It's so nice to hear someone say there isn't as many walls as you were told. This whole time I've been practicing these scales for years only to realize that the greats knew the rules but broke them. This lesson, even though it seems so obvious, just freed my mind.
WoW! When I first started playing, this is how I played! Then, as you grow, you think you gotta learn the "right" way (which there isn't!) So you develop knowledge, and theory, and proper this, and correct that, but then you are something else.
You have reminded me in this lesson that you only learn the rules so you can break them, and get back to the magic of just playing what sounds good!! Thank you immensely for this 12 minutes you took to change my life!
The best teacher i ever had said "learn as much theory as you can cram into your head before it bores you then forget it all".
Legend: (noodling around) “hey this sounds pretty good! Think I’ll incorporate it in this lick here....”
Music theory teacher: “...and so we see that _______ uses a pentatonic minor infused with parts of the mixolydian heavily influenced with aeolian and sometimes delving into Dorian and Ionian territory....”
Legend: “Wow! That’s what I’ve been doing? Cool!”
Why do I always watch these videos when I'm nowhere near a guitar lol
I know that feeling
same.
Yea I'm currently taking a shit while watching this
Ha! Right?!
Haha true
I think the trick is really understand context of your note selection and the best way to cement what sounds "right" is...
*drumroll*
...Practice! Good old fashioned practice.
I've watched a lot of your lessons, and enjoy them... but THAT was some of the best musical advice I've ever heard. Thank you!
No joke, your instruction has me playing waaay better than before in just weeks! Dig it, Cheers!
For finding notes that work I like to chuck on a long backing track, get locked into the groove and then just try find stuff that that I like the sound of. For phrasing practice I like to set a very long delay time, then play a lick and have it come back at me, then play something that kind of answers it and so on. It helps me not just ramble on endlessly without rests and make sure I am actually trying to say something with what i play instead of just shredding scales.
hi, robert. thanks for your time and commitment. i've been playing for over 50 years and all my time is spent trying to get my original material to flow -- no time for theory, and it shows. music is one of the biggest challenges of my intellectual existence, but guidance like yours just confirms what i have found just floundering around the keyboard trying to just find what sounds right!
This is why I watch your videos. You EXPLAIN everything really well and it's easy to learn and apply. Nice job
great video. this is one of those things i stumbled across in my pentatonic obsession.
essentially it’s mixing the major and minor pentatonic together and adding the flatted fifth or blues note.
when mixing the major and minor pentatonic if you remove the minor third you have mixolydian. put the minor third back in and instead remove the major third and you have dorian.
so i like to call the mixed scale mixo-dorian. i suppose when you add in the flatted fifth you could call it the mixo-dorian-blues scale.
this is great stuff. 🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽
This is the best instruction I've ever seen for people that can't grasp music the way natural musicians can..I'm glad I signed up for your lessons!
I have been stuck in the basic P scale variants for almost 20 years, but basically flying blind. That direct major 3rd at 4:06 is the wonky Josh Homme note. That's freaking awesome. Thank you so much for all this useful knowledge in one video.
I gotta just say, your lessons are great man. You have re-taught me, or enlightened me many times on stuff I was already doing, but didn't know the specifics or scale paths in and out.
I'm an old Bluesy/Punk/Hardcore ear taught published A.S.A.P. card holder, on bass drums and production, but guitar has always been my secret fetish. Your channel is a much needed, straight forward, Rock & Roll breath of fresh air in the overly saturated aggro chug/shred-fest that is popular online guitar. You are teaching the fundamental elements of rock, but in a very comfortable and approachable way.
I dig it man.
Keep being Awesome.
Many thanks Robert, you kept it slow and simple and actually told us which
notes on which frets, with a little theory thrown in.
Thanks for not swamping us with theory.
Yngwie said it best (whether a fan or not)..."if it sounds good...it's good".
noooo he did not say thaT...20 years before EVH SAID THAT
I think every musician has said that in the last 80 years
Actually it was Benny Goodman who have said that during a live radio interview back in the 40's responding to some vetriolic comments made by jealous musicians.
Super cool video. I was in a bit of a rut, and this helped expand my options in ways I haven't considered. Thanks!
Great guitar sound, thanks for the lesson.
Nelson
Thanks for another great vid, Ribert! Augs & dims open things up so much!! Awesome
no matter how good I am or what I know how to play I am always picking up shit from you. just different ways of looking at things or how to apply them.your never closed minded and I will never stop learning. I appreciate everything you put on here brother.big to small, difficult to easy,it all matters.it all counts.noone knows everything.even when you throw famous licks or riffs out there,it keeps me from digging and figuring it out.All you do is much appreciated and put to use everyday. Thanks again to one of the more laid back coolest dudes doin this shit.
I was just messing with this and had no idea why it sounded good, you explained all of it. Thank you!
