What creeped me out as a kid, was the fact there were no other actual beings like Sackboy, you are completely alone and the closest you can get to seeing other beings in a level were just lifeless cardboard cutouts. Unless you played coop.

I love that aspect of LBP1, having to cobble up your own character or creature instead of just putting in a sackbot that you can style just like your character

Something I found creepy was how the backgrounds of all the levels looked like real places... specifically the gardens. That looks like someone's backyard. And you hear the ambience of planes, birds chirping, there's lawn mowers, gnomes, decorations... all of those things, yet the background is completely devoid of all human life. It's like everyone was raptured, and the only sentient beings left are little knit sack things, running around doing the bidding of toys.

The loneliness that comes from playing the first game today plays a big part in the creep factor for me, it just feels... dead? Now that the online functions are gone, especially create mode, I expect to see my old friends crushing each other or using some custom made uzi/vehicle they copied from somebody else, but now it's just me, alone in a massive box.
Another thing about Create mode that creeped me out was the backgrounds. The cave and city ones specifically just felt so weird, you hear the ambience of this massive city, you can hear people talking in the distance, but there is nobody. Just an empty street with dark foggy alleyways, it makes me think of somebody in the fog, ready to jump out at me. The cave is also massive and foggy, with the only ambience being water dripping (Ifrc) and wind, the way the backgrounds would just move rapidly and then load in right in front me freaked me out as well.
In the third game there was also the "Burning town" ambience in Create mode, which on its own is out of place, but it also used distorted and broken voicelines from the old Newton VA who passed away during development, it also sounds like it's coming from some kind of speaker far off in the distance, but you can't discern the direction it's coming from.

One thing that is creepy about the construction level is its music. The song is called "Atlas" by Battles, and it contains a building amalgam of strange guttural sounds, and lyrics that say "The people won't be people when they hear this sound" repeated over and over during the chorus along with other nonsense lyrics, ending the song with a long, awkwardly extended period of repetitive noises-- presumably the sounds that will cause people not to be people. Whatever that implies.

I'm kind of surprised that the voices in metro weren't mentioned! In the metropolis background, when you have it on in create mode and just listen to the ambience, you can very clearly hear the sounds of the city that imply there's genuine human life going on just behind what you can see. I see people mention that some of the noises also sound like a woman crying, but I don't really hear it as vividly.
LBP is one of my favorite series of all times, but it actually is one of the reasons why I have a strange phobia to out of bounds glitches or things not loading in immediately when they're supposed to due to the fact I wore my disc out good making it load the backgrounds and stuff slow. The backgrounds also in general just freaked me out a lot as a little kid because it always felt so out of place, the rest of the game was a cutesy wool game, like even the default create mode background was fine, but the realistic backgrounds that were snapshots of real world places always weirded me out and honestly I think it got worse for me when LBP2 came out because of how busy they were.

FINALLY someone else agrees on the slight creepiness of Little Big Planet! I only played the first game in INCREDIBLY brief moments at my grandparents' home & always found the game unsettling. I essentially played the beginning over & over because I never felt like progressing through the game itself, lol. I barely remember anything about the game let alone the series, but the knitted character you play as always unnerved me as a child & it still does now. It did leave a mark on me despite how little I played that game, which is honestly impressive
Also welcome back! Glad I saw this vid on my YT home page ^-^

LBP was always so comfy to me, that I just kinda... Overlooked anything creepy. It was only as I became a horror fan, and looking back, that I began to see how the game series I grew up with instead of Minecraft, funnily enough, mirrored it in so many ways. Comfortable and nostalgic, user-generated online maps and animations, an incredible base game, and even that odd, lonely, creepy side of the two games that only shines through when you really think about it.

I was always terrified of the backgrounds. I hated how small I felt every time, I’ve never been able to make a level that has anything other than a blank background. Every time I fell out of bounds (this is in other games too) I would panic and restart the level. I also hate the textures loading in when you switch backgrounds, and you’re stuck in this giant grey/black space. I think 3 has the scariest backgrounds, but all of the games are like this

As someone who played this game for i think 12 years, id say you did a wonderful job talking about the subtle creepyness of this game :) while i never found it that scary the first game does give off a unique feeling of emptiness and somewhat oddity that the other games cant really give off but i mean we are all different, but i guess i do understand how specifically lbp 1 can be creepy :) its nice seeing this game from someone elses perspective :D
the scariest thing to me in the first game which still freaks me out to this day somewhat is the pause ambience if you pause while creating a level in lbp 1,
the fact you are stuck in a basically giant void box and you have this bizzare soundtrack playing in the background that feels like you did something wrong..i cant find audio for it but like, if you know you know, just boot up lbp1 and try it, maybe youll understand, also spectacular video! 10/10 and subbed :D

  • @jwalster9412

Fun fact: when i first played the original LBP, i probably never played the story (largely because i was to young to know what a story was), but this story. Has a weird familiarity to it that i cannot describe, maybe its just the uncanny realism, but i feel like ive gone through it even tho i dont think have although, i do remember the kind dide destinktly, because he was regferenced outside of LBP1, inside of several levels which i could play in lbp2-3. i havent played any of these games in over 6 years, but i do remember hating lbp1 the most because it was discomforting in so many ways. Especially the strangly realistic objects all over the place, and sensors/emmers having faces didn't help.
9:48 this gave me nightmares when i was a young kid. The fact that it makes those sounds when you walk by it, and the general style ot has, every time i went through the create menu i would specifically avoid it.

