- 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S Review Driving The Last Analog Air Cooled Porsche 911. The Porsche 993 variant of the 911 was introduced in 1995 and was huge leap towards what we see today in the 992 platforms. Porsche incorporated a tactile power steering system, VarioRam induction and aluminum front and rear subframes with a sophisticated multi link rear suspension. This proved crucial for better handling, rear turn in rear steer effect and better ride quality over prior G Body and 964 models. Powered by a NA 3.6 lier flat 6 engine with 282hp and 250ftbs of torque mated to a 6 speed transaxle make this one of the best driving old school 911's today. The Porsche 993 is the last air cooled Porsche and the last of the modern classic iterations of the 911 platform. It is the perfect size inside and out and feels so analog and old school that purists have blown up the market on these older cars through the years that placed them into highly collectible status. If you want to see more content on the Porsche 993 Carrera S please let me know as we start on this project soon.

Just bought my first Porsche 993 and I am so excited. As a kid it was the one in the poster on my wall.
Enjoy it these are special cars
I can tell you what the market is going to do. The market is going to make perfect cars that have computer operated everything and will drive and accelerate near flawlessly. So flawlessly that the inputs of the driver wont determine as much. They'll be automatic transmission also. No need for air cooling anymore. This Porsche made this way will never be made quite this way again. Over a 5 year period prices will go up or down depending on whatever. In 50 years you'll pay a kings ransom to own one. In 150 years only the super rich can own something like this. Count how many people there are on the planet it's increasing. Every year the number of these cars decreases. Be it from a car accident, break down, or some other calamity. That means as time goes on fewer and fewer of these originals will exist. Certain colors and interiors become more rare. They can print more dollars at the treasury, and they will. They will not print more of these.
Dream car!
Honestly rather have this than something newer and faster.
Love the analog, industrial aesthetic!
yeah these cars are more special than anything new today for many reasons. we think alike
Definitely me too bro 👍🏻
Nice.
I've a 1996 993 C2 iris blue metallic, 66,000 miles, 6-speed manny tranny, varioram, LSD. No CEL, no oil leaks. Multi-show full-concours winner. I'm never selling it.
I really like when u go into the history of cars like last week with the Magnum Ferrari
The subtitles translated the engine noise to “[music]” this is the first time I’ve seen that 👏🏼👏🏼 absolutely amazing
Thats cool
Phil, definitely want to see more content on the 993 C2S. Thx, for sharing!
Awesome discussion and expertise as always, more please!
Safe to say that a 993 is my dream Porsche. I’ll pass on any of the modern stuff for one of these.
yeah they are awesome cars I came close to buying another but so hard to find really good ones these days. So neat how they feel old in a way but modern enough to enjoy
“The Last Analog ….911” - Old school, analog feel - Sounds like the perfect car for Analog Guy. Love seeing these classic, simple, old school cars kept in good condition and more importantly, actually driven for the sheer joy of DRIVING. Thanks, and would so see follow up videos.
updated videos coming soon once we tear into the project.
Yes please , more on this car!
full professional video on this 993 C2S coming soon, head over to my Instagram to see some content of this project completed it came out incredible and I drove it today. autofanatic_cars on IG
Have the same exact car, Ocean blue metallic with grey interior C2S, They threw in the turbo body on the regular Carrera and called it C2S for the first time at no charge! Bought new in 1997, keeper!
nice what was the MSRP back then on yours? how many miles on it? these are the last of the breed
@@autofanaticcars 68k plus options, can't go 78k. Have the tip on it. I have about 11k miles on it 😀
Awesome car. I would enjoy more knowledge and content about these cars for sure.
More to come!
Cool all the good reviews about 993, how about on the flip side of that coin ? Any review about that?
Yes! Would love content on the work to be done on this car. Thanks.
You got it!
@@autofanaticcars Hello, what are the differences between the S 993s and regular ones? And are there mechanical differences?
Back when the turbo came out that, that was the model I wanted back at 98 what was it 993 turbo silver the same rims that this guy has, my other buddy also had a 76 stroked it out to a 3 L i’d love to see more videos on this car Phil!,.. so crazy to see the turbos skyrocket!
Awesome, more Porsche content please
coming soon
You mentioned you had a 993 Turbo. Would be interested in hearing more about the driving differences and feel of the HP difference between the C2S and the TT. I’m in the market for one and trying to decide which. Thanks
Beautiful car but can anyone explain to me why they all seem to have left hand sided wheels look at the rotation of the wheels ?
