APTV correspondent Gunz recently got an audience with Dustin Kensrue, guitarist/frontman for post-hardcore conceptualists Thrice. The relatively quiet Kensrue was in NYC during the tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of the band’s high watermark album Vheissu.
From their earliest recordings to the massive gesture that was 2018’s Palms, Thrice has never made any half-measures. Often tagged as “post-hardcore,” they’ve been able to transcend all boundaries, from both within and from fans and critics alike. You could use the shorthand of “Warped Tour Radiohead” to describe their career, but you’d be glossing over the details. Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge and his brother, drummer Ryan Breckenridge have expanded their vision with each succeeding record. The turning point of that journey was definitely their 2005 release Vheissu. The band incorporated more electronic textures to their heavier sound, creating the kind of atmospheres that made many of their fans pause to consider.
Here Kensrue and Gunz discuss everything from the first chord he’d play automatically if someone handed him a guitar to the band that Kensrue would go see play their classic records in their entirety. Talk also turns to the mission of his Carry The Fire podcast; and Gunz reminiscing on the first time he saw the band, opening for Midtown and Face To Face. Another point of interest being Kensrue’s conflict between wishing to celebrate this grand chapter in his band's career, but being wary of having it perceived as a “cash-grab.”

I feel like in order to communicate with this guy, you gotta keep it chill and be intelligent with how you word your questions

This was a terrible interview. The questions were leading, not relevant to any current efforts/albums, and it's apparent the questions didn't land with Dustin at all in terms of remotely interesting.

This, by far, was the worst interview I’ve ever witnessed. We all make mistakes in life, but this was a train wreck. Learn to ask relevant questions. Listen to the subjects response and know where you’re going in the conversation; have bullet points. Lower your energy level and learn to match the person you’re dealing with. 1/3rd of the conversation was his sickness. No one came here for that. We all love Vheissu and came for that information to hear what Dustin had to say. Hahaha we’ll never know.

I feel bad for Dustin, I get the interviewer is trying to be energetic and lively but at a point you have to feel out how your guest is and play to that. Also film your own follow me and my name is shit separately and not do it in front of your guest, you’re there to talk to him, not to hype up your own stuff. Also also, have two mics.
