  • They must have done a bunch of studies at Lake Fork and it seems putting fish in a livewell will kill them. Not all fish, just the ones between 16 and 24 inches. It also seems that there is no other lake that has this problem just Lake Fork. BEWARE!!!!

    MY PROFILE:
    I started fishing when I was just a young kid and instantly fell in love with Bass Fishing. Started fishing tournaments when I was in high school and have been fishing them ever since. For years I fished every tournament I could enter sometimes fishing as many as 45 tournaments a year. I qualified for the Elites when I was 30 but didn't have the sponsors or money to compete so I turned it down. Got sponsor support later and fished the FLW Tour for 2 years and having been fishing the Toyotas since 2006. I’ve won 5 Angler of the Year Titles becoming the only fishermen to have more than 3 AOYs in the Toyota series. Won numerous events along the way that has helped shape my way into working for Strike King as head of product innovation. Along the way, I picked up a camera and started filming my endeavors. I have now fallen in love with making videos about fishing and delivering it to you. Follow along the journey...it should be an honest and fun ride!

    I agree Todd. A lot of people with a pierce of paper that think they are smarter than the ones without, have screwed up a lot of things. Sometimes common sense trumps that piece of paper. Great insight from someone who more than likely has more hours actually seeing and experiencing actual fish behavior and lake conditions, rather than someone that read it in a book. 👍🏼

    Reminds me of Tx rack size limits on white tail deer in pretty much every county. If we can only shoot the bucks with big racks and must let all the giant deer with basket racks walk on by, it makes no sense. All those basket rack deer breed and pass on the same basket rack genes. If they wanted Texas to have a large number of big rack bucks, we should be culling out the basket racks, not letting them breed like crazy and live a full natural life. I have asked multiple game wardens about it. None had an answer.

    I live and fish on Fork everyday and taking my clients out crappie fishing it never fails that someone catches a big bass. Instantly they want to put it the box and go to the minnow Bucket marina and weigh it and measure it. I never let them handle the big bass to much and out of all the big bass I've had in my boat probably 3 were big enough to take to the bank.

    Here in Az we had a slot on one of our main tournament lakes for years. The 1.75-2 pound fish were in abundance. Thirty years later and the water level of the same lake has been between 105% to 85% and brush being as deep as 35ft. The lake is exploding with larger fish now and it takes mis 20's to win a one day. The key is cover be it think brush or vegetation and water fertility to better fishing in a lake.

  • @MrJNOTHUM
    @MrJNOTHUM 19 дней назад +1

    the answer is stocking regularity results in big fish. follow the stocking reports and you can see where the "big bass" factory will be next. there's a direct correlation to the frequency of stocking and big bass caught. Lake Fork gets special treatment and is stocked in a STUPID way. The slot is not growing them, the sheer number of fish put in that lake is what's driving that.

    Fork is my fun fishing so that is the only reason I like slot cause if there was no slot Fork would get hammered worse than already does. There are coves in Rayburn and Toledo bigger than fork, however I agree the slot has not made a difference in giants lately but they killed the grass which used to be all over the lake screwed it up! There are lots of guides on that lake and if there were rayburn size tournaments every weekend that would kill there business. You are right I sometimes like slot on smaller lakes just for fun fishing as my tournament days are behind me.

    So strange to hear it’s like that in Texas with all the state investment! Here in SC our lakes have been ruined by Spotted bass & Herring.
    However- if you add Herring and take away spotted bass you get Lake Murray.
    Regardless we also have hundreds of tournaments a year on Murray, Heartwell, Santee, Russell & Keowee. When the best lake is Jocasse with 8+lb smallmouth, 8+lb spots & 10+ largemouth. It’s just a deep water fishery.

    Sometimes I think cattle farmers would make better fisheries managers than biologists. Most anglers don't understand "carrying capacity". They sure don't understand "slot" limits. Slot limits are very similar to antler restrictions on whitetail. Counter-intuitive imo.

    Totally agreed. I have a very hard time believing a slot limit rule on tournaments makes a big difference for overall lake quality. Maybe for the catch and keep crowd, but not tournaments.
    Honestly, with the slot limit at Fork I truly don't understand why it is still a popular tournament lake. It sucks fishing to align with regulations rather than trying to catch your biggest 5.
    Why wouldn't they try a few years with regular limits during permitted tournaments and see if it makes any kind of difference?

