    Hi!
    I have a service dog too and recently had my most RUDE interaction ever. I was walking past this woman and she yells out "is that a service dog?", I keep walking and say yes. She yells out "for what?". And I said mobility. And she literally said "well, you look mobile".
    And so thinking she needs some education about invisible disabilities I walk back, and say excuse me. And she says "You're walking aren't you. You look mobile to me". She says this very condescendingly. I asked if she knows what invisible disabilities are. And so she then asks well whats wrong with you. Do to her hostility I told her that is personal since I didn't want her to ridicule my disabilities. And so I walk away at this point. And she keeps yelling out that "I dont need that dog, see she's walking just fine, etc."
    I was just speechless! My service dog is dually trained for many things. She has a mobility harness for forward momentum and counterbalance as I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromylagia and Idiopathic Vertigo. She is also trained for my PTSD - major thing being interrupting flashbacks.
    Thanks for reading Mary & Peter :)
    I had a major loss last year and discovered your channel about a month ago and your videos have really helped.

      Oh it was some random woman standing outside my dormitory at my college. I was walking outside. She only knew she was a service dog based on her mobility harness.
      But yeah luckily my state considers denying a service dog a criminal offense and can call police. I only had to do that once.

      Brittney Ortiz I'm sorry that happened to you. My mother has an invisible disability and if she had a SD and someone talked to her like that, I would be just livid! It's sad that people can be so insensitive. 😔

      Brittney Ortiz oh my!!! people can be awful!! I have those same illnesses so I totally understand! my husband has POTS n NCS nboth of us would def benefit from a service dog but cannot afford one at this time but certainly I can see how it would help and I dread all those people when we do get one. :( though I use a cane for now and am 30 n look a bit younger being very short ect and people look at me all the time giving me dirty looks or shaking their heads, esp when I use the in store scooters when needed. it's not right :( I'm sorry that happened but good for you for trying to educate her even though she was so awful!! I hope you have better days out and you have some good days w your health!! 💜

    perfect timing that the video is about service dogs.. i was at the hospital in boston today and a patient came in with a black standard poodle SD and i immediately thought of Ollie. i remembered what Mary said so i just smiled and she ended up sitting next to me and said hello. i was not even planning on asking to pet him because he was working but it was the dog who asked for permission to come to me. she asked if he can come say hello so it was super cute and i enjoyed some doggie time while we waited in the waiting room. he was so cute. i mentioned how i know not to distract working dogs and she explained that when shes sitting its ok, she needs his assistance and focus when shes standing and walking. anyway, there is my SD interraction story of the day.

    My two little ones, 4 year old and 2 year old. I am teaching them if we see any dog in the store, not to touch the dog. The dog is working. My 4 year old is slowly catching on she is still confused of the working part. In our area we seem to have alot of interaction with them. I appreciate your way of approaching the curious minds.

    • @TysMommy609
      @TysMommy609 7 лет назад +7

      I've got three littles (4, 6 and 7) and I've taught them that they simply need to ask before touching ANY dog that isn't ours. We go to a dog friendly farmer's market and all the dog parents really appreciate that they ask first. Of course sometimes those parents don't hear so it's also a great opportunity for them to understand that just because they ask nicely, doesn't mean they can always pet the dog. And whenever we meet a service dog with a vest then we can talk about what that dog is doing (service vs guiding eyes (we just met one yesterday who was in training), etc.)
      Best of luck to you with your littles! I'm sure they'll get it in no time!

    I was in a Petsmart the other day with my service dog in training, she wasnt wearing her vest or anything marking her as a service dog as we were just browsing, and it was a pet friendly store. A lady with a service dog was walking up to the register and I noticed the dog had the same vest as a friend of mine's service dog. I was with my mom at the time so I told my mom "Hey that dog has the same vest as my friends service dog." And my mom was like oh yeah it does. And then a random customer glared at me and my mom as she walked by and said "The service dog is working leave it alone." What??? I absolutely was doing nothing at all to the handler or her service dog, all I did was make a comment to my mom about the vest ! Some people are so rude.

