I was just about to comment about this!.. I think what's great about both Robocop and Starship troopers is that even if you don't understand that it's satire they still work quite well as action entertainment. They are quite a bit better when you consider the satire and social commentary though. :)
Yeah I think they dont get the satire cos they aren't from our era this is my favourite film so much and the comments about his family are stupid cos its the reason I hated the remake. He protects his family cos he dont want them to remember him as a robot
Oh no, giving Robocop a 'meh'. I don't mind the rankings thing, I don't rank movies myself or pay attention to review grades, but if were to, of course, Robocop is a 10/10 no question. Every aspect of it works perfectly to achieve what it wants to do. It's a satire, both of policing, corporate culture, violence and so on, but on top of that, it's simultaneously a satire of movies about those same areas. And it's hilarious.
I remember when, at the end, Robocop replied, “Murphy”, and the screen went black/to credits - the entire movie theater erupted in cheers/applause. I miss the 80s.
Robocop was ahead of its time regarding its vision of privatized police organisations and mega corporations. It a fantastic satire and a superb action film. Starship Troopers is superb satire as well, and a kick-ass action film at the same time.
'ROBOCOP' is the most entertaining 80's satire - intelligent, dark, violent, hilarious, with a huge dollop of pathos-driven drama - one of THE best films of the 80's
A lot of people think that Robocop is one of the greatest action movies of all time it’s considered a classic masterpiece by a lot of movie critics and people
Robocop is as close to a 10/10 that I get. Watching your reaction gave me a lot of points to discuss in my eventual video analysis of Robocop. Thanks guys, good watch.
Less than a 7?! Honestly, I am shook. I think if you had seen it back in the day you would have seen how groundbreaking it was. It’s a brutal film with effects that are very well executed. I don’t think you would get away with blowing a man apart these days in “blockbuster” The score is epic!
This movie is waaaay deeper than you think. And it's kinda scary how accurate some of the predictions are. Private companies taking over government institutions like the police. The complete rot of Detroit. Militarization of the police department (they didn't look like that in the 80's but the do today). There are some great analysis videos on this film available on YT. The director actually literally threw the script away when he first got it, until his wife fished it out, read it and told him that it was more than just a hyper violent film. I love it.
I think you guys missed the point and underlying message of the movie. Its making fun of corporate greed and 80's over the top excess. Although the movie was played serious, its satire. There was a fine line between serious and ridiculous and I think Robocop straddled it just enough to be considered great.
It's a satire. It's a masterpiece. The score is iconic. Context is important. It's not about nostalgia. It's about the human soul in the machine. It's about the prime directives. But alas I understand why you missed the point, you were more interested in finding the joke and you were blind to the tragedy of it all.
Very good, Teresa. I feel the same way about Robocop. I think the boys missed the point (satire) by a mile. It's not a mindless actionmovie at all. It has depth.
What I most liked about this film was the social commentary (commercialism, corporate greed, the callous nature of money over human life, etc.), and the tongue-in-cheek humor (especially the commercials and over the top violence). 😁
when you said he should have a line or catch phrase, your friend sneezed and he literally said his catch phrase "dead or alive you're coming with me" at that exact moment and you missed it lol. That's how the bad dude at the gas station recognized him. Cuz he said that to him when he was human.
There was supposed to be a dedication of a RoboCop statue in downtown Detroit this summer, but COVID shut down the plans. But sooner or later, we will have our hero immortalized in bronze!
I think it's important to judge a film partially by the context of its era- and this film was not just ahead of its time effects-wise, it's also a brilliant satire of the excesses of the 80s. Verhoeven films are notorious for their social commentary and satire.
This is the theatrical cut. There's an extended "gorier" version.. only adds a few seconds really take the violence to another level. What you guys are calling "Cheese" is just intentional satire. The original cut kinda drives that hope by ramping up the gore to impossible levels.
Yea, that’s fair, 6.8 for a masterpiece. Makes sense. People say it’s silly and not deep but that’s completely false. It’s incredibly clever and has depth about regaining humanity against the threat of corporate takeover including the essence of the human soul. Robocop is about him fighting for humanity’s salvation against the mega corporate mechanization and its mindless propaganda.
