I don't care what anyone says, this is a modern day classic in my book. It has everything; action, drama, comedy, a love story, a one off plot so no sequel.....a great film. I love this movie. It's one I can watch anytime, anywhere.
I admit, I unabashedly love this movie. I got to see it in theaters when it came out, and it didn't look like any other science fiction film. I love how unique and completely out there it is. Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, Lucy, La Femme Nikita) who wrote and directed the film, said he was tired of films depicting the future as dark and grim, and wanted to go in a different direction. Doesn't hurt that he got Jean-Paul Gaultier, the French fashion designer, to create all the costumes. The Diva Dance scene has become pretty iconic, and I still hear people quote the "I am a meat popsicle" and "Multi-pass" lines. Some fun facts: The explosion in the lobby of the hotel is the largest indoor explosion ever filmed; Ruby Rhod is based on Prince and Michael Jackson, and Besson even wanted Prince to play the role originally.
Why unabashedly? There is no shame in loving this movie, it is a genuine sci-fi classic. Its like Napoleon Dynamite...there are only 3 types of people in this world: those who love it, those who haven't seen it, and those who simply just don't get it!

The point was, if she spoke English early on, then she could have explained everything to him. The fact she couldn't be understood by anyone other than Ian Holm meant that both Bruce Willis and also us as the audience, were left trying to figure out what was going on for a bit longer. I think your reactions are showing more and more that you guys have a very different perspective to viewers of my generation (born in the 70s). This was a quirky and original movie at the time it was released, the visuals and effects were impressive at the time, and it was deliberately unconventional in its approach. When it was released, the main criticisms were for Chris Tucker's over the top performance. It is a flawed classic. By no means does it have amazing acting or an amazing script, but as a cinematic experience it was very unique at the time, and has influenced many other films and videogames since, which is why it now no longer seems original to see it for the first time over twenty years later, as this kind of thing has been done to death by now.
I think we agree with pretty much everything you said there so I don’t think we have that much of a different perspective 😊 even though our discussions afterwards are classed as reviews, we still see them as first raw reactions to the film, we don’t give ourselves long enough to process the film either so we might say things that we change our opinion on as the film sits with us 😊 but we can understand every point you have made here and we probably didn’t make that clear enough in our video, we’re trying to get better at it though 😊 I think Tom liked this more then he realises however with me (Shaun) it just wasn’t my cup of tea, but can appreciate its unique take during the time it was made 😊
I was also born in the 70s, but can understand the criticism. The problem is, is that Luc Besson is an over the top filmmaker and lacks subtlety. And yes, that can work in a movie like Leon: The Professional, but doesn't translate well to other genres like science-fiction. This movie really needed a Stephen Spielberg who is much more nuanced with his projects.
@@homelessjesse9453 Err no completely wrong. Why should it be a more ordinary film? Why can't it be crazy, unique, witty, and colourful? You are making the mistake of thinking this is child's stuff. It isn't. Luc Besson is an incredible director who understands that a French sci-fi vision doesn't have to be ordinary. Hence the quirks, the humour, the Jean-Paul Gaultier outfits.
@@JohnnyZenith It's flawed by a messy narrative that strains to incorporate far too many grotesque and eccentric characters. For me, all the"crazy, unique" stuff felt tacked onto the story instead of being an integral part of it.
@Justin Credible Their reactions are so hindered by not only their own preconceived ideas but by well, gotta say their own ignorance of the history of cinema.
