UPDATE as of August 2024: Multiple Japanese historians such as Oka Mihoko, Yu Hirayama, and Goza Yuichi have come out with their own thoughts/opinions on the Yasuke debate. They each think that based on the sources we have, Yasuke seems to fit the description of what we would consider a samurai during the 1500s. Most Japanese people probably don't know about Yasuke. Japanese history is quite long and full of important people. Nobunaga is one of those important people, and there are only a few descriptions of Yasuke, merely as one episode related to his character. And there is no description of the samurai. I know that he came to Japan as a slave with the Jesuits, and caught the eye of Nobunaga, who liked new things, and was acquired by him. Someone added a story based on wishful thinking, saying that there were black samurai in Japan. If that were historical fact, history around the world could be easily rewritten.
I think an HBO series would be better. That way to have long episodes that could be like movies in themselves to chronicle all of Yasuke’s life. I would definitely cast American actor Mike Colter as Yasuke cause he I feel most resembles descriptions of Yasuke.
He also shows up in a few missions in Nioh 2 as well in service to Nobunaga, since some of the events of both games seem to cross over. That's actually what interested me enough to watch this video myself. :)

I'm a Japanese Kendoka, but if Yasuke was a samurai, why wasn't he given a surname? In feudal Japan, surnames were samurai privilege and a sign of samurai status, so why doesn't he have a surname? This is strange because in Japanese history there have never been a samurai without a surname. Even foreign-born samurai were all given surnames.

Some try to say his surname was Yan Yosuten, but this is false because not a single Japanese source corroborated this claim.

Nobungaga was a brutal vicious leader and that's why he was betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobungaga did come close to unifying Japan and ending the civil war before Toyotomi Hideyoshi did. Japanese history is amazing and I'm glad to hear about Yasuke's small short lived but interesting role in it.

How so? Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea nearly succeeded. Tokugawa shogunate reigned for 300 years. The Oda clan couldn't even last beyond Nobunaga's death.

The Imjin war was an extremely astute political maneuver to direct the energies of ambitious daimyos towards an external enemy. Tokugawa reorganised the sociopolitical mileu from warfare state to a peaceful state, after losing the Imjin war. Japan wasn't a shithole just because it refused foreign baubles and subversive ideas to run rampant within its borders. Did foreign trade and ideas bring anything positive for the Qing court? It's unfortunate that so many people have been suckered by Lockley. When you read his book he doesn't offer any sources for all the detail he gives. This is a work of historical fiction. Yasuke only has but a few sparse original sources. Lockley filled in all the gaps with his own imagination. I'm not sure why the scholarly community isn't calling him out on this. I urge everyone who's read the book to try substantiating the bulk of his tale with original sources. I couldn't find a single original source for the majority of his book.

Yasuke was the slave of Portuguese. His master handed over him to Nobunaga. In the first place, there is no evidece that he had province. Samurai was not only the role of soldier but ruler of their province. Don't tell lies. Don' make drama by your wish. We Japanese will never forgive such rubbish.
Yasuke was in Malabar India where a lot of Israelites were at. The Portagues invaded that land in 1498 and capture only black men of that land to convert them. So Yasuke was an Israelite that went to Japan.
This book is amazing. I've only recently received it as a gift and I've hardly put it down. The detail on the story combined with historical fact make it such an addictive read.

Yasuke was only ever a small footnote in Japanese history. You make him out to be this almost mythical man! When all indications are that he was only a retainer, who was given the name Yasuke by Nobunaga, received a stipend (mostly consisting of rice, which was the norm), and a short sword (not a samurai sword). He was part of the Honnō-ji incident, but only have a report of Yasuke from Luis Frois written 5 months after the incident. There he was given back to the Jesuit’s in India, where he disappeared from history.
One thing interesting, he was given only a short sword wouldn't that be what would exclude him from being a samurai? Everything I've seen about it has shown that being a samurai allowed you to wear Daisho why would Nobunaga not have given him both? Eitherway he's a really interesting figure.

It's kind of funny that you mention scrubbing. My dad was a merchant marine and told me that somewhere in the Middle East (I forget where) came across a man who had never seen a Black person. In his words the man, "tried to scrub the black off me." The novelty of him was quite a hit with the ladies apparently.
I'd read previously that Yasuke studied in Portugal. He went to Kyoto as the paige of a Jesuit priest. He was also a missionary. Nobunaga summoned him because the priest had been killed in an accident.

Yasuke held his own against an army of Samurais "for a long time" (direct quote) until he was REQUESTED to surrender after he realized he was fighting for his lords son Nobutada (son of Nobunaga) who was already dead and his army already defeated so Yasuke had no more reason to keep fighting for leaders who were already dead.