I have only ever beaten Boom Town once... Man I wish I could actually beat LBP1. Such a classic.
14:11, you fucked me up with that. I was playing LBP the same time I was playing Pokemon Pearl, so that coincidence REALLY hits home for me.
As for the creepiness, I always felt a bit of weirdness to it. I didn't know the word back then, but it has an air of liminality to it, like the backgrounds are so empty, you load in any story level background in the editor and it's so dead and creepy. The blur and grain to the screen, the strange sound effects, like idk what it is, the create mode flying sounds always stuck out as out of place to me. They still do.
I always kinda chocked it up to me being a coward though. I've always been really easy to spook in games. Aside from horror, funny enough. But like I always have this deep feeling that I'm gonna turn a corner and see something, or that I'm gonna accidentally find something I was never intended to see. It's a lot less common in my adult life, but as a kid I was always prepared for the worst.

I would love to watch an LBP video to remind me of my childhood’s best game, and I’m probably thinking LittleBigPlanet 1 is the first LBP game I played before I moved on to LittleBigPlanet 2 which is the game I played the most, and sometimes the 3rd being LBP Karting, it’s terribly sad that Sony is just treating the fandom like it’s just a rumble of problems, bad bugs, glitches, and bad exploits that keep on thrashing the game before the LBP 3 servers shut down as it used to stay alive until today, to me to be honest, I’m just gonna blame the rushed game (LBP 3) on Sony because they are the ones to rush Sumo Digital on the game because of darn holidays and maybe other stuff, the good thing is you can still buy the DLCs and play other story levels out there, the only difference is that the servers are just permanently shut down.
LittleBigPlanet deserves more than just be thrown away… it deserves to be recognized, more attention, more respect, and raise up, even though LittleBigPlanet 3 is old, and I don’t even care about that, I just hope that Sony won’t do anything stupid like forcing the developers to rush on something, that’s not how art goes.

My love for these games is insurmountable. My first system was the ps2, but lbp was the first game I ever played that I truly loved. I would definitely say that 90 percent of the game for me as a kid, and even now, was all good vibes. But I know exactly what you mean by feeling slightly uneasy during some levels, in lbp 1 especially. Like in create mode, when you do the little pause function that freezes the entire level, that droning sound ALWAYS freaked me out. Not only that, but the bare ambience of The Wedding when turned to night is very creepy to me. Even though most of the horror levels I remember were from the second game (which is my favorite), I do remember one specific horror level from lbp 1. I think it was called THE TENANT, and it was actually a really depressing feeling, psychological horror level, if I remember correctly. Reminded me of that game Neverending Nightmares (if you remember what that is).
Anyways, I’ve made this way too long, I’m so sorry to make you read all this. 😭 I always love when someone talks about little big planet because it’s probably my favorite game series of all time. (Great video though, your content seems kewl)

One thing that always unsettled me about LBP were always the template levels when creating, they are full levels, but it's lacking of anything, no characters, no music, most of the obstacles are impossible, there is nothing moving. And yes, while I get that those factors are what it's supposed to be so you can make your own levels with them, those factors would really creep me out when messing with the templates, it always felt like there had to be another presence in those soulless environments, watching.

Idk, the faint uncanny-ness of some of the game's aspects feels like what ties it together for me. It makes it so painfully 2010's

Fun fact: if you use the sticker tool to remove the stickers from the moving hand object, you’ll find that they literally used images of fingers to texture it.
    Pretty gross

Lbp 1 had a lot of good community horror levels. I too like Lbp 1's more realistic artstyle. Lbp vita also has some creepy moments like the Hollows.

The creepy feeling felt from this game always felt like what a kid had put together, what the child sees is what they truly wanted. A fur ball with eye and a nose, obviously it’s a dog to the kid, to anyone else with out the suspension of disbelief this is a weird cobbled thing meant to look like a dog. This entire game emphasizes the fact that this game is a cobbled together wonder from dreams and imagination, so it’s not going to look pretty to anyone who isn’t viewing the world in the children’s eyes. Cause of that creepy nature I ended up loving this rough style and almost nonsensical clash of characters. But got to be honest about the fact the crypt is just super creepy and one of the authors bonus levels that have you become an egg and enter this artistic world the author dreamt of creating.(can’t remember it’s name)

Lol loved the video and I’d never thought I’d see a video of LBP do a Breaking Bad Reference 😂
Also the scariest level for me would be the Magicians Palace. The dark environment with the song is what made it creepy, which might be my own problem considering the majority of the community loves it and finds it relaxing, but I always found it disturbing. Especially at the end when the magician just flies down and dissolves everything with the tip of his finger to transform the Temples to the Wilderness. It always made me feel uneasy. There is footage in the beta of LBP The Dancers Court, of a dancer with its head on fire. 😐
    Great video nonetheless!!👍✌️🔥🔥😎

i started watching this channel literally a day ago only to find that there hadn't been an upload in a year, was a bit disappointed. what are the chances of this happening?
Just finished the video and I completely agree, I've felt similarly about this game for a long time without really being able to describe it. It's definitely a feeling only present in the first game and not at all in the other two, but imo there's a slightly similar atmosphere in the first new super mario bros game too, while maybe not to the same extent. It always just felt darker than the others for some reason

HYEAHHHH, LBP MENTIONED. Honestly, a fun watch, man. I always did feel a sense of unease when I was younger, so I suppose I'm part of the problem too lol. This was a fun watch, I've never seen anyone use the chun-li costume ever lol. Also, the plot hole you describe in 15:44 is actually not true, at the end of the segment, the collector does drop him iirc? Idk i could be wrong and we're both complaining about the story of a 16 year old kids game lol. Fun watch, great job
