  • In this lesson I break down the 'Holdsworth' pentatonics and give an easy (ish) overview of his style and a few harmonic ideas. I'll go over his more 'outside' ideas in part 2 (coming soon).
    No Holdsworth is easy, but there are a few consistant tricks and patterns you can spot if you listen hard enough. These ideas can yeild some interesting sonics that you can 'borrow' for your own style.
    If you want to get into Holdsworths legato style it's best explained by the likes of Tom Quayle, Sam Bell or Marshall Harrison, so check these guys out.
    Here is the accompanying video of me improvising in the stlye of Holdsworth using some of the ideas in this (and part 2) video

    good teaching and humble like Allan. I saw him play on his first American tour with maybe 10 people in the audience. Allan was at the bar having a beer before the show. I went up and thanked him for coming. He said he was looking forward to the show and shook my hand. Been a disciple ever since. Wish he would have quit the drinking and smoking. He might still be around. r.i.p. Allan.

    My absolute dream is to play like budget Allan Holdsworth

    • @sturoc0
      @sturoc0 10 месяцев назад +2

      Erase that dream and create your niche. Know this : Allan hated hearing other guitarists who copied and sounded like him some almost identical, almost. So many players concentrate on sounding and playing like him, but AH has already done it. Why be a clone ? Explore. Understand what Allan was doing creatively i.e. the way he approached building certain modes/scales on his own by not staying within theory rules. Or you can just let the feel and emotions out and play whatever you like - total freedom. If you are worried what others will think about your playing, then you are losing your identity already. We all have our idols and early on wanted to sound and play like them. But as you grow, you will find all that becomes boring because its an 'already done' thing by someone else. Don't get trapped into that.

    I was s'posta be doin' somethun else, clicked, kept gettin snagged, hooked, reeled in! Yeah, yeah, I know its life changing, and that I'm ready and will acquire it posthaste as its naggingly vital and too easy even if I forget the little ticket I wrote up on it. Its an infection I needed, a virus I clicked on. Subscribed

    I used to kinda dislike the double notes on these 3 notes per string pentatonics and played a lot of patterns where one can avoid them.

    Stuff that gave me an "Aha!" moment:
    7:10 - Each finger you use on the instrument is a DRUMMER. Meaning that you and every note you play is just as responsible for rhythm and groove as everyone else and THEIR notes.
    20:22 - GREAT way to play clean fast pentatonic scales!
    22:20 - Three different pentatonic scales can fit over any diatonic chord that isn't a viiº. Find the relative major of your chord and choose I, IV, or V, OR choose their "relative minors" of ii, iii, and vi.

      This is a middle class scottish accent. He would Doune ok reading the news. Allan was very Yorkshire. Amazing that 3 of Britain s greatest guitarists all came from the north of England. Allan from Bradford john mclaughlin from Doncaster and Ollie Halsall from Southport

    I played like Allan Holdsworth one night,then l woke up in a cold sweat..never the same again😵....would you be🥺..R.I.P. Allan " Guru" Holdsworth❤️✌️👍

    This is no way a negative comment but id say the 'holdsworth sound' is largely dependent on Allan's sheer vituosic speed and accuracy. Play it slow and its a long list of tones.. play his outside notes slow and youre not even impressing the dog who thinks everything you do is awesome. The magic is in his effortless lightspeed legato that pushes any player's wtf button and sends shivers down your fragile ego 😅
