    I use one of those for my sharpening rig. Thanks for educating us all in the ways of sharpening Jake. I always appreciate watching your videos and you taking the time. This is the golden age of information - we just need to know how to access it all!

      You bet! Sadly RUclips is telling creators to stop making information type videos and focus on entertainment in order to make money but I won't change, my role is to help people to lean more about knives and everything related even if that means I won't make money from RUclips.

    At least it's a cheap accessory for a sharpening system. Thanks for sharing Jake!

      Right, and it works with almost every guided sharpening system, very useful.

    Tough finding flat spot on my worksharp adjust, I just kinda balance it on the guide rod and hope i'm holding it as straight as possible before I read what angle it's at. Should I do that while the stone is resting on knife or before knife gets clamped in?

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  10 месяцев назад

      I would probably zero it on the table surface that the WSPA is sitting on. The WSPA is quite flexible so you won't get a super accurate reading anyway but it's better than relying on the numbers on the WSPA. I hope that helps.

  • @skaterXYZ
    @skaterXYZ Год назад

    Just wondering, what is the point of zero'ing the gauge before checking angles? I'd think that as long as the sharpener isn't changing positions around the table it shouldn't matter if you zero first or not. I'm using a worksharp precision adjust and it doesn't really have a good spot to zero it from.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  Год назад

      That's a practical question.
      My sharpener is on a small stand that has a very narrow footprint and it sits in my utility room in my basement on an uneven floor. That stand does move around quite a lot.
      If your setup is stable then don't concern yourself with zeroing it out every time. Or, if you are not concerned with high precision (which simply cannot be achieved on a Work Sharp Precision Adjust anyway) then it wouldn't be necessary to zero it out. The "precision" part of the name is a blatant falsehood, after all.
      Still, I would zero it out occasionally just because I am not 100% confident in any digital angle finder keeping an accurate angle indefinitely.

    • @skaterXYZ
      @skaterXYZ Год назад

      @@CanadianCuttingEdge thanks for the response. The precision adjust seems to work pretty well so far for my needs, but I'm going to start using the digital angle finder to be as precise as possible and match angles when switching between my venev stones and the stock ones/ ceramic

    I would put it on the knife blade and zero the gauge to find the true angle of the blade and then set your grind angle.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  4 месяца назад +1

      That could work, if you have a large enough flat shoulder on the blade, like on a knife with a scandi grind.
      I don't measure off the main bevel of the blade because that is already an angled part of the knife. Further, many knives have convex or concave (hollow) main bevels which further mess up the angle. Not to mention that if your knife has Distal taper and/or Proximal taper your angle may vary along the length of the blade.
      Finally, if you measure off the main bevel of the blade then you are measuring an angle that is not the industry standard starting point. You will get a repeatable angle, but your 20° angle will actually be over 20° compared with using the standard method; how much over will vary from knife to knife because they don't all have the same main bevel angle.

    • @realMartinHamilton
      @realMartinHamilton 4 месяца назад

      Yes I see what you're saying about the taper of the blade. I should have made myself more clear and am referring to the bolster of the knife blade. But then not all knives have a flat one. Thanks for the detailed reply. I could always find a knife with a flat bolster, clamp it in, and see if there is any difference between the flat spot on the sharpening device and the clamped in knife zero degree angled bolster. After that then figure in any differences. @@CanadianCuttingEdge

    I don't understand how you're finding the angle of the knife. Won't you only be finding the angle of the position of the stone?

    Is there an ideal standard angle for all knives or does it depend on the knife itself?

    • @nino71
      @nino71 Год назад

      depends on the blade geometry and the use of the blade, Average pocket knife is 20°, fillet knifes less (18°), bushcraft knifes more

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  Год назад

      No, there is no ideal angle.
      Way too many variables. I used to go with 20° for many years but in the last 10 or 15 years metalurgy has gotten a LOT better and even most budget knives do fine at 18° for most purposes, but there are some purposes that you want a higher angle and others that you want an even lower angle. I have some very nice kitchen knives that I sharpen at 14° per side.
      Nutshell: The better the steel the lower the angle it can handle and still perform well and keep a good edge for a while. VS The harder the case use of a knife the greater the angle it needs to have for the edge to be durable. VS the geometry of the blade.
      The balance of those 3 main things are what I use to help me decide what angle I want to sharpen a knife too.
      (Hard use may be something like using a knife as a chopper for as a froe - to baton wood, etc)

    If your gauge isn't any better than your spelling, I will stick with my Klein 935DAG angle gauge.
    Guage is incorrect; you can use GAGE, and it will pass muster, but the correct spelling is GAUGE

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  Месяц назад

      My spelling is terrible, always has been, but that doesn't have anything to do with how the gauge works; but that doesn't matter, I wasn't trying to promote this specific gauge as much as I was promoting the use of one for said task.