There are only two contemporary sources on Yasuke . They are the Chronicle Of Lord Nobunaga by a former retainer than a monk Ota Gyuichi and the letters of the Jesuit priest Luis Frois . Yasuke only gets a couple of mentions . Nowhere is it stated the Yasuke held a Samurai rank let alone in battle . Its a fact he only spent a few months with Nobunaga . Yasuke only gets a few lines under both authors . Most of what you have stated is conjecture and based on your own assumptions .

Yasuke is the perfect role for samurai... at early age he was sold to become a slave warrior... so he doesnt have strong connection memory with family or homeland.... He can only feel peace/success/rewarded by being the best bodyguard...

He was definitely real. The only thing up for debate was if he was actually a samurai or not. There's been a lot written of Yasuke over the years, but nothing written about him during his time mentions he was a samurai. He was likely just a sword bearer (samurai caddy) or a bodyguard, though the possibility of him being given the title of samurai is plausible. It's just odd that no one from that era mentioned it happening, especially since it was mentioned when Adams was named a samurai.
It sounds to me, that the only reason why this guy is popular right now is... Solely because of his skin colour. While having had an interesting life. It is ultimately on par, if not sub-par with many other historical and less popular figures. It feels a lot like the whole self-insert culture like "The Last Samurai", in which it is just a white american who becomes a samurai. Now it just moves on to the next group, where you find the holy grail of "Oh my god! We found a (potential) samurai of african heritage! If he was from a tribe that only kept historical records in the form of oral legends rather than written texts, the only hope of finding any information on him would be in the records the Europeans kept on him, assuming they had any. There isn't any evidence that he even was a samurai. Probably wasn't because it was never mentioned he was a samurai or was granted as a samurai. Also he didn't have or atleast it isn't mentioned anywhere that he had a surname (every samurai was granted a surname and needs to have one) AND he didn't commit seppuku when Nobunaga died, like all the other Nobunaga's samurai who did. Doesn't make him and his story any less awesome though.
He wasn’t a Samurai…. He was Bushi… still really cool. And he received a lot of the same benefits of Samurai. But he was never elevated to status of Samurai. Samurai were part of a caste system. It was not unheard of for foreigners to be elevated to Samurai. But it was very rare and would have been thoroughly recorded. Also all Samurai had Surnames. And Yasuke was never given a Surname. Nor was he granted any fiefdoms. And when Nobunaga was forced to commit Seppuku, all of his Samurai were also forced to commit Seppuku. However, Yasuke was not included. There is a preponderance of evidence that Yasuke was not Samurai. He was Bushi. You should check out Metatron’s video on Yasuke. He does a great job explaining the misconception.
Whether Yasuke is a samurai or not is really up to individual interpretation, since there is no real definition of what is a samurai in those times, when anyone could grab a sword to join a warlord's army and move up the ranks. Given the very few records of Yasuke in history, much of what was said about Yasuke is basically speculation. The problem is when speculation is presented (unintentionally or otherwise) in a way that it can be misunderstood as historical fact. I think it would be wise to clearly state in the video what are the recorded facts, and what are the "this is what we think actually happened, based on the facts." Yasuke is signficant as being the first African recorded in Japanese historical records, as being the first non-Japanese serving under a renown Japanese warlord. However, it would be stretching things a bit to call Yasuke "legendary" unless we are using the meaning of "legendary" as in "Authurian legends." I also don't know if the author of the book is an authority on history, since I cannot find out much about his educational background other than that he probably did a postgraduate course at Kanda University of International Studies, which means he likely has a postgrad degree in English teaching from there. This means he might not have actually been doing History at the masters or PhD level.
Interesting that you say that. There is a painting from 1600s that depicts a black man wrestling a Japanese man in the presence of a Noble samurai. Nobody knows who painted it or what it is supposed to depict but some believe that it is Yasuke sumo wrestling to entertain Nobunaga who is presumably the noble samurai watching on

UPDATE as of August 2024: Multiple Japanese historians such as Oka Mihoko, Yu Hirayama, and Goza Yuichi have come out with their own thoughts/opinions on the Yasuke debate. They each think that based on the sources we have, Yasuke seems to fit the description of what we would consider a samurai during the 1500s.

