- Why do razor blades dull so quickly? When learning how to shave for the first time, or the 1000th, you might ask yourself, why don't razors last longer?! Why do razors get blunt so quickly! And Why are Razors so expensive? Why Can't Gillette, Doller Shave Club, Harry's or Wilkinson Sword do any better? Personna tried in 1970 with their Tungsten Personna 74 but it quickly failed... why? In this video I answer all these questions and explore the real-world technology and material science that designed a razor that lasts for 000 shaves, the diamond razor!

The algorithm started picking up on your channel and I'm glad it is, great content! Good luck :)
Me too! Thanks for the support
Oh wow this channel is definately going to rocket in subscribers.
Thanks, fingers crossed!
Here before 100k! Can't believe I stumbled on such a quality channel with less than 1000 subs, I should buy a lottery ticket
Thank you! 100k subs? That’s seems a million miles away, took me 4 months to get my first subscriber! Glad you like the videos
Ludvig Persson 1,56 k subscribers right now
when I 'win' the lottery, the first thing I want to buy is the Zafirro Iridium razor, it has sapphire in the blades. The razor costs $100,000, but the blades are suppose to last 'forever'.
Yeah, im on the new influx train as well and this is what my dwindling subscribed section needed
Good stuff!
Well made, well researched, great script, and most importantly, interesting. Your videos are very well done and I cannot even think of anything that you could really improve on, except _maybe_ audio quality, but that something almost every channel can improve on. Keep doing what you are doing, and keep choosing interesting topics that haven’t been overly covered, and you will do great. Good luck man, I thoroughly enjoy your content and wish you success!
Thanks, yes audio quality is a bane of my existence. I want everything to be perfect but without a sound studio or some proper acoustic dampening tiles on the walls it is so difficult. If I ever make any money from these videos I’m going to invest in a few bits of hardware to make them better.
@@BehindDesigns I wouldn’t worry about it to much for now, as having a microphone as good as yours is a gift at this level. If you really want to, you could make your voice slightly louder and add some low background music, which can hide microphone quality somewhat, but I don’t think you need to do that. Thank you for replying, and good luck!
And I still shave with a cheap bic razor 🤣. Awesome channel man, I’m gonna keep commenting on them to lure more subs for you!
Thanks, New video out in a few hours!
BIC makes some great DE razor blades. Give a packet of BIC Chrome Platinum a try.
I have heard that Gillette once surveyed American men to ask if they would buy an expensive procedure that meant they never had to shave again. Apparently the overwhelming response was no because the act of shaving itself was an important morning routing (ritual of masculinity?). Perhaps the challenge of using a blunt blade is part of this?
Personally I grow a show beard and use clippers with a No.1 comb every two weeks to keep it in check. I used an electric razor befor that. Daily shaving with a safety razor was a pain. I would have bought personna74 blades if they were available.
Finally: “bleeding edge”?!?! You had to go there! I had to laugh. 😂
I guess technically you could go for a laser treatment, and permanently remove your facial hair. But as you say I think that shaving is almost meditative for a lot of men, 10 mins of peace and quiet every morning!
I’m glad you spotted the joke at the end! Thanks for watching.
Aha! Another who noticed 😏
I worked on an R&D sight for p&g and this guy has the company culture exactly right. There is a lot of constant innovation about the small details of a product that set them apart from their other mega corporation competitors like Unilever and Henkel, but increasingly the companies they're battling are fresh startups or smaller local brands that offer better value and target a specific market more successfully. It's hard to sell a box of washing powder for a tenner in Brasil when there's locally produced brands along side it that are a third of the price.
Cheers, thanks for the endorsement. You must have some great stories from your time at p&g!
Again just sub to your channel I really hope it takes off!
Cheers buddy! Thanks for the support
Wow what a fantastic video, nice work
Thank you very much!
thanks for the inside! great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Feather Popular safety razor is the way to go, if you want to save money in the long run. Refill blades are 10x cheaper, when compared to Gillette carts.