    I can tell you exactly why the co-worker made a face as if they didnt believe Ollie is an actual service dog. TOO MANY ppl are bringing their pets to stores and restaurants saying they are service dogs when they are NOT! I work at a hair salon and several times a month someone will bring a service dog that roams the room pees the floor and barks at the dryers and other clients. But we arent allowed to deny them unless they actually poop the floors. Yes it has happened! I would know that Ollie is a service dog simply because he pays attention only to you (and Peter lol) and dosnt stray

    • @heatherwoods9397
      @heatherwoods9397 7 лет назад +14

      Judith Brummett Hey Judith! I'm a service dog handler myself and have some information I hope you'll find useful! Unfortunately, fakes are becoming such an issue because businesses don't really know the laws. If a dog is being disruptive at all ( aka barking or peeing as you said ), you are legally allowed to ask them to remove the dog - not just if they poop. You can't, however, kick the person out. They must still be allowed to come back without the dog.
      Also! It is illegal for a dog to be wondering at all as they wouldn't be considered under control of the handler. They must also have a leash on unless actively performing a task.
      One last thing! There is no certification or paperwork for a service dog. If someone has some, it is likely a fake.

    • @JudithBrummett
      @JudithBrummett 7 лет назад +1

      Our company policy is to not say anything other than ask them to clean up or control their dog. I have actually looked up the laws and copied them but the mgmnt dosnt want to look.

    • @clairem7818
      @clairem7818 7 лет назад +5

      I hate that this is becoming such an issue. I have a Service Dog in Training and I always ask before I bring her into any store or business, because she is only in training and doesn't have the same rights as SDs. It makes me so mad that people are taking their pets in place and saying that they're SDs. When they start acting up it gives real SDs a bad image and makes it harder on us people who have real SDs.

    • @laurac5451
      @laurac5451 7 лет назад +1

    Ok..If you follow Peter and Mary ( and Ollie), you should be aware by now that yes, he IS a service dog. But if you watched Christmas or anything like that, or just simple day to day, yes, he is clearly a member of the family! There is NO doubt this dog is well loved, well groomed, fed, taken to the vet, and all around enjoyed. If you need to watch a video or whatever to reassure yourself he is not "just a service dog", they have several videos on their channel. Plus, you can Google it. Don't judge someone before you know the whole story. I know Mary and Peter can defend themselves, but I've followed them for a while. They love Ollie. How about you watch the video where Ollie and her are reunited after his training is done. Then tell us about the reaction. And I think they do call him a service dog a lot just for the awareness and that's a huge part of why he's there. Please be aware of how your comments come across.

I deal with on a regular basis having my son out in public who has Aspergers and a few other issues and he from time to time has a hard time being out in public and I get stared at all the time when I'm trying to deal with his meltdowns or behaviors. If the thing is made of glass or metal, or can be put in a plastic bag and then placed directly into the washer and dryer, then it's okay. I would be really careful about wooden things though! If it's something really fancy that you can't *not* take, maybe keep it in the shed. Bedbugs die after a year of not getting "food", and they also don't like the cold.

When people like the guy in Walmart ask if he bites I say no but I do. Works like a charm. I do have this one lady I run into regularly that flips out Everytime she sees him, she's been asked to leave by two restaurant, three stores and the grocery store. The one restaurant told her never to come back. Never felt so supported by a random person before, felt great.

      Is harassment of service dog teams a crime in your state? If so, you may have some options. Actually, you may have some options under other harassment or stalking statutes, as well as hate crime. Disturbing you in 6 places takes the cake.