THIS! As someone who used to devour those comics (great way for my parents to "park" me in the comics section of the store when on vacation in France while they were indulging in French groceries) I not only recognized the style, I loved it.
They gave Total Recall a similar grade. That's another campy movie. They don't seem to get it. I am very curious to see what sci-fi they actually like.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 Except they gave Total Recall a 7.8/10 and an 8.5/10, which are pretty high ratings, so that means they just didn’t get RoboCop and The Fifth Element, but they really liked Total Recall though.
Guys, it is pointless to try to convince you of the greatness of this film , most people don't rate it high after the first watch. When I saw for the first time back in '97, didn't think much of it. Over the years, The Fifth Element grew on me, as it is insanely re-watchable. The slapstick humor mixed with over the top, burlesque like acting (especially from Chris Tucker, who is an absolute riot in this) is not for everyone. Luc Besson being the Frenchman, turned this into one of those fast paced silly french comedies, which works for me just fine, but it is an acquired taste. I recommend you guys re-watch this comedy masterpiece , trust me when I say the more you watch it the better it gets. It's up there with my all time favorites.
people tend to take this movie way too serious, the movie itself knows how cheesy it is, the dialogue is straight forward, "save the world", bad guy futuristic costumes, it's just a fun ride.... 10/10... a classic
@@susanmaggiora4800 Not so much a parody of cheesy B-Movies, but a hommage to 70s scifi comics published in "Heavy Metal" or "Pilot", two comic magazines originating in France. They even got one of the great comic artists from back then, Moebius, on board - which is why the movie has this unique look. Google "Incal" (a comic series by Moebius) and just look at the pictures you get as results. There's no way the Fifth Element can deny it's heritage in style and design. :) Also there's certain similarities between the heroes of the comic and the movie. Corben Dallas is a more masculine version of the unwilling protagonist John Difool (the fool).
All the things that you didn't like about this film is why it's one of my favourite, like top 10, films lol. It's one of those I can rewatch endlessly and never get sick of.
DeAndre Kennedy2003 The first time I saw it, he did kinda bug me. But after watching it a second time & finally getting the ‘joke’ that the whole movie is, I loved him. There are so many little quips in this film that don’t get caught the first (or even second) time.
I love his character in this movie. I get why people can be annoyed by it, because it IS an annoying character, but his comedic timing is just perfect! His screaming in the action sequence! OMG! 😂😂😂
Some trivia for you - the film's composer, Eric Serra, created The Diva dance to be technically impossible for a human voice - it should be impossible to hit some of the high notes so quickly one after another. Because of that Mula-Tchako had to sing the notes individually and then they were arranged digitally. However if you are interested and want to be amazed, you can check Dimash Kudaibergen singing this music piece.
There are quite a few sopranos who have been doing it for years. The notes can actually be sung. But the bit where she goes from a male baritone up to a high soprano headvoice is humanely impossible.
Yes, I was looking for this comment. And yes, it's the infamous, famous Mad Lucia aria that people just fell in love with and singers have been attempting to nail Perfectly ever since. Many come close, but the original is still The Best...and they made fun of it. Whatta world, whatta world. haha That soundtrack was awesome, though.
Also all the costumes are designed by "Jean-Paul Gautlier", that's the tone guys, lol 😂. And also R. I. P. for Ian Holmes (Bilbo Baggins) he was a great actor, who will be missed.!
I was so excited for you guys to watch this one.... Now I want to pretend it never happened. 😭I didn’t know a review could hurt my feelings so much. Lol My poor 90’s kid soul is dying.

