    The newest lesson in the channel is all about Allan Holdsworth's use of Olivier Messiaen's 3rd Mode of Limited Transposition. The idea behind this lesson comes from Patreon Monthly Video Sweepstakes winner Raul Tizze. In the video I show examples of a couple of different fingerings and give some tips on how to juggle the notes around to hide the symmetrical sound a bit.
    Hope you guys enjoy the video!

    I saw a video,an instructional video of Allan Holdsworth where he described that he sees the whole fretboard as ONE WHOLE scale...he seemed to understand the fretboard in a completely different level than anyone else..
    his visual memory retention was unbelievable.It threw for a loop when I heard him say his first instrument of choice was not a guitar that he disliked the guitar.

      Yes sir! This scale is actually mentioned in that video! It's scale number 10 out of the 10 scales he mentions.
      (I am actually currently working on a lesson explaining those 10 scales!)
      He was the greatest!

      +ELITE COMBAT FITNESS CENTRAL Holdsworth wanted to play sax as a kid, but his parents gave him an acoustic guitar. A lot of his style can be understood as an attempt to sound like a sax: midrangy, compressed tone, extreme legato and hiding pick attack to sound smooth like a sax. Use of whammy bar for the inflections, and to add energy to vibrating strings to get more (appearance of) sustain.
      I believe he also dabbled in violin a bit.

    Interesting scale. Very easy to visualize but applying it tastefully would be a challenge. As you said, it's a tension building device, so it would probably not be used for more than a quick burst between phrases unless you are really wanting an out of the box sounding experience.

    This scale can also be seen as being made of two Augmented Scales a minor second (or minor third) apart. Like B Augmented scale plus C Augmented scale, or C Augmented Scale plus D# Augmented...If. C Aug = C, D#, E, G, G#, B; and D# Aug = D#, F#, G, A#, B, D, eliminating the doublings and starting from the 'root' C, we get: C, D, D#, E, F#, G, G#, A#, B. Thanks for sharing!

      Why is it that so many people go into Holdsworth lesson videos to troll with blues comments?

    There is no 'secret scale' . Everything is right in front of you already. Its just a matter of how one puts a series of notes together as their own custom scales. Though many will tell you the opposite - such as classically trained theory professors and instrument lessons instructors- there are no rules that must be strictly adhered to in music. If people did that, then music would be altogether boring. Consider Coltrane whom I see AH has an affinity with . He broke boundaries as did AH. But if they stuck to the 'rules' none of their music would have ever been created.

    • @Gregorypeckory
      @Gregorypeckory 4 года назад

      Nobody I know keeps a running tally of the hours they've practiced since starting on an instrument. Even if they did, people vary too much for that to be any kind of indicator of how long it will take you to reach a similar skill level.

    • @juanantoniomusic

      To be honest, it's sort of what Greg Vinson said. Sometimes I practice an hour, sometimes 2, sometimes 5 or 6 depending on the day. I keep a tight work schedule so sometimes it's hard to get a full hour in so I might do 15 mins now, 15 later and it all piles up to about 1 or 2 hours a day.
      I did use to practice a lot more when I was younger though. I used to do 6 hours a day for a brief 2 month stint. But that is very rare nowadays. The important bit is more how you practice than how long you practice. You have to be focused on the task, be organized, consistent with what you're working on and have clear goals.
      I also like to take a day off every week to avoid injury. Let the body heal a bit since I've had a lot of hand issues over the years.

      @@jackjohnson4808 If you just wanted to learn a scale, why did you take the time to complain? You do know that you didn't have to listen to the whole lesson, right?
      You know you could have learned the scale, then went off to practice instead of hanging out long enough to get impatient, then longer to post a complaint about the gift you received, right?
      If there's a valuable takeaway for you from the experience, it will be that becoming a more appreciative patient student of music will help you far more than any particular scale. Become a good, respectful student, and only then will it be time to get on with getting a new scale under your belt.

    The annoying thing about Holdsworth fans is that they all predictably sound like Holdsworth. Hardly innovative

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic  4 года назад +4

      I think you might be generalizing there a bit. Yes, there are a lot of Holdsworth copies, but Plini, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Frank Zappa, Guthrie Govan and tons of others are all Holdsworth fans and non of their music sounds even remotely close to Holdsworth.
      The same argument could be said about Yngwie and Zakk Wylde fans (do I even have to mention SRV fans?) . Tons of copies, but stating that all of their fans are copies is just a generalization.

      Check out some Fredrik Thordendal's work with Meshuggah. Incredibly innovative and unique. I admit his earlier solos were much more like Holdsworth, but his new solos are incredibly unique. He makes a living off of this scale too.