The video, as with Lockley's book, both use a fair amount of historical speculation based on what we know about Yasuke and the history surrounding him. The truth is that we do know very little about Yasuke, so it is quite easy to see why speculation has come into play, this is not abnormal for historical discussion. This also does not change the fact that the actual historical records that mention Yasuke detail how he WAS someone we can consider to have been very closely associated to Japan's warrior class for the brief time he was under Oda Nobunaga. Most Japanese people probably don't know about Yasuke.
Japanese history is quite long and full of important people. Nobunaga is one of those important people, and there are only a few descriptions of Yasuke, merely as one episode related to his character. And there is no description of the samurai.
I know that he came to Japan as a slave with the Jesuits, and caught the eye of Nobunaga, who liked new things, and was acquired by him.
Someone added a story based on wishful thinking, saying that there were black samurai in Japan. If that were historical fact, history around the world could be easily rewritten.
Chadwick Boseman was working on a project to make a film about Yasuke. Sadly, his death likely has brought a complete stop to that.

Some try to say his surname was Yan Yosuten, but this is false because not a single Japanese source corroborated this claim.
There's another argument against considering him a samurai. After nobunaga's death akechi had him returned to Jesuit custody. It doesn't sounds like he had a recognised status

How so? Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea nearly succeeded. Tokugawa shogunate reigned for 300 years. The Oda clan couldn't even last beyond Nobunaga's death.

The Imjin war was an extremely astute political maneuver to direct the energies of ambitious daimyos towards an external enemy. Japan wasn't a shithole just because it refused foreign baubles and subversive ideas to run rampant within its borders. Did foreign trade and ideas bring anything positive for the Qing court? It's unfortunate that so many people have been suckered by Lockley. When you read his book he doesn't offer any sources for all the detail he gives. This is a work of historical fiction. Yasuke only has but a few sparse original sources. Lockley filled in all the gaps with his own imagination. I'm not sure why the scholarly community isn't calling him out on this. I urge everyone who's read the book to try substantiating the bulk of his tale with original sources. I couldn't find a single original source for the majority of his book.

Yasuke was in Malabar India where a lot of Israelites were at. The Portagues invaded that land in 1498 and capture only black men of that land to convert them. So Yasuke was an Israelite that went to Japan.
This book is amazing. I've only recently received it as a gift and I've hardly put it down. The detail on the story combined with historical fact make it such an addictive read.

Yasuke was only ever a small footnote in Japanese history.
You make him out to be this almost mythical man! When all indications are that he was only a retainer, who was given the name Yasuke by Nobunaga, received a stipend (mostly consisting of rice, which was the norm), and a short sword (not a samurai sword).
He was part of the Honnō-ji incident, but only have a report of Yasuke from Luis Frois written 5 months after the incident.
There he was given back to the Jesuit’s in India, where he disappeared from history.
One thing interesting, he was given only a short sword wouldn't that be what would exclude him from being a samurai? Everything I've seen about it has shown that being a samurai allowed you to wear Daisho why would Nobunaga not have given him both? Eitherway he's a really interesting figure.

It's kind of funny that you mention scrubbing. My dad was a merchant marine and told me that somewhere in the Middle East (I forget where) came across a man who had never seen a Black person. I'd read previously that Yasuke studied in Portugal. He went to Kyoto as the paige of a Jesuit priest. He was also a missionary. Nobunaga summoned him because the priest had been killed in an accident.

Yasuke held his own against an army of Samurais "for a long time" (direct quote) until he was REQUESTED to surrender after he realized he was fighting for his lords son Nobutada (son of Nobunaga) who was already dead and his army already defeated so Yasuke had no more reason to keep fighting for leaders who were already dead.

There are only two contemporary sources on Yasuke . They are the Chronicle Of Lord Nobunaga by a former retainer than a monk Ota Gyuichi and the letters of the Jesuit priest Luis Frois .
Yasuke only gets a couple of mentions . Nowhere is it stated the Yasuke held a Samurai rank let alone in battle . Its a fact he only spent a few months with Nobunaga . Yasuke only gets a few lines under both authors .
Most of what you have stated is conjecture and based on your own assumptions .

This goes into great detail about his life and gives clarity to the subject. He wasn't Samurai as they would have historical records on such a famous person in Japan. Why its important is even Ubisoft now is trying to say he is part of the LBGT. If you give them an inch they take a mile.

This is great for "doubting Thomases ", who thought that yasuke is just a fable,----- pure history lesson.
He was definitely real. The only thing up for debate was if he was actually a samurai or not. There's been a lot written of Yasuke over the years, but nothing written about him during his time mentions he was a samurai. He was likely just a sword bearer (samurai caddy) or a bodyguard, though the possibility of him being given the title of samurai is plausible. It's just odd that no one from that era mentioned it happening, especially since it was mentioned when Adams was named a samurai.

