What with having the Everglades on one side and the Atlantic on the other, water has to settle somewhere, especially during the rainy season. Sometimes it will take several days for the water to drain from a storm, so there are tons of canals and retention ponds that have been built to help alleviate the problem, but it's really just a band-aid on a bullet wound.

      It shouldn't mean destroying and polluting the environment, a wide range of methods for true coexistence with the natural world already exist (we have agricultural methods on both plant and animal sides that replicate natural habitats and benefit wildlife, a ridiculous amount of renewable resources just waiting to be used on a larger scale, and a wide selection of buildings and structures that can be built in a way that has little to no negative impact on the natural world), but it is cheaper to use the destructive alternatives, and we built our economy around said destruction for some stupid reason, so most people will go for the inefficient and careless expansionism.
      The fact that so many people would rather find a new world to mess up instead of just playing nice with the biosphere we already have is baffling.

    To everyone saying that urban expansion makes us look like an infestation, only around 1% of the earth's surface is urban area. These areas are incredibly small compared to the vast amount of natural area that has been lost to agriculture, particularly for more wasteful uses such as ranching. 50% of the habitable area of the earth is agriculture. Of that 50%, 77% is ranching. Ranching makes only 18% of the global calorie supply. This is the land use you need to be concerned about.

    • @tetra4289
      @tetra4289 3 года назад +3

      You don't even need to be concerned about that if you understand that over the past centuries, we have been able to increase the agricultural yield by thousands of percent. It's not much about the space we have, but what we do with it. In very poor countries the majority of the population works in agriculture. In the richest countries, only 2 or 3 percent of the population does. This is the core of human development: innovation in crops and techniques to get the best outcome and the least hazard risk when the harvest comes around.
      And there are still so many challenges to overcome, meat consumption is certainly one of them as it increase rapidly and it also represents a significant share of the co2 emissions.
