THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this video!!! What a find!!! I'm the small 13 yo kid on the bike at the 50:23 mark. My 14 yo friend is the bigger kid on the other bike at the 320th and Pacific Hwy intersection near the Seatac Mall. The 82-83 school year is when we first met at Sacajawea Middle School. Almost 40 years later, we are still best friends and see each other nearly every day.
Federal Way was heaven for kids in the 80's. Had 3 movie theaters, Toys R Us, Bullwinkles, Chuck E Cheese, Pattison's West, and the original Tilt arcade outside of Seatac Mall.
I grew up in the 60s and 70's in Federal way. We had the Federal Way Skate center. It was cool old castle like building. I was on the Speed club we would go all over the state to race. It was located around where best buy is now. I was a dishwasher at Diamond Jim's for years as a teen.
How wonderful this is to take a step back in time and see all the old familar places, the cars etc.. I was 16 at the time of this recording and i want so badly for that car to turn down Dash point road and go to my childhood home so i could burst through that door and tell everyone how much i love them. From the bottom of my heart i thank you for posting this precious piece of history, it certainly brought a lot of tears to my eyes.💗
Same here …. I grew up in the federal way area from 1983-2004. Went to Sacajawea and graduated at FWHS in 1990. Recently found these Hwy 99 clips and can’t get enough of them. So glad but also bittersweet as nothing remains the same. 😢
Awesome trip down memory lane. 23 years old at the time. Just got married.1st kid. Got a job working for the FAA stationed in Vancouver wa. But lived up here in a town house. In younger years I've worked at the Red lion, country kitchen,Hilton, Holiday Inn,Vips restaurant, Furney's nursery, black angus( Burien) manager wanted me to help open the new one in Fed.way. said no. Probably would have ran it by now. Oh well. Used to sell junk at the Midway drive in and took a beautiful girl to see " Back to the Future " in 85. Helped out a little at Marys Cafe and fished a bit at Angle lake. A little work at the Hyatt. And with the FAA, did alot of work at SeaTac. Even lived at a run down Blue Haven motel for a very short time. Basically lived with the rats! Lots of memories, and a little trouble too.LOL...
This video was taken on my 15th birthday! I live near federal way and still do today. Sad to see all the places that are not there anymore and amazed to see all the ones that are still there but they still managed to change. Nice trip down memory lane thanks 😊
I’ve grown up in Kent/federal way my whole life although I haven’t been here as long as when this video was made it’s crazy to see how much has changed. I can manage to catch glimpses of areas and streets that look familiar and it makes me so happy that this video has captured this much history
I lived there during this time in Woodmont and was about to start 8th grade at Sacajawea. Seeing that old-school Taco Bell, the Stardust Motel, Friggin' ETTL Bingo! That stuff is legendary. The old Tradewell before it became Book World. Just wish the video was better quality. I've been trying to remember the name of that drive-in burger place, southbound 99 just before the Kent-Des Moines road cross on the right, but just can't make out anything but the large red DRIVE-IN part of it. The one just after BK's Kitchen. If anyone remembers, please share. I remember going to Pleasant Garden's Chinese restaurant on 260th and 99 for that epic Jasmine Family Dinner. I Miss those days so bad. Thanks for sharing the memories!
@@highwayvideos3434 Just got back to seeing this, thanks! BTW, at the 50:20 mark was something that blew me and my buddy away. Those two kids on the bikes were us. We still can't believe it. We often went to that Chuck E. Cheese, and the old 'Hobby Headquarters' store in Sea-Tac Mall. It was insane when I showed him this video, having not noticed it the first time and his jaw dropped and pointed at the monitor. Crazy world!
How amazing …. I went to Woodmont Elementary in 85 then moved on to Sacajawea and FWHS class of 90! I even dated a girl at Pleasant Gardens on 260th Haha. Small world ! 😊
I’m 12 and I live in federal way. I’ve always wondered what Federal Way and De Moines looked like back in the 80s, and this video answered all of my questions. My dad worked in De Moines back in the 80s.