Beautiful 911!
You gotta see it now i full restored it and customized it from a bare shell a feature video will be posted in April
That is real 911!
Wait till you see what I did to this car full restoration and customization . Il be doing a short highlight video soon as im
About to deliver it
@@autofanaticcars I also want to buy something fresh without buying 993!
Stunning car!
It really is!
Man at certain rpm that sounds just like my Subaru Legacy with the flat 6 I have!
Go for it Phil you picked a winner! Better than the 355? Definitely more driveable? Looks good in blue or in attic silver!
older Porsche and Ferrari are both awesome and very different cars in general i love both regardless.
So I was in my senior year of high school when the last air cooled models came out in fact I remember Jerry getting the last one if I’m correct, my buddy has a couple Porsches 996 turbo and a GT three but coming back to this car is still timeless to me even though it felt like it was just yesterday this car came out you know what I mean?
Great video. Do you know the German company called Kaeger Retro.. they build beautiful 964 based on the 993.. amazing !
We are doing a full blown custom build on this 993 C2S now its coming out amazing and once we are finished il shoot a full video to highlight the build
More content please!!!
I have one of these cars (1997 C2S) It is everything he says and more. I'm 69 but feel like an 18-year kid every time I drive it. I can't wipe the smile off my face. The car has VarioRam, not VarioCam. Substantial difference when you hit 5000 Rpm.
yes thanks i got confused on this with the later cars. these are fun cars and perfectly balanced without ever feeling afraid to push it.
Buddy got a 97 C2S with turbo tail and the turbo twist wheels for college graduation - it was the Brumos car at the NY autoshow in 1997. Black/motorsound package - sold it for what he paid for it after 18k miles of driving and 5 years old.
wow i remember that car from the Auto Show. Best times ever!!!
Love the 993, second only to the 930 Turbo!
930 Turbo is a fav of mine as well but they are very rough to drive where as the 993 still feels old but bearable for long stints on backroads without being exhausted afterwards. still love all the older 911 more than the new stuff
Please Sir may we have more content? 👍✌️☮️
Nothing like the traditional Porsche
Yo yo buddy!
❤️❤️❤️
The 993 was introduced in Europe in 1994. Power steering was introduced in the 964.
I'd love to see as much as possible about this Car, any chance your swapping the Head unit? Really doesn't work with the car
i agree one thing I will be addressing is the head unit and door speaker grills as they look out of place in the cabin. We are sourcing parts now and picking the car up soon to work on it.
@@autofanaticcars very nice if the owner wants some newer tech but keep a somewhat original classic look. You could opt for a Porsche Classic radio
Nice condition but the OCD in me just can’t get over how off the “S” script is on the engine cover. Should be way closer to the “Carrera” script
mine has 30K miles on it how much should it be insured for please
depends on condition to be honest but the 98 Carrera S are ranging from $170k for a car that needs work to well over 200k for the best examples. Go back to the 09 recession these were $50k cars lol
cant understand how you were driving for so long in 2nd gear lol
I wasn’t driving very fast on these tight roads
a bit lazy with the gears
Talk to the hand
Believe it or not, life is a lot easier now; you don't have to drive a tractor 911.
Guess you’re part of the younger generation who prefers cars that almost drive themselves but older cars are for purists and the collector market values prove how desirable they still are today. Nothing wrong with the new stuff but older stuff requires more effort to enjoy and for many thats all part of the fun
@@autofanaticcars good point. Thanks for the nice complement as to youth but i’m 57. I love old cars. But let’s face it. These cars are 40 plus years old. That was a long long time ago. Most of those engineers are probably floating around heaven now. I guess i have just reached the point where i have let go of the past. Great videos though.
I get it i have clients who feel same regarding older cars and effort to own, drive and maintain them but i have others who spend millions on Singers and classics it all depends what you like. Trend is as most modern cars are overloaded with tech the market shows all affluent buyers scooping up older cars for insane prices still. We fully restored and modified this 993C2S and it drives so incredibly now
Too expensive now, I'd rather have a GT3..
997 GT3!!!!
@@autofanaticcars Absolutely, best gen GT3s!
No tech?? LOL
Terrible exterior design.
you clearly have no taste for the history of the 911 design.