Hated this film when I first saw it in the theater (theaters were a thing, once upon a time). I've watched it multiple times since and am now a fan for its strangeness, oddity, weirdness - there's really nothing like it. It's just plain fun and entertaining. And, damn, Milla!
@@cowpercoles1194 Yeah, I wonder if this story of the role being for Prince is a myth (as so many "fun facts" turn out to be). Because Prince is not known as a good actor, or a good comedian, and the role really needs both to succeed.

yeah they are in the extreme minority on this movie. It seems to me like they just like horror movies and dont really get other genres and what makes them great
One of the things I love about this film is the uniqueness of not having the hero and villain ever have a scene together. Corban and Zorg really aren't even aware that the other exists. How many other films can you say that about?
Between this and Robocop, I think it definitely pays to know what the film is aiming for. You have to judge art - whether it's film, music, whatever - on what it *is*, not what you think it is or want it to be.
We know what it is 😊 but it just isn’t our cup of tea 😊 just because something is what it says on the tin, doesn’t mean everyone should praise it (that’s just our opinion)
@@CinemaRules no, and that's fine. You don't *need* to like something if you don't. But as an example (not related to this film in particular), you can't critique a film for being "too over the top" when that's exactly what the film is going for. Don't get me wrong, love your work and you have some interesting takes on things . . . but there's a big difference between something not being your cup of tea and criticising something for things it pulls off perfectly just because those things aren't your cup of tea. If I'm gonna criticise dance music. "it focuses too much on the beat" wouldn't be where I'd start. ;)
This film was co-produced by French artists Jean-Claude Mézières & Jean Giraud, who throughout their illustrious career, have drawn in detail literally EVERYTHING that you saw in the movie. This movie is the realization of combining their entire life's work. Giraud invented Leeloo's language by amalgamating 12 different languages and he worked with Mila to fine tune it. To practice it, she had to speak it even when off-set. He had other movies planned but never got the funding for them. You should check out the making of documentary on this film. It is really an incredible feat and work of art. Also, the Diva's song is actually impossible for any human to actually sing without synthesized assistance. Many have tried, all have failed, or taken shortcuts. Yes, this film has a cult following.
This is a fun Sci Fi Action Adventure that has elements of Star Wars, James Bond, Blade Runner, Dune, 2001, Enter The Dragon, Sleeper, Brazil, Splash, RoboCop The Abyss, Stargate, and Species.
Its almost like younger generations have lost sight of the fact that a film can encompass multiple genres. It IS a sci-fi film. It IS an action/adventure. It IS a comedy. It knows exactly what it is and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do...entertain. Of course...thats only if you let it
We agree, but comedy is also subjective, and we think it’s annoying in its execution, it has nothing to with us losing sight of what the film is, it’s our opinion 😊 Being entertained is subjective too, not everything can be entertaining to someone and saying ‘just let it’ is not an answer, people have likes and dislikes and that’s okay 😊
@@CinemaRules dont misunderstand, i take no exceptions with you not liking or enjoying the movie. I was just making the observation that there were several instances where you were seemingly trying to understand what the film was going for...as opposed to simply going along for the ride. Maybe i read too much into your reactions, but it was almost as if you had expectations of seeing a different film than the one on the screen. Ive noticed similar "what? Why? Huh?" reactions from other younger reactors in recent months. Hence my observation. If the shoe I've presented does not fit, feel free to disregard. Cheers 🍻
The production design, creature design, and costuming are awesome. You’ve got to appreciate that Besson had an original vision and managed to consistently capture it without compromise.
You gentlemen really need to get over this movies have to have a single tone nonsense. it will truly inhibit your enjoyment of thousands of wonderful films.
I feel like Chris Tucker in this movie is very divisive. You either love him or hate him. I can understand why people would hate it, but he just gets the biggest laughs out of me the entire movie. I absolutely love this film. I think the world building and design is incredible, the characters are interesting, and I just have fun watching it. For me it's about an 8.5
A metric that never fails - you know a reaction is trash when one of the first significant observations is a criticism of "cgi" techniques that are as old if not older than the actual viewer.
If you watch our review you’ll notice the first significant observation we make after watching the film in its entirety is the unique tone It’s okay and perfectly valid if someone comments on the CGI of a film when watching haha
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. 9/10 I'm not surprised that Millennials don't understand the movie. What is it with Millennials where they see intimate scenes and react like they just saw their entire family brutally murdered? Jockovich? LOL
I think its weird they don't like it actually. Because half the stuff that comes out on the internet is completely pointless nuttiness. You would think Chris would be right up there alley.
It's not quite your Robocop review, but it's close! The film is really a Scifi French Farce, not a straight up scifi move...it helps to look at it through that prism. Very similar to Barbarella in a lot of respects!
Yes, Barbarella was also done by a French director Roger Vadim (married to Jane Fonda, the film's star, at the time). It's very much in the style of French comic books. Luc Besson based The Fifth Element on a story he came up with as a teenager, it's supposed to be fun as lots of people have said. It seems you guys weren't in the right mood or state of mind or haven't experienced comedic sci-fi much. it's a space opera (with literally a blue alien singing opera in it) with a big galactic threat, many characters and melodrama. Star Wars is space opera too.
I get a little miffed when people keep thinking future depictions in films are what they thought it would actually look like. It often isn't. It's a fantastical stylised vision in that universe. I love this movie and would have loved a sequel. The exaggerated look, costumes, everything. More films should have this passion. I don't understand why you don't get the film. All the jokes and exaggerated performances land for me. Ruby is hilarious. Disappointed but there you go. Gary Oldham's character isn't lazy, none of it is. 10/10.