Yes!! I remember being often at the SeaTac area 172 and 340 bus stops as a young lady and having been slow drive-by leering by a very memorable lecherous man in an old truck. He screamed the look of "pedophile" and "stranger danger", I hated waiting for/ talking the bus alone just for that reason. Grew up on same street as his parents' home, friends of ours rented the infamous house near 216th/Military before knowing about what it was all about. All of that freaking gives me the worst icky feeling.
So cool seeing this! I grew up in between Des Moines and Burien in the 80’s. The Midway Drive In was such a big part of my summers growing up! My parents loved going to the swap meet there every weekend. The last movie I saw there was Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
This is so cool! Moved to Federal Way in '81, and still live here today! It's really cool to see what has changed, and, what hasn't. Thanx for sharing.
The changes have been BIG, bro. I moved here back in Feb, 1998 from L.A and never looked back, however, it is sad to see how many homeless people live around the area, I live right down 333rd and the amount of crime going on on that corner it"s sickening.
Thank you for the video. I am thirty years old, and South KING COUNTY WA is where I grew up and where my parents met. My dad drives a f- 150 FORD TRUCK and to me this video reminds me of Home Sweet Home!!!!!!!!!!!! 😻😍😘🥰
If they drove the speed limit the video would have been cut in half. Angle lake swap meet, South China Doll, Bullpen tavern and so many other places that are long gone. I noticed a lot of the motels that are no longer there. This was also the time the Green River killer was active along the Tukwila portion of Pac highway.
I can recognize the roads and the patterns they go along with what is there today. Like where the commons mall is now. Wow it used to be really different. Pretty cool to go back in time, since I’m 25
I was born in 99 and I don’t really recognize a lot of what I saw in the video and I’ve lived in Fed all my life. Interesting to see how much things changed.. thanks for sharing!
Fascinating. If the driver were to have hung a right S 216th, then a right on Military Rd, and another right S 220th, you would find the home of The Green River at 21859 32nd Place. He and his family lived there from the late 70s to the early ninties.
This is cool. I was just about to turn 3 at this time. I was born and raised in Seattle so this area wasn't familiar to me at that time. I miss the 80s. Best decade ever.

I’m almost 20, I was born in Kenya but came to Federal Way back in 2008 when I was six, ever since I’ve lived nearby and I recognize a lot of the places. Good old Federal Way known for its dipping and diving streets
The way International Blvd/SR 99 looks in the 2010s/20s is significantly different than in the early 1980s. Almost no sidewalks back then vs sidewalks and streetscaping now. Some businesses from the 83 video are still in existence. I stayed in the SeaTac area, motel 6 back in 2012 which seemed to have been yellow in 1983, but in the current era Blue. Also its weird not seeing the light rail lol. When you cross 405/518 in 1983 there was no LINK light rail/Tukwila Station. My walk across the freeway bridge looked similar but Intl Blvd is much more ped friendly than it was in the 1980s. I last stayed in Seattle in 2012, and its changed significantly even since then im sure
I nearly flipped out when I found out where this starts. This is home for me and so much of it is unrecognizable. The McDonalds just north of 516 is still there, but the Taco Bell next to it closed down around 2011. 7-11 at 216th is closed, too. It's weird to see how different side streets and pavement markings used to look. And those old bus stops! Wow
Hello fellow Southend native! They reopened the 216th 7-11 recently but the one on 516 below Walgreens is shuttered and the one up on 260th next to Viva Mexico is also still shuttered. Mystery as of why, both fully stocked and everything. Anyhow, imagine when the 509 extension and light rail is completed how vastly different this will be! I visited SeaTac briefly via the LINK light rail back in 2012 and yes i faintly remember that McDonalds directly north of the Tukwila Station! The freeway bridge looks familiar and i noted that the Motel 6 i stayed seemed to be painted yellow back in 1983. The fact im mentioning light rail shows how much change has happened since the 1980s and im sure there have been changes just since 2012. The light rail ended at the Airport back then, now its going to Federal Way! But in ‘83 rapid transit in the Seattle area mustve seemed like a far off fantasy! Crossing the freeway in 1983, absolutely no light rail viaduct or station
The camera lens appears to be zoomed in quite a bit which makes it appear to be traveling quite a bit slower than it actually is. You can see how fast the cars are really going by at the intersections.