It's absolutely intended as satire on the culture of the 80s, but its extremes end up becoming reality. It also has an elegant structure called a chiasmus, where the second half mirrors the first half like a palindrome.
I think you guys were way too harsh for this one. I feel the satire was lost. The fact how anti-cliche it is his family has already moved on, he never actually beats his programming the only reason he can kill the last guy is cause he got fired, the evil company is still in charge of EVERYTHING. It's so good
Guys you missed everything. The biblical references walking on water, iron through the hands, kids “Let the little children come to me”, the spear Clarence push through his side, death, resurrection. Also the value of human life, the soul in the machine, anarchocapitalsm, gentrification, and no counting the stuff this movie predicted 20 years before it existed. This movie is a symbol by itself, there is even RoboCop a statue on Detroit as there with Rocky. Finally it seems you didn’t watched the uncut unrated version (director’s cut). Smh
I honestly don't think these guys are that deep to delve into the context of the film in order to appreciate its themes and nuances, hence the mind numbing score. Can't wait for them to review Aliens and give it a below average 4.6 lol
Yeah, this is one of the few times I feel you guys have missed the forest for the trees. I think you went in with certain (low) expectations, and that may have prevented you from viewing it maybe more...holistically? You've definitely got to check out more Verhoeven to see what he's really all about...Edited to Add - This is really a "Reagan-era" 80's movie...and a lot of the satire probably went over your heads for that reason...
y'all are like, "he should have a catch phrase!" and then the sneeze covers up the very thing y'all are saying he should have, "Dead or alive, you are coming with me." LMAO
I cannot wait for your Starship Troopers and Total Recall reactions, great films!! Also please consider ‘They Live’, it’s a brilliant film that was beyond its time! 😁
It’s a satire so intentionally OTT. Terminator was a simple (yet enjoyable) B-Movie, this on the other hand was a genuine attempt to offer critique of, amongst other targets, militarised policing and growth of the private sector in domestic security.
I think they kinda missed the satirical elements of the movie and how it makes everything totally exaggerated and over the top on purpose to make fun of corporate greed and excess.
Fun fact. Whenever Robocop is in a car, he's in his underwear. They couldn't fit the bottom half of the costume in the car so he's driving around top half only, and in his boxers.
The tone and the funny looking robot movements were intentional, the director really leant into how ridiculous it would be to have a robot cop in this twisted satire of corporate America
I watched this as a kid and back then I was horrified by Murphy's death and the toxic waste scene. Now the most horrifying scene for me rewatching it having grown up is the scene of ED209 shooting the boardroom member. Not the shooting itself but how casually everyone started talking like it was an annoying financial setback not even acknowledging that someone has just died in front of them. Their complete lack of concern human life whilst focusing on business is terrifying. Looks very prescient now. The Nuclear board game was even more hilarious as a grown up despite nuclear armagedden looming on the horizon!
Aw c'mon, guys. You laughed your ass off with big delighted grins on your faces all the way through this movie. I saw genuine joy coming off you and you know you'll be quoting this movie. A flick that did that with a small budget even by 1980s standards deserves at least a 7.9
@John Frum Man i've been born in the different country, way past 80's, and understood this movie. The film operating on basis that can be understood no matter time. So yeah, major L.
No, we don't love it for nostalgia. & not knowing the director or what was going on at the time adds to the film, but it's not dependent on it. It's a fun, classic quality action sci-fi for adults that they just don't make anymore. Listening to your commentaries on this channel (which are great and welcome) it really seems like you walk into this actions genre with more preconceived negative notions of the 80's than the time periods of the previous genres you've watched (in which you've been way more forgiving) . It's the 80's = cheesey. The concepts are cheesey. That's cheesey. The most successful film of all time today is about a rich gun in an iron suit, the Norse god of thunder, and a frozen WWII vet teaming up with a tree and racoon to fight a purple alien, but THIS is cheesey? We've stuck with you guys even when you went into the foreign films, but now it seems you're painting all these films with a "cheesey" brush that each movie has to fight and overcome and your ratings are really out of whack.
I agree, and they(especially Shaun) are not giving the film enough attention. Like he already decided he will not like it because of the title or something like that.