@@Silver-rx1mh Creativity alone doesn't make for an involving story. The visuals are stunning but the plot and execution are blah. @@CinemaRules It totally rewards a repeat viewing after a decent break if you didn't like it at first. Part of it is letting go of preconceptions of what a sci-fi film should be, especially if growing up with mostly American and/or some UK cinema. The Fifth Element is from a very French, and more uniquely very Luc Besson perspective. Many of his films are extremely stylised, and not intended to be "realistic" as such. Kid movie??? I love you guys, but sometimes you don't get anything. You were prejudiced from the very beginning and your reaction during the amazing Diva performance was meh. This movie is really amazing and inspired a ton of other films, not just sci-fi. Strongly disagree with you about this film and Suspiria (1977)
I've watched 4 or 5 vids now and the brunette (tom?) seems like the only one even the least bit curious or interested in the movies they are watching. The blonde just acts like he's too cool to like anything and it comes off super pretentious. And he's far too confident in his clearly uneducated opinions about film. Wish Tom would make his own channel, he actually watches the movies with an open, creative mind and at least attempts to enjoy the movie.
The first time I thoroughly disagree with the two of you. This is one of the best sci-fi blockbusters ever. It's iconic. "Multi-Pass!" People love it. Besides you two heathens. XD
Jean-Paul Gautier should have been nominated for best costume design. And from what I heard in Hollywood, several people wanted Chris Tucker should have also been nominated. He put it ALL out there in every moment of his scenes! I agree.
5?! Wth! At least a 7. Now that I think of it, the last scene reminds me of something a Bond film would end with, with the hero in bed with the love interest.
Saw this in theaters when it came out. Yes, it was weird to us. To all of us. Although I don't think we had quite the reaction of being as weirded out as you two seem to. Also, what do you mean, "Why?" It ends pretty much the way all Bond movies do: hero saves the world, gets the girl, they have sex, the end. (This was the very first movie I ever saw Chris Tucker in, so I always think of Ruby Rhod whenever I saw him in any other film, including the Rush Hour series.)
I think they planned to not like it. It's one of their most requested movies. Their reasons for not liking it is very generic or the exact opposite of what people generally liked in the movie. I've seen other reaction videos on this movie and by just going into the comment section, you get an idea what your audience likes By reacting negatively, they trigger people to comment, more. Same trick is used in reality tv talentshows. The one with the best voice gets the worst feedback from the panel and the audience at home starts texting and voting to keep their favourite in...KERRCHING! Ratings and engagement.
Your reactions were great, but 5th Element was never a serious movie ! 😂Forgotten it came out so long ago....but what a blast to see clips again here. I know I'm late to the party but may I add that this is one of my favorite movies. It is silly, but has some interesting undertones on different philosophies. That Leelo has red hair for instance. The ancient giants were often described as being red headed. The priest and the industrialist/capitalist discussion representing the spiritual vs greed. Or maybe I should just turn off my mind and enjoy the ride. Cause that works too.
I grew up reading Heavy Metal magazine. It was chocked full of bizzarre sci-fi stories with the most awesome artwok, and this movie always seemed like it came straight out the pages of that magazine to me.
I feel like you had both of the major reactions. Either you didnt buy into how over the top it was and really didn't like it, or you went along for the crazy ride and loved it. I fell into the loved it camp.
All I can say is, christ lads, you've got to go out and develop an imagination. Your lack of one seems to be severely hindering your ability to understand the history of movies. *Shot of characters being blown away by gunfire*. "Now thats the kind of thing I'm after". Lord, that says It all doesn't it.....
In the late 70s early 80s there was a magazine started in France and translated in English called Heavy Metal. The science fiction and fantasy stories and art work were ground breaking. This movie is right out of the style of that magazine. In context, it is a perfect film. One of my favorites.
The more you watch this movie, the more you will like it. And maybe it isn't the more you watch it.. Maybe it is the older you get, and the more same old shit, and how unique this movie is, from the costumes to the strange setting, to the mix of genres.. It is simply different. I hated this movie the first time I watched it. I have grown to love this movie over the years.
I just ran across this reaction today. And, I have to correct something you said. This is billed originally as a Sci-Com, Science Fiction Comedy. This is not an Action Adventure film. It has action moments, but that was not the focus. In fact it was intended to poke fun at Action Adventure movies. Especially with all the "product placement" references, too.
On a different note, the vocals of the Diva Dance (the operatic part) were specifically written to be biologically impossible for a human to correctly vocalize. Opera singers have been taking that as a challenge since the movie's release. I have heard some that have come damn close.
"lul"? Did you mean 'lol'? Lul means 'dick' in my language. Commonly used to call someone an idiot. As in: 'Watch it, lul! It's a green light!' Or:.'..makes better sense, dick'😂😂
I think "Unique" is a very proper reason to love this movie. I was also into musician Tricky who played Oldman's main henchman. Bruce Willis delivers possibly his most "Bruce Willis" roles, and annoying as Chris Tucker is, I think so many of those lines are hilarious and quotable." Are we green? Super green." And finally, major crush on Mila.