Its called the Blues Composite Scale but you cant play it like a scale it will sound rubbish. You have to learn Major and Minor blues licks ans pentatonic licks adding M3rd and M6th etc all separate then run licks into each other etc morphing major sounds into minor sounds etc like some sort of superimposing one over the other etc, Angus plays a lick in Let There Be Rock where he ascends with a major run and descends minor, sounds a perfect fit !
Robert! Great video lesson! I am going to try to incorporate this into my playing.
First time seeing you Robert and what a fantastic job you did here!!! I'll be checking out your other material now!!!
Great video, look forward to more scale tricks!!! Thanks!!
Hi Rob thanks for sharing your knowledge. Really enjoy your videos take care cheers
Thanks for posting this lesson. Huge help Robert. Peace from Boston.
Dang, bro....you really, really, want people to learn how to play. Kinda like a religious guy seeking a convert. lol you rock man.
haha thanks man

I've been thinking about this very concept lately, thanks for making it real.
Over time I've personally learned a lot from your channel! I wouldn't know a lot of stuff that I've learned from you. I'm not a Hatter, I respect every musician for there talents and passion for music. Plus a lot of us aren't born with talent like you pros. It's takes a lot of hard work to try and emulate what you show us. I take your lessons and apply them in my own way of course but it truly helps. There's a handful of guys out there on RUclips who are great you being at the too for me. But the point is, people who want to get better need to realize that no matter who inspires them the talent they need to get to another level is right in front of them, on there phone, computer what ever device. You'll hear many people in life say, If you want to be the better or the best you need to be around the best. Well thanks to the Internet, we've got you pros right in our pocket. Literally!! Thanks for all you do and put yourself out there for us people who truly take you seriously!!
Fantastic lesson, one of the best! Thanks a lot👍
Hey, Robert! Bro, you have the best transition clip on RUclips. That little clip of your hair with that very fast shreddy lick in the background. I love that thing
I think this is the inspiration my playing needed, thanks!
so glad it helped
Another great lesson! Thanks again!
I *love* the finish on that guitar, nice and thin, not so glossy, like a classic instrument.
this video is pure gold!
great job and greatings from germany
Sounds very distinctive and cool , very good eye opening info , nice gold to Gibby behind you too , thanks
"The pentatonic scale is...like a steak." Mind. Blown. \m/
That's all you needed to say my friend.

Love your videos dude..keep on rocking.. Greetings from austria
Love your lessons, style, attitude, etc. thanks.
Maestro Baker es muy util lo que nos manda felicidades gracias
Haha I have been experimenting with these recently so great timing. It makes a great step forward in your pentatonics
From your video in this channel, today i release my new single on my band. Thanks for keep sharing! It’s very helpful for me and inspired me to making a great riff! Greetings from Indonesia!
That guitar looks like a hungry whale.
Ivor Thomas LOL now that’s all I see when I look at that guitar! 😂
I wasn't sure if I liked that guitar until your comment . I do !
Yeah and look what it’s about to bite
Wow!!! It totally does!
Damn. Can't unsee that!
It was the ending back in black solo you were explaining how angus adds notes in to the scale to color it more.
Ahhh thats right thank you
Nice one Robert. Enjoyed this.
Yet another amazing lesson! I might have to enroll!
Thanks for giving us 12 different notes to use, who ever thought that 😂 just kidding great advice and slick weapons you have also
Good lesson, learning Carlos Santana songs is a good way to find extra notes that sound really good.
You and your channel extremely underrated, keep up the good work, I appreciate the he'll out of ur existence 😁
Great stuff Robert, thanks man! 👍
That's so cool
I can already feel the change
I hope the universe has been looking after you !
Major, minor, a little blues, some Myxolidian, Phrygian, Dorian and a dash of Lydian... put it in a blender and what you got? Goodness, you have goodness.
I have no idea what the hell the other four are like wut language you speakin?
@@metalrebel7506 no worries man, you only have to rock one or two ;)
Hino-U Canada Phrygian is my favorite
Yeppers .. That's my scale formula .. Mix them all up and amazingly they create some really awesome solos .. Then throw in the dreaded diminished and it goes off the rails for a moment and ties back in eloquently
@@lilrejct One of my favorites as well .. When I want that spooky Mummy going to pop out of the guitar feel
Dude what kind of guitar is that? It looks amazing
Love the Steak analogy!!!
You really are adding the notes of the chords of a major 12 bar blues to the blues scale. major 3rd from the I chord, the major 6th from the IV chord, and the major 2nd (and could add the major 7th) from the V chord.
Really really really good video for anyone learning the scales, sooo good. Thank you big dog!
Very useful thanks !
Just watched a couple of your older videos after seeing the short clip advertisement for the guitar lessons bundle -WHICH I THINK IS AN AWESOME DEAL 86% Discount!!!! YEAH!
It was the “5 Things You Need To Know Before Buying Your First Guitar” video.. You have a lot of subscribers and getting more everyday. A couple of points in the video about Having a PROPER SETUP and how it affects learning and even the desire to play. needs to be a recurring topic. I am 48 and been playing since I was 15, I WORKED HARD, sometimes 16-20 hours a day, and my skill level doesn’t reflect this because I DIDNT KNOW ABOUT SETUP, I thought the ease of playing came from how much I spent$$. NOT!
