    I know everyone on here is hating on this car. But my brother in law sells Nissans and you'd be surprised how many people buy these base versas. If you're looking for something for your kid, or if you just want something cheap to get you from A to B it's perfect. These cars are Super reliable and if you're someone who's on a budget, let's face it a lot of us are, these Nissans aren't bad.

      +PuppyUnicorn Idk, maybe cause these cars don't hold up well, even in the used car market. I can either get a 2012 Versa for the same price as a much older Civic (maybe an 08 or an 09). They're both economy cars except the Civic is bigger and (imo) looks much nicer.

      +PuppyUnicorn I just bought this car to replace a 2000 Honda Accord. I feel the same way.. lol I only owned my Honda Accord 3 years and had to replace the timing belt 3 times. First time was regular maintenance, second time because some other belt went and destroyed it, third time compressor went and destroyed timing belt. $3600 in just timing belt repairs, easily another $1500 in odds and ends and paid a rip off price of $7000 for that car. I bought the Nissan extended warranty to take it to 72 months/75,000 miles bumper to bumper. I love the crank windows, because the windows no longer worked on the Honda, crank ones always work. I love the manual door locks because my previous car, a Saturn SL2 had an electrical gremlin that would make the power door locks randomly spaz out and flick on and off so fast it was like an arcade game getting the door open. The Honda defrost button wouldn't disengage, so, I only had cold air blowing up the window. The Versa I got has a manual slider for the defrost. Give me manual everything. I don't even want power steering! But, well, that came with the Versa. lol

      We like to touch base on the positive and negatives of each vehicle we review. We realize this Versa has the simple purpose in life of being affordable transportation to get you from point A to B. We did touch base on some of the positives: cheap to buy/own, spacious interior, new car warranty, peppy acceleration w/ 5-speed. However, personally we just feel you should bump your budget up by a couple grand to get expected features or just purchase a late model used vehicle.

      2theRedline That is fair enough. I do agree with you, and that is why before buying my 2014 Mazda 3, all my other cars were second hand. (I even feel I could've got a very nice used car for the price I paid for my Mazda)

      Bruno Danese To be brutally honest, this car really is the biggest piece of shit for what it is at a 12 grand price tag. That is what people get for being frugal tight wads and not purchasing a "21st century" vehicle for a couple more grand. Good Lord, save your money until you can afford a nicer car or buy a nicer used car or put the money you have already down and finance the remainder of a new nicer car if you're so impatient. It would be the logical thing to do and would be in your best interest than to purchase this poorly thought of shitty ass mobile.

    I know most people here will scoff at this car, but I thank you for at least giving time to even the cheap cars that most enthusiasts wouldn't waste time on. My 2014 Nissan Versa Note S was my first new car and though I'm sure I could have found a better deal in the used market, I thought it was a great buy knowing I wouldn't have any major issues to deal with a 5 Speed that I found was a great first manual to learn on. Yes, manual windows and locks is a bit of an issue for most, but for me coming from an old truck that had window motor problems, it was nice knowing it would never be an issue. The 1.6L motor has plenty of pep for the average driver. I had 4 people in the car a few days ago and I still didn't have an issue accelerating onto the highway. It isn't the best car you can buy, but it isn't the worse buy either. Cheap, easy to maintain, tons of room and good reliability. Not a bad first new car in my opinion.

Bought my versa new for just over 10k, I could literally drive my versa for 2.5 years, light it on fire, buy another versa and drive it for 2.5 years... push that one off a cliff.... and I still would be out the same amount of money as if I would have bought a new equinox. Your truck was 10 years old and probably didn't cost 12k. The point is why spend 12k on nothing when you can spend less on something more. Even for under a few grand you can get a safer and more featured car.

    • @hawkermustang
      @hawkermustang 10 лет назад +3

      GrandpaChink I get your point about buying a used car with more features for the same money. But that wasn't my point. This car has a ton of safety and luxury features. He is really just complaining about the diva stuff like not having power windows and a soft touch dash board. When I was a teen I would have loved to have a new car as nice as this. I would have just ripped that shitty stereo out and put in a badass after market system. Then I would take the ugly wheels off and put some nice rims on it. Then it would be all good.

      jaymum23 I agree. I also had a co-worker that had a very nice black Merc. It was about 8 years old, but he kept it looking like it was new. However, one day he showed up to work in a different car. I ask, where is your Merc? He said I sold the damn thing because whenever it breaks and I take it to the shop I get raped.
      This Versa is great for those on a really tight budget or if your looking to buy your kid a new car. Really it has everything that you actually need even though it doesn't have everything that you may want.
      In fact, my mother still drives a 2004 Honda Civic and it has crank windows. She bought it new like that. At least she wont have to worry about the power motor going out. Its not a big deal really. I like her civic. It was a base model, but it did have dealer added mag wheels and window tint. She bought the car because she liked it, and she didn't think crank windows was a big deal. She was driving 100 miles round trip to work everyday. She wanted a cheap to run dependable car that could last a long time.
      Actually, Its better to own a basic car when its gets old, because its much cheaper to keep it on the road and out of the shop. Her Civic now has 180,000 miles, and the only breakdowns it has had was two wheel bearing have went out. The first one went out under warrenty.