The quality of your videos is unbelievable I don't understand how you don't have more subscribers
Thanks, after 9 months of no subs and no views I've gotten 1900 subs in three weeks! So hopefully we are on the upswing!
Here comes the algorithm train!
Seriously, I'd compare this video quality to channels like practical engineering, hopefully that small subscriber count changes very quickly ;)
Thanks for the support!
Very nice ! Hope you continue =)
Your content is cleary qualitative there's maybe 3 or 4 channels in all my subscriptions I'm so enthousiastic about. Keep up your standards and subscribers will come :)
I know nothing about running a yt channel but maybe you could insist on intersting details for the title and visual like "diamond reinforced razor blade" instead of "1000 uses razor blade" which sounds kind of "meh"
Just a proposition though: your channel, your choices.
Have a nice day
Thanks, What a great comment. My main objective with this channel is to keep production levels as high as possible and keep improving on them wherever I can. In my next video (hopefully up by the end of the month) I will improve on the quality again. I also do not know much about running a YT channel but have already learnt so much. I was so close to calling the video something along the lines of, 'The world’s first diamond razor that lasts 1000 uses' but was concerned it could be seen as click bait. Something I never want to be accused of! I appreciate the feedback, and totally agree with it, videos live and die by their thumbnail and title. If I ever get to the point where I’m making channel t-shirts and hats you can have one for free!
@@BehindDesigns Haha thanks for the offer ! I I d'love to
Yeah click bait is hard to defend, but not necessarily a bad thing: as long as it's not followed by forgettable shit (and there's no smiley on the thumbnail ^^), works for me
But I've seen good click bait. Where it raises interest without raising alarm bells. Must be hard to master though... I can only imagine
Good luck finding a nice balance !
Agreeing with Laxby, I watched all of your videos before this one. Subconsciously, it seemed a trivial topic. In reality, I enjoyed it as much as all the others. ‘Targeted click bait’ is what I would recommend attempting. The title of this one triggers the ‘I’m being sold something’, by mentioning 1,000, etc. ‘The Diamond’ or ‘Tungsten Razor’ would have worked better in my entirely consumer based and personal opinion. But a minor issue. The content is quality, to the point I’ll be repeating certain facts to friends as if I’m smart 😏
A blade that lasts for 12 years? SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Great video and channel. I love your videos and how you explain things. Hope lots more people get to see it.
Thanks very much, they take a long time to make when working solo so I’m glad you’re enjoying them.
Spot on, El rip off🪒🪒🪒
Cheers!
Happy to say the only Gillette razor I’ve ever bought in my life was the first razor I bought. I was done with them forever after that. A $20 pair of electric hair clippers is what I use now. I could care less about a super smooth or close shave. It takes two minutes to shave every morning with the electric clippers and they last about 5 years before the blades go bad. #ThatLowMaintenanceLife
Same here, I used a wet razor about twice then went electric and couldn’t understand why anyone would use a wet razor! But as I get older I quite fancy going back, nice bit of quiet time in the morning!
Hate to get in the way of a good story but you can still buy 'tungsten coated' blades that are probably better than the origional alloy, I know becuse I got tired of buying overpriced gillette blades and bought a shavette with a pack of Derby extra blades that last ages (all off amazon). On the pack it says "chromium-ceramic platinum tungsten polymer coated edges" so if you wanna shave for next to nothing (at least in cost of blades) I'd reccomend it. Not trying to knock your video, it was still interesting and well put together I'm just skeptical when anyone says an amazing technology/invention was never used again because it failed in it's first iteration.
It didn’t fail though, that’s the point. Those tungsten 74 blades were so good that the company couldn’t sell enough in their day, so failed 🤷🏼♂️ The video mentions how startups like the one you found on Amazon are positioning themselves in the market, and how big name brands may be forced to innovate and follow..
Comercially failed, which yes for any business is pretty important. Not saying the design failed but do you seriously think that development of new corrosion resistant alloys hasn't advanced significantlly since?