      Frida Writes Thank you for your concern and ideas. I don't think we have such law but will look more into it. She's annoying, she just one of those people who think what they want is the only and right way. She has an attitude problem and her mouth has gotten her in trouble in the past according to the court records ( public info). The police know her well. They have told to call anytime she acts up. I also have family in the local law enforcement. I really could careless about her mouth but worry that she will pick on someone not as thick skinned and hard head as me.

    I saw a woman with a service dog at Walmart about a month ago while sitting in Dunkin Donuts, and she heard me say to my friend "Look at the service dog, she's so sweet and so well behaved" and she turned around and said "Her name is Winter, and she taking a break right now, would you like to pet her?" Obviously I took advantage of being able to pet a pooch! I asked her how old Winter was (14 months) and how long she'd had her for(8 months), and that I think it's so awesome that people are able to have service dogs, and what a blessing they are! She proceeded to tell me that Winter helped her with her social anxiety and balance as she was in a very bad car accident many years ago. It was one of the coolest encounters with a service dog and handler that I've had so far! I never approach service dogs when I see them in public, but I sure do comment on how adorable they are!

    Whenever I see someone out and about with a service dog, I just watch them with a smile. I would love to pet the dog, because I think the relationship is beautiful, but I know it isn't proper... so I just send the dog and the handler love from my heart and a smile. Hopefully they feel it! :-)

      That's unfortunate! :(
      Where I live pretty much every place has a Mini Doner (for kids, people with small appetities, or people who don't have enough money for a regular doner) or you can buy a roll and some cheese or meat, or just get a premade thing. I have lots of food allergies and intolerances, and sometimes it is just easier to not eat at all, or go to a chain place like McDonalds even though the food isn't as good.

      Leer Wesen it sucks. I live near Seattle and in this "progressive" area I still deal with this crap. I went to a waffle house and the waiter said no but I went above her and the manager called the owner, mind you this place was packed and money was not an issue with this place, and after a half hour they finally said yes. that wasn't fun at all because I wasn't alone and my family had to wait. After all this I got dirty looks from the staff all through the meal. I do wonder if they did something to my food.

    +The Frey Life ~ Did you know that if you wash all your produce in vinegar water that all the pesticides and dirt come off easily? I soak my produce in a 1/4 to 1/2 cup vinegar (I use white or apple cider vinegar) a sink of cool water for about 10 minutes. I rinse them throughly after the soak. I then line the plastic containers the produce came in with paper towels, after blotting them dry. The fruit actually lasts longer in the refrigerator that way, especially berries. Just a helpful little hint. It doesn't take long and then you know that all the produce in the refrigerator is ready to grab and eat. I do this as soon as I come home, by the time all the groceries are put up, the produce is clean and ready to be rinsed and stored.

    I have a service dog now. But when I was a waitress at a sushi restaurant (I'm Korean) I had to explain to the owners and other staff that service dogs have to be allowed in by law and they can only ask if it is a service dog and what services do they provide, also that a service dog can only be escorted out if the dog is being vicious, or defecates indoors. So I feel bad that you have that experience every now and then. My service dog is for agoraphobia and panic disorder so having her helps keep me grounded, but also attracts attention.
    I'm glad you're able to be so patient and try your hardest to explain. Sometimes I feel like I can't do it and I feel so bad.
    You're such a beautiful family and your patience is beyond astounding. Sending lots of love.

    In my neck of the woods everyone seems to be treating all stores like Pet smart and taking in their dogs everywhere. It's become pretty easy to identify which dogs are clearly not service animals. just tonight we encountered 2 dogs in our grocery store on long leashes and clearly wanting to wander from their owners. We asked an employee about it and the store doesn't allow the employees to say anything. there is a sign posted at the front that only service dogs are allowed yet due to fear of being sued it is not enforced. I think that this behavior is part of why soo many people question whether or not dogs they see are true service dogs or not. I was wondering if Mary and Peter have encountered dogs in stores or restaurants that didn't behave like a trained service dog would and if they have had other dogs try to engage Ollie?