    Todd, it sounds like you all need to get together and plant a bunch of trees. Because apparently there are not enough in Texas to hug.. Here in East TN I believe that the biggest issue to bass population and growth is the constant spraying of grass, the fact that TVA will raise the lakes in the spring then drop the bottom out of them as the bass move into spawn and idiots that will catch more than their limit and non-legal fish. But that is just my thoughts as I am not a biologist.

    • @djrener1
      @djrener1 19 дней назад

      @@toddcastledinefishing5924 it's almost like the timing of the explosion of the development at Fork coincides with the decline in fishing. There is less than 1/2 of the undeveloped shoreline there was back in the day. Plus lake got old, dairy farms used to provide nutrients in run off and they are all but gone.
      The slot should have went away a long time ago, I do not think its the end all to be all or the reason that Fork has some decent fishing. It's now a trophy crappie lake.

    We had a lake that we would occasionally put on our club schedule back in the 90's that was considered a bass management lake. It had a 15" limit as apposed to 12" that was the norm for the majority of lakes/ponds in the Northeast... Place ended up having a great population of fish up to 14 7/8"....🤣🤣
    We stopped going there because everyone would catch a bunch of fish but maybe 5 out of 15-20 boats would have fish to weigh in....SMH...
    Catch and Release!!! Skip the GREASE!
    Vegetation...structure....water levels...forage...fish care are far more important than size and slot limits...

    This is funny but kinda silly… it definitely helps to release the fish that we know has the genetics to make more giants. That’s one of my complaints about about slots in general. Do fish stop reproducing after they grow out of the slot? Are we trying to just grow them to 3 pounds? The overs are the ones I want most protected. Another thing… Certain times of the year we know mortality is higher. So we probably shouldn’t put them in the live well then. Other times it doesn’t matter so much at. Instead of focusing efforts on those times, we create year long slots? You can hurt a good lake. We’ve all see it happen. But you’re right.. some of the these claims don’t make much sense. Fork’s slot seems too aggressive. Immediately release giants during the spawn, don’t yank them out of deep water and put them in the live well in the hottest part of the year, and clean your live wells… if those things weren’t let becomes basically bacteria farms, then delayed mortality wouldn’t be such a concern either. But it’s all about the slot? Just promoting those kinds of common sense things would probably do more for our fisheries than heavy handed slot limits ever could, but it is what it is. You have die hard believers in slots no matter what.

    Most lakes cycle. For a few years mother nature makes the lake a good temp, the right height, have good spawns. Which equates to awesome fishing 2-3 years later. Produces monsters and lots of them. Then bad years happen and it changes for the worst. Let nature do her thing and keep human hands out of it. Nature doesn't put chemicals in to kill things. We do that because we think we know better. Leave things alone

    Why not do like Oklahoma when you are just out fun fishing or catching a few eaters you can only be in possession of 1 fish over 16”. For tournaments you have to a tournament exception permit from the state saying you have permission to have more than 1 fish over 16 and the state is encouraging keeping 12-13 inchers and I do that almost every time I go out my father in law loves fried fish and I enjoy catching them and our lakes are getting better

    You are comparing fork to Sam Rayburn, fork is 27,000, Rayburn is 114,000 acre. Fork is one third the size and gets all that pressure. Plus SRA killed all the grass.

      Exactly my point, killing the grass has an impact 100x greater than the slot. Most lakes suffer from much larger things than tournaments or slots or fishermen. Yet other fishermen always want to blame fishermen as to why lakes aren’t good. Fishermen are rarely the reason

    I've always hated the slot limits at lakes. Glad most of the lakes I fish have done away with them.

    Have you talked to anyone who can actually do something or just bitching on RUclips? If you actually talk to the people who make these decisions you might understand why.

    I love it when you get condescending. I know why you're doing it. Logic is Logic. Some people just won't see anything else than they're opinions. They look at things with blinders on. They almost sound like bidenomics lol

    Here's my problem with your thinking Todd. You're just making wayyyy too much sense. Don't you know that you're not allowed to make sense anymore. Dude, get with the program!😁

      Well I am 3 year sober recovering alcoholic so your comment doesnt apply. I guess if being a non man card holding karen requires you to make a negative comment on mine when it was clear of it being my opinion makes your day better then by all means have a great day.