Just see it as a social satire on the American police and large industrial corporations (backed up by the government). Also Paul Verhoeven's 'Starship Troopers' has the same kind of approach, which was at the time of its release (saw them actually both in the cinema, in 1987 and 1997) highly misunderstood. Plus 'Robocop' and 'Starship Troopers' are even more relevant than ever in todays American society, especially the latter.
LoL, I had my Aunt take me to see this opening week at the theatre as payment for painting her garage when I was 14. It was a silent ride home. She only said, "So that's the kind of movie you like?" I still laugh about it till this day.
The natural chemistry between the Bodicker Gang was created through a pretty clever trick from Verhoeven; he made sure the actors portraying the gang had a light schedule the first three weeks and every day at the end of their last scene he'd give a different one of them a few hundred dollars and tell him to take the boys out drinking. This also means that the Bodicker Gang did briefly hit up the bars in town in 1986 during shooting of this film.
I think part of the reason you missed all the social commentary going on in the film is that you spent the film chatting/joking to eachother about the surface level stuff minute-by-minute. Which is sort of the point of these reaction videos I know, but I think it can stop a watcher really putting all their mind into interpreting what's happening (and why). I've noticed the same thing on several RUclips reaction channels.
Yep, when some reactors with Ron over stuff and then make sweeping stamens about what they've just watched it annoyed the hell outta me. So many channels use what they're watching as a jumping off point for there own stupid point scoring and not analysing what they're just watched.
@@Sisterspike1 Even more annoying are the reactors that use films as back drops for their lame comedy routines, and unfortunately those seem to be the most popular.
+tbone35453 Aww I just got my wine ready to enjoy this video and then I see this comment. It really went over their heads? I wanted to see their reaction to the satire of corporations.
The fiilm is a pretty obvious satire of corporatism. There are many aspects of the film you didn't really touch on. The film is much smarter than it looks on surface level. Both writers were interested in making a Judge Dredd film, but could not get the rrights for it. The British 2000 AD anthology magazine comic strip has a lot of satire and dark humor in it, which has inspired this movie. Not so much directly copying, but "inspired by". Some of the lines, like "You have 20 seconds to comply* have been lifted straight from the comic. The gag where Dredd faces a horde of enemies alone and says" Come quietly or there will be trouble" was used on at least two 2000 AD covers and was used in Robocop the same way. Some of the humor in Judge Dredd comes from ridiculous ad parodies, which is another common theme. There are also robots in the comic strip, the first multi part epic Dredd story being Robot Wars, where disgruntled robots turn on humans, trying to find freedom from slavery. Dredd on the other hand, is just a human, only a highly trained one, basically, a fascist future cop that, like other "Judges", has the power to act as a judge, jury and occasionally, the executioner, following The Law, to the letter, dishing out swift justoce, to keep the city safe. For quick reference, read the lyrics to Anthrax song "I am The Law". Another inspiration for the writers was Iron Man, which is also referenced in the movie, in the form of a cimic book. Charles Lippincott (RIP), who produced the 1995 Judge Dredd movie, was the rights holder to film rights to Dredd back then, and after seeing Robocip, said to its writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, that it was a great movie, but asked them, if they realize that if he was to release a Dredd movie , people would assume he was copying Robocop? The first iteration of the Robocop suit, for which Rob Bottin's FX team did the mock up for, was directly based on Judge Dredd, to which they then added features inspired by the design for Fritz Lang's Metropolis. You're right about Terminator's role in getting Robocop made. Orion had released Terminator and had great success with it, so as they were looking for a similar project and the writers Neumeier and Miner were shopping around their spec script, their pitch was a relatively easy sell. The writers collaborated again with Director Paul Verhoeven on Starship Troopers, where they turned Heinlein's book on its head, changing it to an obvious satire of Fascism and propaganda movies.
If you see a guy briskly walking while holding a box under the bridge in the drug warehouse that's my late uncle. I don't know why but I'm proud of it and like to share lol.
Little bit of trivia. The actor that got shot in the boardroom by ED209, still holds the record for the most number of blood squibs detonated in a single shot.