One last thing, Derby have been making razors since 1940 according to google so I dont see how they're a "start up" stealing the idea of an everlasting razor. Llease make more sense if going to reply again.
Bro that 2nd graph is the funniest thing ever.
Very informative video. I’m glad I stumbled upon your channel, keep it up man.
Thanks! Glad you found the channel!
Yes
Nice video. I recently bought Schick’s diamond razor in NZ - works great and lasts very well, seems much better for my skin than Gillette fusion too. I looked into a couple of months ago and believe I saw Gillette owned the patent for diamond coated blades? It looked old and possibly recently expired, hence Schick etc. I see Gillette’s new ProGlide has a little diamond logo and claims lasts 3 years longer - so wonder if they are finally using their patented technology?
Damn i would love to give those personna 74s a try😁 nice informative video
I’m tempted to get some off e-bay… cheers for watching!
Only after reading the comments did I see the view and sub count.. Yeah super high quality videos!
Thanks, hopefully the channel will go through some rapid growth now YT is picking it up.
@@BehindDesigns Hope so, good luck! Looking forward to more videos!
Really cool content and absolutely smashing on the details. Really love how you explain things with simplicity
Take my sub!
Thank you! Glad you like the content.
The video isn't loud enough imo. Can't really hear even when volume on max
Thanks for the feedback that’s really helpful. I’ll make sure I knock it up a few points in the next one. Cheers for watching.
I think your just deaf 😂
amazing work
Cheers!
Loving your videos mate keep it up buddy
Glad you like them!
Great video! Just for future vids, your voice is a bit too quiet compared to your windscale video :)
Thanks, and cheers for the feedback, I’ve addressed the volume in the upcoming video!
your videos are amazing
Thank you!
Again, very good.
Thanks again!
The only way something like the Personna 74 could return would be if a nationalized company produced them at a break-even price.
Brilliant video, subscribed.
I quite quickly got fed up with massively overpriced razor cartridges and I went down the DE razor route a number of years ago. Decent blades cost as little as 3.5p each and I can get about a month out of them.
A diamond blade sounds awesome, but the price of entry would have to be vastly lower for me.
Cheers for the sub! Yes I think they would have to be aimed at the luxury market, heavily marketed using the word diamond as much as possible!
Same thing happened with the light bulb, there is a bulb that has been lit for over 100 years in some museum somewhere. Planned obsolescence is everywhere today. I have no problem with a company making a good profit margins but these big massive multinationals today really push the limit to excessive greed and extortion.
Great point, I had forgotten about that lightbulb, its on since 1901!
As you can probably tell i have just binge watch your entire content and have tried to comment and like all because one i think that helps with the algorithm and two they are all awesome. The tungsten blades just highlight one of the flaws with capitalism but it is the best system we have for now so we will have to put up with designed obsolescence. Maybe as we move towards a world where we have to produce less waste and be much more efficient in all that we do, not save the planet ( because it will still be here if we screw up and are gone ) but to save us from a planet that decides to recycle us. Awesome work i look forward to your next videos.
Cheers dude, I’m literally sat here just listening back to the the audio for my next video. Really appreciate all of the support. It is funny how every other industry is talking about sustainability and reducing landfill waste whilst you don’t hear a peep out of the disposable razor gang!
You can whittle a hair with a pocket knife, but you won’t be able to shave with it 1000 times. I’d love to see these blades brought to market.
12 years... wow
Indeed!
Try double-edged razors ... Problems solved. Use electric when you are in a rush if you have to.
Where do you get the diamond razor
All this research to be out done by the old fashion DE Razor
i have beard
❤
Want a blade that can last thousands of shaves? Get a straight razor and strop it with reasonable frequency.
jesus all this for a razor? what an "amazing" use of resources X,D
Gillette sold the shaver down the river. Vastly over priced and unsatisfying with poor results. Way to go guys.
Gillette is the reason I wear my beard with the pride of a straight white man!