    • @oldtwins
      @oldtwins 10 лет назад +10

      I agree. You're getting the same engine as the 20k decked out model! Usually in cheap base cars they put a specific awful engine in there to inflict pain on the buyer. And it has A/C too - that used to be a $1k option on cheap base cars. The lack of features can be a plus, for instance you can put your own kick-ass sound system in there easily.

    • @oldtwins
      @oldtwins 9 лет назад +5

      ***** The point is that you aren't paying for junk that you're going to be removing anyway. Even 50k luxury cars have sound systems that are sub-par for audiophile tastes. So there is a perk after all: Saving money in your wallet.

    I make $85K a year and I love my 2018 Versa S Plus I’ve gotten 52 miles to the gallon at 60 mph on flat interstate roads from Lubbock TX to Lamesa TX at 65 Mph I get 50.5 mpg at 70-75 mph I get around 40-45 mpg that’s with no wind driving it like an old lady. I’ve had mine for over a year I haven’t had one issue with the car. As well mine has the non power windows non power locks the only thing that is annoying is the non power locks. The air conditioner is extremely good. It does very well in snow last winter we had 10 inches of snow for one week in Lubbock and I never got stuck. I’m 6.4 and 280 and I fit perfect in the car I commute 50 miles each ways to work so 100 miles round trip or 160 kilometers a day. Currently I’ve put 44,242 miles on it a little over a year. Around 80,000 kilometers. Only part that sucks about the car is the stereo there’s no real adjusting of the EQ so when you fully turn it up the speakers distort a little. But just buy a double din aftermarket stere and 4 aftermarket 6.5 inch speakers other then that so far it’s been an amazing little car. It navigates thru traffic well.

      I am Split. The Spark has reliability issues (but also a base model can be bout under $9900).. it would be a nicer handling car. The Smart is kind of Dumb. Reliability issues, only marginally better or same fuel economy, no back seat, cannot Park it like in Europe (sideways on the street). The Mirage is getting excellent reliability ratings from the owners and over 45 MPG reported (sometimes over 50 MPG). It is better equipped, has more warranty, and available for the same $9995. I would need to drive a Versa to know for sure, but I can say I got a 5 speed Mirage on a test drive up to 50.9 MPG. Plus it had a great turning circle. If I needed more back seat room I know the Versa would be the best Bet. I can live without PW, PL, etc.

    Just remember folks, a Yugo had an MSRP of $3990 in 1985. Adjusted for inflation, that is $8872. The Versa starts off at $11950 MSRP and if you buy through truecar.com (true car estimate) is around $10,300 in my area. So basically, adjusted for inflation with the understanding you're getting more features and creature comforts, this car is basically less expensive than a Yugo.

    I have the 2012 S 5spd. $10,990 MSRP, prior to the addition of a tach and bluetooth. For a cheap car Nissan did an excellent job. Mine has 160k and aside from regular/scheduled maintenance it has needed nothing. Like, nothing. And being a broke student I maintain it like I maintain my diet - as cheap and sparse as possible to get through each day. It just doesn't care. It doesn't give up. It just accepts that it is being driven by a 24 year old engineering student. If it needs something I take it to some old garage with a $50 shop rate. It's not even like I drive it conservatively - I drive like a complete ass. I'm utterly shocked at how well this car has held up. It probably has another 100k in it. I got a new car so I could have one less thing to worry about in college and it's done the job so, so well.

    I love this car. I love the plastic panels, because they will wipe clean easily. I love the crank windows, because ten years from now when I still own this car, they will still work. I loved the manual locks for the same reason. If you're someone who drives your car forever, then less 'bells and whistles' is actually kind of a plus. I already threw seat covers on to buy the upholstery as much time as possible. Granted, I wish I could get something like the Honda Accord, only with manual everything and plastic door panels. But, I don't see that happening anytime soon. I wish every car was offered in this 'barebones' trim. I looked at so many cars trying to find one with as many manual components as possible. Why? There's nothing sadder than a bunch of 'bells and whistles' that no longer work.

  • @jameswood678

    This review is too harsh. Expecting an Infinity? This car is an incredible value, as judged by the competition. It's better-looking, roomier, and cheaper than its closest competitors. Comparing brand new cars to used cars is comparing apples to oranges, an entirely separate discussion, and has no place in a new car review. The fact that Mitsubishi can sell 3-cylinder Mirage for more, as well as the fact that off-brand Korean cars also cost more are evidence of what a good deal this car is.