    I love you guys! What a crazy day. My mom has a service dog and she hasn't had too many issues, he is used to alert her to seizures and to prevent her from getting hurt in the event of one. So a lot of people kinda give her the side-eye and suggest that she doesn't need one. There are certain circumstances in which she will not bring him, and that's only if she is with someone who can recognize her seizures and knows her medical history (like me) and someone accused her of not needing him. It's ridiculous that people can be so aggressive about someone's medical or mental health when they know nothing about them. I hope you have an easier time :) love you guys and Ollie

    I am continually baffled by people who don't understand service dogs. Admittedly before finding you guys I didn't know a service dog was useful for someone with CF, but I feel like I have always known about seizure dogs, and how important it is not to distract them from their task. Whenever I see someone with a dog in a place dogs usually aren't (like stores/restaurants), I just assume it is a service dog, and figure I should just ignore them because obviously, the dog is performing some sort of function, or else they wouldn't be there.

    • @savannahm9943
      @savannahm9943 7 лет назад

      bob8mybobbob Same. From a young age, I just assumed I shouldn't interact with it if it donned special gear or the owner had a noticeable disability, and when I got older it occurred to me that I probably shouldn't interact with any dogs that happen to be in a public setting. Plus, if you want to pet someone else's dog, it's safe and courteous to ask first. Or so I thought...

    I have a friend with a service dog, so I like to think I'm a little (a lot) more aware of the rights of folks with service dogs.
    I was pretty damn stunned when an employee in a grocery store dared to ask what was wrong with a customer with a dog and ended up YELLING at them across the store, "YOU CAN'T LEGALLY ASK THEM THAT! YOU CAN ASK WHAT SERVICES THE DOG PERFORMS BUT YOU CANNOT ASK WHAT THEIR DISABILITY IS!"
    And then turned bright red with embarrassment and hid back in frozen foods. XD

    Since my boys where toddlers I have always said if the dog has a handle then it is working and you can't touch. If they ask what it's doing then I have always told them to go ask the person nicely the question. Same as if they ask why someone is in a wheelchair etc. I believe that it is rude to talk about others. If you want to know something then ask the person themselves. I have never met anyone who hasn't been willing to answer a child's question xxx

    The thing I notice about Ollie is that even for a service dog, he's so chilled! Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a good thing. It shows how well he's trained by the trainer & by you guys. I grew up around dogs & I've been aware of the whole concept of service dogs since I was very young. I even remember being confused at one stage as to why my blind Sunday school teacher & my blind Gran didn't have guide dogs when I was young. And having grown up around children with special needs & doing all my health & social care training, it's pretty much become "normal" to me for people with different needs to have service/therapy dogs if it's right for their family. I sometimes forget that other people don't understand it like I do. I do find it difficult not to pet the service dog, but if he/she is working, it's not even an option. I did get to pet a guide dog ages ago. My disability adviser at my local job centre needs her dog to get to & from work, but he gets to chill out all day while she's at work, so I got to pet him. He was a gorgeous black lab. I now have the joy of sponsoring a beautiful golden retriever as she trains to become a guide dog.

    I remember in middle school in sixth grade we did raise pennies for service dog that would go to someone in need and one of the things they stressed was that you don't touch a dog during work time. My question is if you pet the service dog does that mean it will stop doing its service and not perform the skill. I know only from what I learned about service dogs that you don't touch them when they are being trained or learning to do their job but not so much once they are out with their owners fully trained. But as someone who is a dog owner I am protective at times with not letting people touch the dog because I don't know where their hands have been especially since we keep our dog super clean. I ask owners if their dog as been given the right shots and friendly before our family dog goes near a dog or someone petting the dog. I just don't want to take that chance. I think you have the right to tell a person please don't pet it but I would be happy to have you admire my dog while I tell you more about service dog and what he does for you. Please come to my channel and give me some support by clicking the subscribe button and subscribing to my channel the frey life, it would be greatly appreciated.
