You are 100% correct to say that not everyone will like Kate Bush the way you have come to like her and her music. Kate's music does divide people, and always has: between those who like her music... and those who have no soul.
I think holding Kate up with Bowie is totally valid. 100%.
Kate Bush has certainly been put in the same bracket as David Bowie and I don't disagree with that conclusion. Kate is a musical icon, a pioneer and a genius
kate is on the only songwriter in our time on the level of beethoven when it comes to lyrical songwriting, i think bowie himself would admit that she was always ahead of him but its not a competition
Two of my absolute favourites for sure. Both geniuses
definitely, one of my favourite female artists.
It’s about an unborn baby of a mother living through the Cold War - fear of nuclear war. Amazing song
Stan, you will love "Moments of Pleasure," trust me 😊
Her best song, in my opinion.
She's a goddess completely original and never bettered love her
She is fearless and original. I’ve been in love with her work since I was a teen. Backing vocals on this one are by Roy Harper.
Kathryn Fehon Kate returned the compliment on Roy and Dave Gilmour's "You".
Army Dreamers is another Kate Bush masterpiece.
Kate and Bowie both studied with Lindsey Kemp, a British theatrical pioneer. Bowie's 'Ziggy' character and the androgynous 'Scary Monsters' look, was very much a Lindsey Kemp aesthetic. With Kate, we see a similar dark melodrama with Babooska, The Wedding List, Hammer Horror, Sat in Your Lap, and The Dreaming. Blood-soaked Wedding gowns, torn fish-net stockings, cigarette holders and blood red finger nails were a common sight in Lindsey's work. Kate stands alone as the only female artist to delve deeply into progressive rock influences and take a theatrical approach. When we name those other legends, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, King Crimson, Frank Zappa...where are all the women??? Ohhh...there IS ONE. And still to this day.. only ONE.
Well said. Madonna laughably claims similar originality and pioneering back catalogue for herself in the annals of female artistry - as the rest of us lean over our sick buckets, vomiting furiously having been forced to recollect her latest 'masterpiece' being mimed by Madonna herself, a wizened pensioner, feebly trying to twerk whilst silently praying her colostomy bag does not fall out and explode on the studio floor - a common peril faced by those with elderly buttcheeks, no longer capable of clenching sufficiently.
For me Kate Bush is escapism.....music to get lost in. ❤️
Some great comments already, which I totally agree with. It’s ok not to get the message/meaning behind a Kate Bush song on first listen; her songwriting has far more depth than what you get from most songwriters. But if you don’t get it, do listen again and read the lyrics, and look it up on the excellent online Kate Bush Encyclopaedia to discover how good it is. The comparison with David Bowie is valid, as it would be comparing her to her friend and collaborator Peter Gabriel. It’s difficult to pin any of these three to a recognised genre. It has been said that they are each their own genre. Kate is not just a singer/songwriter, she is so much more than that.
Kate writes about topics and takes on personas that wouldn’t even occur to other artists. This song is about nuclear holocaust from the perspective of a fetus. I mean, who does that???!! This is the stuff of genius.
David Bowie and Kate Bush; great comparison. Both uniquely talented artists. Man, you have to react to her video Experiment IV if you haven't already done so.
To put this video into context during this period, it was an especially cold part of the Cold War particularly for people across Europe the deployment of Russian SS20s had been countered by the deployment of fixed Pershing 2 missiles and mobile nuclear cruise missiles at various NATO and American airforce bases across Europe.
People had serious concerns that WW III could break out at any moment, so quite a few anti-war songs were released during this period.
But, Kate's approach to this subject, is totally and utterly unique, a self aware foetus, which is aware of the environment outside (I'm assuming the aftermath of a nuclear exchange) and afraid to be born because their chances of survival are very limited indeed.
No one but Kate Bush could come up with such an idea, Kate is absolutely fearless when it comes to her and getting her message across, which I love her for...
Her song was one of the first to kickstart the anti- war songs of those early to mid 80s years.
Peter Gabriel’s Games without Frontiers was around the same time.
@@MrMarcy76 you do know just who was providing the backing vocals on that hit single? 😁
@@leslieturner8276 yeah, it was good old Kate Bush :)
@@leslieturner8276 i think Peter Gabriel had some hand in Babooska if I'm not mistaken.
1980, was a very scary time.
I love the bass near the end of the song. It is so haunting!
There's a great interview where Neil Gaiman literally geeks out over this song
So enjoying your immersion into the amazing world of Kate Bush. With this song you are beginning to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. I suggest you try Cloudbusting or Sensual World next. There is so much to enjoy in her catalogue, you will always be amazed by her voice and originality in every song. Take your time,I would suggest the Dreaming is her best album, but you need to be ready for it.
One of my favorite songs (Yes, there are many) by Kate Bush. This song in particular shows Kate's brilliant writing style. To write a song through the eyes of a unborn infant being forced to deal with everything that it's mother is experiencing, such as smoking and, in the case of this song, the apocolypse by nuclear war, is absolutely amazing!
This came out shortly after the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union. Most people were worried about nuclear war during 1980.
For something a bit different from Kate (a bit different… did I really need to say that) do try ‘Cloudbusting’, and see if you can recognise the movie star co-starring with her in the music video. This one for me ties with ‘Running Up That Hill’ as the best track from the Hounds Of Love album.
Ha! so you did react to Breathing.... wonderful.❤
Speaking if David Bowie, they both had the same mime teacher
Welcome to the KT club!!!
God Candy The KT Fellowship.

Welcome to the KT fan ckub.. she really is original.
I would recommend you do watch the video for "The Kick Inside". If you weren't in love with her yet, you will be after that.
This is the one that you were thinking about, from the Dutch TopPop pop music programme?

Loving your reactions and agree with the Bowie parallel! Check out The Sensual World or Cloudbusting next maybe :)
Try Violin for another tour de force.
Have you done Hounds of Love yet? One of my all time favorites.
My ex boyfriend met her. He said she was soooo nice!