    • @jameswood678
      @jameswood678 9 лет назад

      +David C Schlesinger
      Nope, he didn't SAY he was expecting an Infinity. He just acted like it, having to repeatedly call *everything* cheap, in a cheap car. Cheap was part of the deal to begin with. Yup, as I said - comparing new and use cars IS comparing apples to oranges. Now, in that context (of comparing apples to oranges), you ask what other new cars one can find for $12K? What difference does that make, and what kind of sense does that question make? None? Some? Who cares? The question is irrelevant? Whatever. If some customers would rather buy a used car for this price, they're free to do so. Dinging the cheapest new car on the road today is completely irrelevant. Hell, Mitsubishi - somehow - manages to sell the 3-cylinder Mirage subcompact for MORE MONEY THAN THIS. Take your beef to a RUclips review of that car, where it *might* make more sense, if you ignore this car.

    I just bought the Versa S-Plus and I'm happy to save a couple thousand dollars on unnecessary frills like power door locks and power windows. I drive with the windows up most of the time anyway. Overall I'm really impressed with this car. The two tone plastic interior trim of the higher level models really looks worse than just the plain black interior. My only big complaint is the lack of a lock on the passenger side door. This is both a safety and convenience issue. If anything happens to the main lock, you wouldn't be able to get into this car and would have to break a window. Also, since there are no power windows or locks, you have to reach over to unlock the other side. Next, it makes no sense to me why Nissan bothers with two levels of AM/FM/CD radio. Bluetooth phone is standard but not bluetooth audio? How dumb is that? And who, in 2015, listens to CDs in the car? The target audience for this entry-level car is 25 years old. They don't even know what a CD is. I don't miss the adjustable headrests - who adjusts those? But I'm not convinced they save much money with seats that look like they stopped the upholstery at the liner. For my money, they could get the economies of scale up to offer a better product at a good price (and good margins) by offering 2 versions ... the SV (at the S-Plus price) and the SL without the fancy touch screen/GPS radio. Satellite radio needs to be standard on all radios: AM/FM/SAT. It's no longer a luxury item and the automakers get paid an incentive for every new sub, so why limit it to the 5% who buy the top model? That said, I thank Nissan for trying to make new cars somewhat affordable. I looked at used cars, but most had gone 3 years with no more maintenance than an oil change and were going to be a money pit for thousands of dollars in repairs.

    I have a 2013 I bought new with 80000 miles on it. I'm 52 years old and just wanted a basic car that gets good fuel economy. I have the sv version and it really is quite nice for what it is! It has power locks, windows, and mirrors, automatic, AC, cruise, and a rear spoiler that makes it look a little sporty! The only things I've had to repair are the front bushings - made a creaking noise when going over bumps( under warranty), a new muffler (rusted out, live in Wisconsin with snow and salt), and a heat shield that rattled. The car is roomy, the trunk is big along with lots of rear seat room! I find the interior is kind of cheap but it's an inexpensive car to begin with. The speakers don't sound the greatest but there's four of them! I've had no transmission issues at all with the cvt! My only complaint is that while driving down the freeway the car does tend to get blown around more than any other car I've had. I don't know if it's because of the light weight of the car, the small tires, or aerodynamics, but it is hard to stay in the middle of your lane sometimes! The engine can also be loud at times. I feel it has enough power for me. Never had a problem passing or using on ramps to get on the highway! It's not a Corvette people! Would I buy one again? At my age and income level I could afford to spend more. I may have bought a civic or corolla but that would've been a lot more money if new! It's been a good car and if I go on longer trips or need more room or want a comfier ride, I use my other automobile!

      Depending on what you value in a car. The Fiesta is going toward a more lux market and therefore costs 20% more. Those features are something that you have to consider if it is worth to you or not. Some people say yes and get the Fiesta or higher trim Versa. Some do not. Personal choice.

    My ex girlfriend's dad rented a Versa SL right after this body style came out and it was one of the WORST cars I've ever driven. When it gets to the point of driving a car that doesn't even have rear speakers or a trunk release I would just suck it up and buy a used civic or something.

    • @awksweat230

      Yes, thank you! Stick with used, reliable cars rather than spending the same amount on this "new" car. That way you get better features, and comparable reliability. In addition, you're keeping another car on the road which is better for the environment.

    • @Jakeman21642
      @Jakeman21642 10 лет назад

      Stevorn Richards Maybe if you paid attention to my comment you would realize 2012 is a completely different body style where Nissan took a below average car and made it even worse. The car overall has the build quality of a pepsi can and honestly even if it has nice features like keyless entry and iPod connections that still doesn't make it a good car at all.

    • @galist4lyfe
      @galist4lyfe 10 лет назад +1

      Jakeman21642 i did pay attention to your comment. I never sat in a 2012 versa before so I'm not doubting you. I know in nissan's SL trims those are the luxury trims that's y i asked if it's the right "trim." It's just hard to believe that nissan would have trunk realease and most premium features in a 2010 model and not a 2012. The trunk release wasn't inside the car, it's outside near the tail light. A little black button.
