This was just what the Steam Controller already had years ago, and adapted into the Steam Deck :) I own both now and use my Steam Controller as a remote controller for the Steam Deck sometimes. Loving both!
One of the coolest uses I've seen for the track pads is in point and click adventures, specifically the Monkey Island games, a community layout was made where you can turn the left track pad into a nine button radial menu for the verbs you use. These menu abilities are game changers. This is the most functional controller I've ever used and the community layouts and support behind it enhances it tenfold.
On pc, steam can also be used to utilize ds4/dualsense trackpad to be like this Theres more to it too, you can customize it from a hotwheel to a scroolwheel and etc
It works amazingly. I was playing a game not optimized for the Deck and it was as good or better than using a mouse. It’s very responsive, almost feels like a trackball.
This is ironic. The touchpads on Steam Deck that are being praised today are very similar to the touchpads that Valve featured on the Steam Controller, years ago, that too many people ripped out of ignorance. My my, how times have changed.
I love my steam controllers. Doom '16 taught me how to use the track pad, and I never wanted a right joystick again. It's funny that they are super expensive now.
I think the reason steam controllers were discontinued was because of some other 3rd party controller company (scuf something like that) sued and won the case vs valve, so they had to discontinue the contoller as well as payout for "damages". It was a completely bs case, I honestly don't even know how they won. Infringement of back paddles, apparently. Which is funny, since xbox has the very same type of controller through their own "elite" version and even Playstation had that "back paddles" accessory for their controller iirc. I really want them to come back with a steam contoller 2 with the same face button layout as the deck, track pads and all! (Without "infringing" qualities)
I’ve made setting such as button combinations like control z to go to one button on the radial menu. It’s very difficult to learn the settings but if you read valves guide on it, it gets much easier.
I just installed the gog installer and was able to get some old RTS games running like War Craft 2 and Hero's of Might and Magic. The track pads work great for these games.
You forgot to mention that those track pads are a hybrid mix of a mouse and joystick you can configure those so that you can have an endless movement like a joystick but the precision of a mouse you can add a settings to where when you move your finger towards the edge it will start to go in One direction and you can adjust the sensitivity and a settings to where if you hold it for a certain amount of time it will start to move that's where the magic happens that no other device that I can think of has sure we've had devices like this with touchpads but not like this you can so desire to remove the trackball mode if you wanted
Track pads is just touching the surface what one can do with them. Here one option, like shoot games you can use the right track pad for looking around, but act like the abxy buttons too.
This is why the steam controller is goated in my opinion. Nobody else seemed to like the steam controller whether it was reviews online or my wife or friends using it on my PC nobody really cared for it. The steam controller ergonomics are on point and the touch pads were literally a game changer. After some practice, the touch pads make for SIGNIFICANTLY better camera/aiming controls than a standard Dpad. Good to see that people are finally warming up to them! Trying to play my ps3 or using Xbox/ds4 controller on PC makes aiming feel impossible now lol the touch pads (again with practice) allow for much better precision controls.
Game Gear: I eat through batteries like a fat kid at a buffet! Steam Deck: Hold my beer Loving it though XD Bought a power brick specifically for play while out. If you do plan to travel with it i do suggest a hard case
@@CragScrambler I'm being silly. Yeah, with settings tweaks and stuff you can get some good hours from it, but I did try Cyberpunk at max settings and it gave me an estimated hour and 40 minutes or so Of course, never gonna play that for that long with those settings. Best to turn it down just for heat reasons alone.
@@Praxus42 On the same note I installed Black ops 3 and playing zombies gives me an estimated battery life of an hour when near 100%. Not bad but I sadly manage to die before it gets too close to dying 😮💨
You know what the Steam Deck also only has? Supporting analog triggers and gyro at the same time. Well, the Steam Controller and dualshock/dualsense also have this but it angers me to no end that no other third party controllers I have with analog triggers and gyro can’t do both at the same time; probably because of most of them having Switch compatibility.
Honestly as cool as they are I would rather have them be removed and place the normal d pad and other buttons in their place to make it less bulky but that’s just me
Anyone who thinks this has never done a radial menu inventory bind setup with the trackpads. By using "Radial menu" with the trackpads in steam input, it gives you 40 (You're reading that correctly, 40) additional "button" inputs, 20 per trackpad. This used to be amazing on Steam Controller but you typically had to use a modeshift button to swap between analog stick/mouse functionality and the radial menu functions, but because steam deck has dual analog, you have free reign to just use the touchpads like that undisturbed, and it's great. Touchpads are the most underrated part of the steam deck and even the steam controller.
@@WMan37 Ya I looked up radial menu after reading your comment and watch some dude playing around on star citizen with a steam controller pretty cool considering you don't have a keyboard so you changed my mind ill take the trackpads lol use them for games that actually need more buttons 😄
@@RobBobCornOnTheCob I love to use radial menu binds for either inventory or quick access to functions. For example, on my steam controller, in the game Warframe instead of picking abilities with the DPad and casting them with RB, I have RB set to modeshift my right touchpad into 4 ability buttons in a radial menu on the trackpad I use to aim, so I don't even have to lift my thumb off my aiming touchpad OR movement stick to cast abilities. My left trackpad has access to 10 gear menu items. Try flick stick + gyro aim once in a while too, steam input is insane with how much you can customize it. One of the main reasons I'm looking forward to the steam deck is because I'm so looking forward to having all those inputs beyond what a regular controller does available to tinker with. Protip: If you're using touchpads to aim and not your analog stick, set it up to swipe your character's look 45 degrees per comfortable swipe, but use gyro to fine tune the aim within those 45 degree swipes.

"Steam Tag"
Thought I was trippin
It functions like a trackpad the reason being it is a trackpad
You can also use the trackpads for new button inputs as well. It's possible to give yourself 4 new buttons on one trackpad
Or you can make it a radial menu with even more buttons
On pc, steam can also be used to utilize ds4/dualsense trackpad to be like this
Theres more to it too, you can customize it from a hotwheel to a scroolwheel and etc
It's a really cool input method
With first person games the right track pad is as good as a mouse. Accurate aiming vs analog. So good.
It works amazingly. I was playing a game not optimized for the Deck and it was as good or better than using a mouse. It’s very responsive, almost feels like a trackball.
It defaults to trackball mode but can be switched to normal mouse pointer control.