The movies at the Midway Drive- In on this June day in 1983 were "Chained Heat" and "Vice Squad". I never saw those, but I do remember seeing "Bad News Bears" there as a kid sometime in the 70s (76-77)with my parents in their white plymouth station wagon. You'd think that COVID would make Drive-Ins more popular now due to the social distancing requirements and limiting large groups of people being able to congregate in one place.
Unfortunately I do not. The Washington State Archives have posted a few on their Facebook page. At some point they are hoping to get more of these online, but it requires a lot of time/resources.
Although I remember filling up my tank with .99 cent/gallon gas in federal way, seeing $1.08/gallon gas still brings back memories. Trip down memory lane. I also see lots of classic cars for dirt cheap! Could have gotten a Chevelle or GTO for like $1500 in '83. Good ones today are north of $30k.
This video MUST start at either South 333rd St or 332nd Street going northbound and there must've been a 4-way intersection there at the time which is no longer. I've looked up an old map and was astonished to see that the southern portion of Celebration Park along the parking lot and soccer fields was once a very small airport runway.
I lived on star lake road also in around 1981 to 1983. Had a buddy that lived at his moms house on the west corner Jerry. His mom owned the at whole corner and made bank on the sale to a developer that is now an apartment complex and some businesses.
The beginning of the video is NOT Tukwila the very beginning of the video is Federal Way going north on 99 the SeaTac Mall is on the right side as a cross 320th
That's crazy I was just a baby when this was filmed. I'm actually right in this area as I type this. I remember 1980s Federal Way I used to love going to Toys R Us and also I remember my younger brother having his birthday party at the McDonald's on 320th they had a caboose and we had a birthday party there and they had the Hamburglar and Grimace show up. There was also this place called Bullwinkle's with these animatronic guys
Actually unrecognizable... I keep going from Des Moines time stamp and Federal way. Cant make out what looks like what. Edit: 13:06 WOA WTF THIS IS WHERE THE DES MOINES SIGN IS RIGHT? UNBELIEVABLE THERE ARE SO MANY TREES
I was taking home $600 a week driving a cab in the Seattle area at this time. A lot of people don't make that much today and the prices are 10x higher. $1.02 for a pack of Marlboros? $10-12 now. How I miss those days.

Film starts out following behind a chevy nova just like i had in the 70's.
So awesome. Lived in federal way most of my life down at star lake road to 312th. I'm in milton now.
I lived on star lake road also in around 1981 to 1983. Had a buddy that lived at his moms house on the west corner Jerry. His mom owned the at whole corner and made bank on the sale to a developer that is now an apartment complex and some businesses.
James. Do you remember the Tank Tracks?
Is pacific highway 288 th. 272nd etc.
$10-12 now. How I miss those days.
should do a side by side comparison now vs then.
People drove like assholes then. Gotta get around everyone to sit at the same red light. 😆
The Bullpen! That's where I use to pick up my Peruvian flake! Good times! 👍
Hard to remember some of those days.lol...
wait... people do the speed limit??? i thought it was just a suggested speed.... who knew...
Video looks slowed down. These people are driving like nut jobs compared to today.
Blast from the past!
My dealer lived behind the Bullpen. Ironic how there's a jail there where his house used to be. Lol.
Yep even us gex's forget what use to look like 👍
Damn! I knew I recognized the road he was on😂😂
Damn Tuk was lookin way different
yay no red light cameras
7:03 Chevrolet el camino 1973
33:16 Chevrolet Camaro 1981
looking at some of these prices makes me sad haha
But if you think about it. Most people were only making between 5 and 10 an hour. Now most are making 15 to 40 or more in salary. So...
11:14

Too bad someone stretched this to fit modern format. All the shapes are distorted.
Agreed. I believe RUclips is responsible as the original file that was uploaded is at a smaller resolution and was stretched to fit RUclips's format.
Do federal way