@@Dacre1000 I disagree. I think they're both very bright and have picked up many things in many different reactions that are buried within the films. For whatever reason, Robocop didn't do that for them. It didn't allow them in. It happens. I've been studying and teaching film my whole adult life and still have films that I have to watch multiple times to understand. Or, I need someone to say, "Watch this film while thinking about x, y, z..." which allows it to click for me. Just a part of being human :)
@@thelonelydirectorWell i've seen their other reactions and they're capable, but still it's one thing if you do that for yourself, another when you hit the internet with it, and you charge money for it. Not to be bright, even for one movie, on your own is fine, but in this case defense like that doesn't look good.
@@fhead8684 If you're watching RUclips reactors, are you watching them for their incising film critiques or for their personalities and experiences of watching films for the first time? If you're looking for an actual critique that's pondered and well thought out... I think first time reactions aren't really the place to be going. This seems more about feeling connected. Watching people watch something and go through emotions and their off the cuff take. It's more about fun than anything else. Also, you just reminded me I need to go support their patreon :D
@@thelonelydirector I'm watching reactors because i'm lonely and desperate 😂 But if to be serious, i usually expect people understand movies, how some of them awesome and how some terrible, if they fail to meat that goal i'm usually pissed. Because it's seems that being generic and having patreon this days is norm. Just for the clarification, i don't mean this guys, they actually seem to be decent dudes :D
6.8 / 10 .. ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh da fuk? out of your damn mind... You don't get action movies like this. The cast of characters in this are top tier. Sadly many movies now of days don't do this enough where even the side villains actually have personality. Classic 80s action movie.
I was in high school when this released. I remember going to see it with my father that weekend, and we enjoyed it so much, but it certainly did not hold back on anything. This was the first movie I saw where I truly hated the villain. Kurtwood Smith did such a great job as Clarence. I'd buy this movie for a dollar! This director, Paul Verhoven likes to go over the top, and tries to make movies that are comic book like. He also did Starship Troopers, which I think is a highly underrated movie.
This film becomes better when you understand that it's not about a robotic cop, but about rampant consumerism and the critical flaws in the American dream.
Funny facts: Peter Weller played TJ Laser in the movies TV commercial. Robocop started out as a bootleg Judge Dredd movie. The original sculpt had a judge Dredd Helmut. The more humanity he regains, the more human he sounds.
One reason this movie is incredible is its high level satire of corporatocracies. Its criticism of the military industrial complex, other forms of corporate welfare, gentrification, heartless and psychopathic business values, police suppression of the poor instead of addressing the causes of poverty, promoting technology that industry profits from at taxpayers' expense, infotainment, privatization, commercialism, consumerism, business propaganda, etc. It's not just an action movie with an amazing musical score, acting, special effects, set design, etc. With appreciation of its accurate satire, the movie deserves a 10 out of 10. Robocop is one of my top five favorite movies for several reasons.
Paul Verhoeven had a great way of building the background of his stories by showing things like adverts throughout his movies or clips of news broadcasts that showed you what the current political climate was like in that universe. Starship Troopers and the original Total Recall are very similar to Robocop in direction.

y'all are like, "he should have a catch phrase!" and then the sneeze covers up the very thing y'all are saying he should have, "Dead or alive, you are coming with me." LMAO
the entire point of him saying his name is murphy at the end, it shows he has fully gained his humanity
Oh... that rating hurt my soul :(
Yep.
Same. Fucking tragic.
I forgot how fucking crazy that toxic waste death was, one of the most hardcore kills in a film.
It single-handedly spawned the phrase “oh dude rewind it!”
The score was composed by Basil Poledouris, who also did the music for Conan the Barbarian (1982) & The Hunt for Red October (1990). Epic stuff!
I cannot wait for your Starship Troopers and Total Recall reactions, great films!!
Also please consider ‘They Live’, it’s a brilliant film that was beyond its time! 😁
Paul Verhoeven, John Mctiernan, Roland Emmerich and Cameron = master classes of 90's years action-scifi movies.
Where he gets brutalised by the thugs is still ,to this day, hard to watch.
Exactly. And key scenes from this film have been homaged over and over in TV shows and films It made THAT much of an impact.
In the modern world it is no longer an exaggeration it is reality.
