Henrique Barone said in one of his classes, "Timing is when it happens and Spacing is where it happens. Timing describes 'what' is happening and spacing describes 'how' it's happening." I'm slowing trying to find my way back into animation and I'm intimidated and excited at the same time. Its magical and that's why it's so terrifying. This helps A LOTTT. Nothing has to happen to move me to animate, I can just animate a line and call it a day. Thanks Alex!
This is incredible, any other animation introduction I’ve seen always goes straight into all the stuff like appeal and squash and stretch, I’m a person who likes to learn by getting in and toying around and it’s always just been overwhelming, but this seems way more manageable.
Other channels also inform about great ideas but what sets your channel apart is that it doesn't feel like a best random tips you never should know about video. It's more akin to a course which guides you in creating a mindset about animation. I hope you continue to make videos like this one. Maybe make one video about how crucial drawing is in clarifying your thoughts because without drawing you don't have an anchor. Many RUclipsrs say it's not necessary to learn how to draw. I feel like it's crucial if you want to free your mind and not reiterate needlessly.
These fundamentals like timing and spacing are the hardest to understand and practice for me and I usually forget the posing step. Your explaination and application methods are super useful for us beginners! You are awesome! I wish you the bestest of the bests!

That's cool. I heard it described that way at animation school but I tend to disagree. Spacing is the relationship between poses over time. Poses are like the molecules of animation and we need to arrange them in a meaningful way. They certainly aren't subservient to either spacing or timing. Removing the ambiguity of that was one of the reasons I wanted to start this channel actually.
@@AlexGriggAnimation I understand your point, but in any given set of drawings there are differences in spacing between, for example, body parts. It’s not unusual to see multiple spacing charts on any given key drawing: one for the torso, one for the arms, etc. Following those spacing charts leads to the breakdown and in between poses. That’s all I’m suggesting.

I've been always interested in animation, I've done some really simple short animations but I wasn't really sure if its good and I wanted to take it to the next level but I knew I wasn't ready because the knowledge was missing even though I watched many videos, or took animation courses they didn't give me what I really needed. The way they taught wasn't really good compared to what you're offering here. Thank you very much for your time and effort, I found you through Instagram and these videos really work for me. Thank you so much for breaking the process down in a way that's super easy to understand. I'm still very new to animation and already overwhelmed with the complex tips flying everywhere. This video was a breath of fresh air. I have a question, though. Seeing as you said we shouldn't fuss about spacing until we've sorted out the pose and timing, is it a good idea to animate a scene every several frames (like every five or more frames) and then adjust the spacing as necessary when we're done sorting out the pose and timing? For my first animation (a ball bouncing in several arcs before coming to rest), I animated on 1s and didn't make the most of the ball's momentum. Couldn't figure out how to add new frames in-between others on Blender, so I thought, perhaps, it's wiser to leave many frames in-between keyframes in the beginning and then resize later. Is this practical? If it isn't, could you please suggest a better solution? Many thanks.
The eternal question! It will depend on what you're animating but different approaches can work, I have a video called "should you plan your animation?" That talks about the advantages of both ways. I also have a video called how to keyframes like a pro, which gives a bit of a method for approaching the planing stage (sometimes called Blocking). Hope that's helpful:)