Around 2003 I learned about MIKES MUSIC in CINCINNATI !!!! OMG!!!! I feel that’s when I really began playing, my whole world changed with a SETUP!!!! Thanks for having this in your videos sometimes.. And telling about electric guitar is easier. You rock man, I like your videos, at first I didn’t know about ya though, LOL. I have to say that you are growing on me and I THINK YOU ROCK!!! I haven’t seen anyone else address those topics and I think it could be repeated every episode!!! THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEOS!!!!
Great lesson man!
Cool sound, cool lesson!
Really enjoy your lessons........ They are informative and light hearted and fun. Thanks for posting. I just subscribed to your channel. T
Best. Instructional. Video. Ever!
Very good lesson love it
Subscribed!.. Thanks for the great video!..impressive studio too!
Great lesson!
Thanks Robert!
Very helpful thanks 👍😀😀
Yep great technique. A lot of it is really blending Dorian and mixolydian and minor elements in. With a bit of thought about using 5ths and 3rds and 3rds of the 5th and so on.
Lol as I was typing this you literally said the same thing
so basically it's mixing major & minor into 1 scale. beautiful scale. i like it! thanks 4 sharing.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd uses the Pentatonic scale in the same way. He just pulls in notes from other scales to add to the pentatonic. It was in a video interview with Guitar Extreme... I think. Cheers for the lesson. Great video! :)
Robben Ford teaches altered pentatonic scales to practice to get the feel of the extra notes, but scales are still pentatonic. Example: in pentatonic scale replace 5th with flat 5th and practice that pentatonic which has more bluesy feel. Another example : replace flat 7 with 6th and play that pentatonic, gives it a sweeter feel. Or replace minor 3rd with major third like in video. Etc etc etc
Would you recommend learning where all the intervals are in each position of the pentatonic scale? Then it might be easier to know what notes to add and where they are in relation to the intervals in the pentatonic shapes???
good video dude, going to help a lot of people with these tips
I like to sort of combine blues and lydian notes
Your plant looks like it’s dying in the corner....
oh it def is
Can't handle the solos that's how a plant face melts
All the blues, the plant must be overdosed on blues
Hahaha, he melted it!
Needs more metal, as proved by mythbusters. @@RobertBakerGuitar
Great video. If I am not mistaken, adding the major 2nd and major 6th makes it Dorian? I dig adding the major 3rd with the flat 5!!!!! I’m going to work that out!!
Thanks Robert.
Awesome lesson Robert. .break out of that box..boom👍
You never disappoint my man!
Most of us do that naturally by bending or just adding notes that sound good over chords being played. Good video to help us think about what we are doing instead of just doing it.
Interesting. I play a brand of like noise rock and grunge kinda or whatever you might call it but I definitely have always done this. Much different on the phrasing but same deal. Sweet, man.
You're so right. Listen to Jimmy Page Nobody's Fault But mine as an example of major/minor ambiguity.
Another great video robert
Michael Schenker is very good at combining major and minor shapes or switching back and forth.
Very cool man, thanks 😎👍
another spot on video!
Nice useful gem tips. Can you please provide some interesting legend chord progression or chords which shounds unique.
This is the single best video on giving flavor to the pentatonic scale
I've always conceptualized this as a Dorian scale with the flat 5th added. The major third should not be thought of as part of the scale per se as you want to use only where appropriate. For example, if you are playing a major blues and the chord changes to IV (dominant), that major third (relative to the tonic) isn't going to sound good against the flat 7 of the IV chord. My two cents. The first solo in Crossroads is a good example, Clapton plays licks including the major third (C#) over the I chord and avoids it when the IV chord comes around.
Love yer stuff 🤠🎶🎸
Cool, Thanks bro
I Wil never get that good. Killer information! Thanks
Awesome video!
Nice video and explanation. Could you further explain in which settings this is applicable? I get the idea that the greats often switch from major to minor or add certain notes to a pentatonic but I struggle to find places to use it and encounter the problem that adding some note outside of the actual scale can sound out of key really fast. What need the other instruments in the band to play in order for this to work well is probably the question...
Awesome!
Wow.......very cool lesson. Free your mind........!
I appreciate this free knowledge. Thanks so much. Also, it was really helpful for me to stop learning box shapes visually and learn them by ear. (Then your method of adding notes will be obvious to the ear and not just a new shape to learn. Am I making sense?)
You're amazing at teaching bro, not too slow or fast. Thanks!
My only problem is most guitarist don't have your training or a good enough ear to utilize the 'extra' notes correctly. A great video for me would be some examples of this expanded minor pentatonic being played over different chord progressions, blues/minor/major progressions and then adding passing notes. Also can add different notes to major pentatonic scale. Great video!!!
That guitar sounds great good lesson
