought out her most recent album '50 Word For Snow.' And although it contains her very ear pleasing duet with Elton John that I know you have already reacted to and liked, '50 Words..' is not an easy listening album - it is very challenging (although I like enormously). It contains some of her her longest songs one of which is almost 14 minutes long and recounts her doing very bad things (or maybe I should say very wonderful things) to a snowman who melts in her hands on her bed. But the album opens with a song called 'Snowflake' which itself is almost 10 minutes long. 'Snowflake' tells the story of the life of a snowflake as it falls to earth from the sky - just as Kate sings here in 'December Will be Magic Again' about 'see how I fall... like the snow.' I have always found it interesting that separated by 35 years she delves into this idea singing about how snow falls to the ground from out of the sky.
I think it is very possible that you might not fall in love with 'Snowflake,' but it is a very 'interesting' song. In it she sings a duet with her son, Bertie who sings the character of the snowflake falling from the sky while she sings as the mother on earth waiting to catch him and reassuring him that no matter how far he has to fall and no matter how dark the world might be, she will always catch him. And I do think that at very least you will find it intriguing. The song never moves and it is essentially just a piano and drums. Kate never really moves her voice away from her lowest register. Everything just seems to sit completely still for almost 10 minutes with huge spaces between notes.
The entire album is set around the theme of songs for the dead of winter, set right at the end of the tree line with the dark great forest behind you, the tundra in front of you and and a snowy wasteland all around you. And so you hunker down in the darkness waiting for the sun to return. '50 Words...' is not an album filled with fireworks and short radio friendly commercial songs. Rather it is stark, bare, almost foreboding and yet it still has a dark beauty to it - even though it moves as slowly as a glacier. It forces you to stop and see that even when the sun is gone from view for weeks on end, there is still beauty in the gloom of the far north and all of the beating heart and heartbreak that is cloaked by that long winter.
Thanks again. I really enjoyed this - as I always do with your reaction videos.

Nice reaction. Yes, “Kate Bush” and “does what people expect” do not go together in the same sentence. I also find it hard to follow a lot of the lyrics when she sings in a high register, but I would say the same about other female singers when they sing that high. It is also the case that microphone and recording technology was not as good back in 1978/79 compared to what it is now, and Kate was taking demands on that technology into new areas.

I enjoyed your reaction. I must say, I find this to be a curate's egg - good in parts. However, it's interesting to hear how firmly this is anchored in the piano. Kate was later to be a pioneer of synthesizers and her music benefitted hugely as a result, IMHO. You only have to hear her Hounds Of Love album to realise how technology freed her creativity. Incidentally, I had a lot of difficulty making out the high vocals too.

I think you also have to remember Kate’s lyrics are never straight forward. She’s an intelligent writer and her illusions are deep. For me the song is how the snow covers the dirt of life and how it makes it beautiful plus with her high notes she makes my spine tingle she did in 1980 and still does. I’m biased but I adore the lady she’s a one of.

I am a huge fan of hers, but I can understand why some people only partially like her music, and others don't get her at all .. I'm happy to hear that the kangaroo is safe and sound. 🦘
I have owned Kate's first three albums since their initial releases, including the live EP 'On Stage'.
Her 70's sound always takes me back to that time. I know people have their own relationship with music, but I just can't imagine my kids having the same experience with their whatever music that Hayley and I had with the music we grew up on . We used to lay on our beds and let Kate's voice and stories take us to another place. Her music was whimsical and melancholy, and her album artwork was something you could spend time gazing at. In spite of her being highly exposed in Australia (she was always on Countdown), she still felt personal and unknown to the rest of the world. Still love her work to this day, and I'm pleased to see my daughter (a big Stranger Things fan) enjoys her work too.

Speaking of marsupials. An English zoo was closing down in the 70s, and nobody would take their wallabies, so it was decided that they would release them onto either Dartmoor or Exmoor ( I can't remember which ) and let them take their chances. I'm happy to report that they have thrived throughout the years, and they're still there now.

I was 8 when it came out (and a regular Top Of The Pops viewer) but have no memory of it.
It’s never become part of the UK Xmas “hit list” that you can’t avoid in shops or on the radio (like Wham, Slade, The Pogues etc.) and I only heard it for the first time about 15 years ago.

    Hey guys,
Denny Laine of Wings has passed away. I have mentioned being a big fan of Paul McCartney and Wings, and one of my favourite songs by them was 'Mull Of Kintyre'. Please do a reaction of the *music video* of Mull Of Kintyre. The song was # 1 in Australia and several other countries, and it was a song I'd play repeatedly on my little 45 player. The song also played on radio constantly, and I never grew sick of it. I don't think 'Mull Of Kintyre' ever got as big in your part of the world. I had been wanting to request 'Mull Of Kintyre' for a long time, but I don't think I ever got round to requesting the song. It means a lot to me.

Oh for goodness sake Haniers ! This has been a terrible week for world renowned musicians and arguably the biggest loss of all I’ve just heard about , Denny Laine best known for being the guitarist and part writer of some huge songs with Paul McCartney and Wings AND the Moody Blues AND on his own , died today aged 79 .
I’m genuinely sad about this as I absolutely respected him . He wrote “ Go now “ which was a monster hit as well as Co-writing Mull of Kintyre with Paul McCartney . Really sad tbh
Anyway , I’m hoping you can fit in a fitting tribute to him if you possibly can ? Can I ask for the live version of Bluebird from “ Rockshow” from Wings ,which features all of them lined up with guitars and beautiful blended harmonies ?
Failing that , his own version of his own classic but overlooked “ Go now “…..
if that’s not possible I’ll understand , if it is I’ll be eternally grateful as Wings were extremely important to me . 🙏

Even as a fan, some of her vocals can be a little annoying 😂

Dont bring your happy holidays nonsense in here sir ..
It’s Happy Hanukkah , which finishes in the 15th this year or more reasonably Merry Xmas !!! 👀
Happy holidays really gets up my kilt , it’s not needed nor required - sorry for rant , that’s a real hot button for me .
I’m ALL for inclusivity but not when it means Merry Xmas gets banned ..😠

This was a great Single but I don't think it was on any of the LPs.

Parts of it reminded me of 'Strange Phenomena' from her debut album 'The Kick Inside' 🙂

@@SPKdesign1- I still have not yet heard anything she did after 'The Red Shoes' (which had rather underwhelmed me), except for the single 'King Of The Mountain'!
Otherwise, each of her first 6 albums speak to me, depending on my mood 😊

If only there was some way to learn what the lyrics are, some resource accessible to people.