Maybe because they're British? 🤔🤷♂️
@@MrCageCat I'm British I got it immediately. :)
@@Sisterspike1 Hmmm, age then, or just not their taste.
Fun fact. Whenever Robocop is in a car, he's in his underwear. They couldn't fit the bottom half of the costume in the car so he's driving around top half only, and in his boxers.
THAT is making the best out of a bad situation
Even if the film is ridiculously exaggerated, there is a lot of social criticism in it.
Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't spot that.
The tone and the funny looking robot movements were intentional, the director really leant into how ridiculous it would be to have a robot cop in this twisted satire of corporate America
6.8?!!
I think Robocop needs to come around your house because you’ve given this film a criminal rating!!
Boom, boom!!
A flick that did that with a small budget even by 1980s standards deserves at least a 7.9
When this movie came out, we walked like Robocop for months!
Stop. Put your satire glasses on. Watch the movie again. This is a fucking masterpiece.
Talk about missing the point of the movie.
I was always scared of the dad from That 70’s Show because he was Clarence Boddicker in this film.
Billy-Boy... HA! And that sneeze. I don't think I've ever laughed so much at your reactions! :D Good jorb, guys!
RoboCop is 10/10.
Peter Wellers performance is incredible. And the score is beautiful.
That score 😎😎😎
6.8? Satire really goes over you guy's heads
It gets over most people heads. Unfortunately.
I thought the film did an excellent job at satirizing American megacorporations
I think part of the reason you missed all the social commentary going on in the film is that you spent the film chatting/joking to eachother about the surface level stuff minute-by-minute. Which is sort of the point of these reaction videos I know, but I think it can stop a watcher really putting all their mind into interpreting what's happening (and why). I've noticed the same thing on several RUclips reaction channels.
I agree. It's annoying.
Yep, when some reactors with Ron over stuff and then make sweeping stamens about what they've just watched it annoyed the hell outta me. So many channels use what they're watching as a jumping off point for there own stupid point scoring and not analysing what they're just watched.
@@Sisterspike1 Couldn't agree more with you.
@@Sisterspike1 Even more annoying are the reactors that use films as back drops for their lame comedy routines, and unfortunately those seem to be the most popular.
@@blkluv100 Oh christ a big old yes to that one! I just feel like shouting "Don't give up ya day job hon!" LOL
Tom's reaction to the dude who melted dying with a big splat was awesome, he clearly loved it.
Verhoeven is the king of balancing silliness, bombastic bad-assery, and sly cynicism. Nobody does that tonal soup better.
Robocop is not a "stupid action film." It's a biting satire on 80s corporate greed and cynicism. Went over your heads.
+tbone35453 Aww I just got my wine ready to enjoy this video and then I see this comment. It really went over their heads? I wanted to see their reaction to the satire of corporations.
@@callumcowan7047 This is why I never read the comments until after I've watched the video.
It went over the head of most people when it came out. I think they got it more than when it first came out
You guys care too much about comments
@user-zh4vo1kw1z no it didn't how old are you?
This wasn't even remotely inspired by terminator.
That's true, it's actually inspired by the Judge Dredd comic books. That's why it has that streak of satire running through it.
@@shawnlopez2317 A well as using such terms as 'creep'.
Robocop is an 8 minimum.
Criminally underrated (Try Starship Troopers)
Yes yes, 1000 x yes
Robocop is one of my favorite movies of all time, your scores are way too low.
Ah yes, too low for a RUclips grunt's standards. Don't antagonize them about their opinions.
"Stupid Action Movie" that might be the worst take i've ever heard when it comes to this movie.
Yeah, this two are funny but they are not the brightest of the bunch.
Audience: "I'm very disappointed in this review."
Cinema Rules: "I'm sure it's just a glitch."
Audience: " You call this a glitch?!!"
Wait wait wait... did he just say that Judge Dredd was a more solid movie than Robocop? Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!
If I found this movie at a 99cent-store....I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!!
I'll show myself out the door.
This is a solid 9.5 such a classic
I´m very disappointed with your reaction guys, you didn´t pay enough attention to the movie. You should watch it again, that low score is a shame.
This movie is all about the little moments vs the hard core moments. We are incapable of creating perfection of this quality today...