It feels a lot like the whole self-insert culture like "The Last Samurai", in which it is just a white american who becomes a samurai. Now it just moves on to the next group, where you find the holy grail of "Oh my god! We found a (potential) samurai of african heritage! Time to sell this story based on a figure who is relatable to an american audience!".

they all knew he was gonna be in the game even way before the trailer dropped. I guess maybe they thought since its a black male character he'll just be some side character or comic relief, something they can be comfortable with. But now that the trailer shows that he's gonna be one of the main characters, they're flipping out.

I am huge fan of history, have seen the docus back yonder, and am stoked about Yasuke in the new AC title.

If he was from a tribe that only kept historical records in the form of oral legends rather than written texts, the only hope of finding any information on him would be in the records the Europeans kept on him, assuming they had any. Furthermore, if there were records on him, it would be difficult to find out about it since they likely would've been using a different name for him.

The problem African Samurai The True Story of Yasuke, is that it don't read like a narrative novel by coincidence. It is a narrative novel based on historic periods and events but highly embelished.
LOL If you're going to come and say this nonsense of" highly embelished" because of what happened in Assassin's Creed, than you're 100% WRONG here entirely.
While the Assassin's Creed series is PURPOSEFULLY playing around with real history and is historical science fiction and this game series has NEVER stated or claimed that ANY of these events are true at all as it has a fictional story within the backdrop of history, nothing you're saying here makes any sense at all.
However Yasuke DID exist and he WAS considered a Samurai. He was given the title of samurai by Nobunaga. He also fought in several battles despite only spending 15 months in Japan prior to Nobunaga’s death. Following the defeat of Nobugana’s army, little is known of the fate that befell Yasuke. He was a retainer, yes, but he was considered as a samurai. That's what Japanese retainers ARE, samurai.
But regardless of that, It doesn't matter if he wasn't a "True samurai" the point is that he's more than likely to BE one and fictionalized takes in fiction are able showcase him AS one as you've had a real life children's book that came out in the 1950s about Yasuke FROM a japanese person that depicts Yasuke as a Samurai, JUST like this game and other fictionalized versions of his story.
They are making a fictional story that is exaggerated versions of real life people and event which the series has ALWAYS gone for.

The real life Hassassins are NOTHING like they are as the Assassins's Creed version depicts them as, the real life templars are NOTHING like versions of the Templars that you see in the game. African Samurai is based off of TRUTH here of what Yasuke actually HAS been in history.

There isn't any evidence that he even was a samurai. Probably wasn't because it was never mentioned he was a samurai or was granted as a samurai. Also he didn't have or atleast it isn't mentioned anywhere that he had a surname (every samurai was granted a surname and needs to have one) AND he didn't commit seppuku when Nobunaga died, like all the other Nobunaga's samurai who did. Doesn't make him and his story any less awesome though.

He wasn’t a Samurai…. He was Bushi… still really cool. And he received a lot of the same benefits of Samurai. But he was never elevated to status of Samurai. Samurai were part of a caste system. It was not unheard of for foreigners to be elevated to Samurai. But it was very rare and would have been thoroughly recorded. Also all Samurai had Surnames. And Yasuke was never given a Surname. Nor was he granted any fiefdoms. And when Nobunaga was forced to commit Seppuku, all of his Samurai were also forced to commit Seppuku. However, Yasuke was not included. There is a preponderance of evidence that Yasuke was not Samurai. He was Bushi.
You should check out Metatron’s video on Yasuke. He does a great job explaining the misconception.
Whether Yasuke is a samurai or not is really up to individual interpretation, since there is no real definition of what is a samurai in those times, when anyone could grab a sword to join a warlord's army and move up the ranks. Given the very few records of Yasuke in history, much of what was said about Yasuke is basically speculation. The problem is when speculation is presented (unintentionally or otherwise) in a way that it can be misunderstood as historical fact. I think it would be wise to clearly state in the video what are the recorded facts, and what are the "this is what we think actually happened, based on the facts." Yasuke is signficant as being the first African recorded in Japanese historical records, as being the first non-Japanese serving under a renown Japanese warlord. However, it would be stretching things a bit to call Yasuke "legendary" unless we are using the meaning of "legendary" as in "Authurian legends."
I also don't know if the author of the book is an authority on history, since I cannot find out much about his educational background other than that he probably did a postgraduate course at Kanda University of International Studies, which means he likely has a postgrad degree in English teaching from there. This means he might not have actually been doing History at the masters or PhD level.
God, I really hope The Shogunate doesn't shut off comments just because some people decided to be racist after the Assassin's Creed Shadows reveal

Nobody knows who painted it or what it is supposed to depict but some believe that it is Yasuke sumo wrestling to entertain Nobunaga who is presumably the noble samurai watching on