That seems to be the general consensus. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic score it a 7, which seems about right to me.

@@Jiff321 That's not what cult classic means.

It wasn't their first watch, though
Yeah. Most people don't get that it is a French film, and watch it with an American "lens". So they don't get what they expect.

We agree, but comedy is also subjective, and we think it’s annoying in its execution, it has nothing to with us losing sight of what the film is, it’s our opinion 😊

Is not you. Believe me.
Your reactions were great, but 5th Element was never a serious movie ! 😂Forgotten it came out so long ago....but what a blast to see clips again here. Had a lot of fun watching back in the day & again today... For a laugh out loud sci-fi movie, with a unique look, sound and characters - I give it a 9/10 😎
This is still one of the most creative and visually stunning movies ever made.
You knew that this movie is the only one where its protagonist, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), never meets his antagonist Zorg
(Gary Oldam) ???👀👀👀😱😱

Most overused comment in Fifth Element reaction videos....
Newsflash: it is not the only movie where protagonist and antagonist never meet.😂
The movie is wonderful and Milla Jovovich nailed her part, apart from being extremely beautiful.
I
As a kid i watched this dumbass movie so many times but i still love it
I grew up reading Heavy Metal magazine. It was chocked full of bizzarre sci-fi stories with the most awesome artwok, and this movie always seemed like it came straight out the pages of that magazine to me.
That’s due to the Jean Giraud (aka “Moebius”) connection!
I feel like you had both of the major reactions. Either you didnt buy into how over the top it was and really didn't like it, or you went along for the crazy ride and loved it. I fell into the loved it camp.
That’s fair enough, we can enjoy the cheesiness, and it’s probably one I would share with the family, but not really my cup of tea haha
Chris Tucker also plays in it, I think that might have been one of his first scifi film.
It says they have no taste in art.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 They do have a taste of art. It just wasn’t their thing.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 it’s a good thing that people have different taste!
In the late 70s early 80s there was a magazine started in France and translated in English called Heavy Metal. The science fiction and fantasy stories and art work were ground breaking. This movie is right out of the style of that magazine. In context, it is a perfect film. One of my favorites.
That’s due in no small part to the direct connection between both of Jean Giraud (aka “Moebius”)
Try “Leon - The Professional” for the same Director... is a Great Movie with one of the best charecter’s of Gary Oldman!!!
On a different note, the vocals of the Diva Dance (the operatic part) were specifically written to be biologically impossible for a human to correctly vocalize. Opera singers have been taking that as a challenge since the movie's release. I have heard some that have come damn close.
if you think of it like a giant live action comic book , it makes more sense or maybe just makes its stylization make better sense lul ..
