Fun Fact: The movie was based on a Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" and was originally to star Richard Dreyfuss. David Cronenberg was attached as director and came up with the idea of mutants. After disagreements with the producers, Cronenberg quit the movie and it went into development hell. Schwarzenegger was a big fan of the original story and approached the producers to star but they turned him down. After Cronenberg left and the movie became in limbo, Schwarzenegger bought the rights of the original story from the producers, and help fund the movie with his own money. He then hired Paul Verhoeven to direct after being impressed by RoboCop. The direction of the movie changed from a space noir to a space action movie.

The remake made the mistake of remaking the movie, not interpreting Dick's story differently or more faithfully. the following is the plot of the story via wikipedia and it is very different from the way the movie ended: Douglas Quail works a menial office job in the "not too distant future." His biggest dream has always been to visit Mars but is constantly dissuaded by his wife. Quail eventually discovers Rekal Incorporated, where he goes to receive memory implants of having traveled to Mars. To the shock of the Rekal technicians, under sedation, Quail somehow regains erased memories of who he really is. Quail's memories reveal that he really is a secret agent who has been to Mars. The Rekal representative, McClane, refunds half of Quail's money and sends him home. Quail thinks that the operation was a failure because his memories are blurry, and he remembers his trip to the office to get the procedure done. He returns home still believing the memories are fake but discovers a box of fauna smuggled from Mars in his desk. He confronts his wife about whether or not he has actually been to Mars, and she angrily leaves him. Two armed men suddenly enter and reveal that Quail has a telepathic transmitter in his head that allows them to read his thoughts. Through this interaction, Quail suddenly remembers why he had his memories erased: Quail wasn't just a secret agent, he was an assassin who killed a political opponent for Earth's government. With his memories returned, the armed men appeal to Quail to surrender, but Quail, with his abilities awakened as well, fights them off and escapes. Wondering what to do, Quail's former commanders suddenly speak to him through the telepathic transmitter. Quail suggests going through another mind-wipe, but this time replacing his current awareness of being an assassin with the pleasant memory of an exciting life. His commanders agree, feeling that it is their obligation to help their former agent. Quail turns himself in and is placed with a psychiatrist to figure out what his own personal desires are. When he was young, Quail used to fantasize that as a child he came across minuscule [rodent-like] aliens that were going to launch a full invasion of Earth with their superior technology. However, young Quail was so kind and accepting of the aliens that they decided to hold off on their invasion as long as he was alive. While finding the fantasy narcissistic, his commanders agree to plant the memories at Rekal. To everyone's shock, those memories turn out to be real as well.

And one where Stephen Baldwin acts his character really well (don't look at me funny like that! I think this is one of the movies adapted from a novel by Philip K. Dick. His books were also behind Minority Report, The Adjustment Bureau and Blade Runner.
This movie holds a special place for me. When I was touring the new school that I was transferring to this lady came into the office and spoke to one of the administrators. My mom and I watched her, and after she left my mom said, "She looks just like the lady from Total Recall!" After I became a student there (San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts) I found out that she was Pricilla Allen, and that she WAS the actress who played the part of Arnold dressed up as the woman who goes through the detector and who's head explodes! She was the director of our drama department. Sadly she passed away in 2008. She was a wonderful teacher and human! R.I.P Mrs Allen! ❤️
I confess to a bias but I love Verhoeven movies. Always Grand Guignol in flavour and a lot of fun while usually married to a surprisingly sharp sense of satire or commentary. Certainly never dull.
The effects in this movie completely blew our mind back in the day. Especially the x-ray skeleton running through the airport thingy, and the 'get ready for a surprise' head, and the facial puppetry.
Glad to see you've enjoyed Total Recall - it was a massive summer hit in 1990. You might like 1981's OUTLAND with Sean Connery and Frances Sternhagen (the elderly headteacher who throws the tin of peas in The Mist). I love the pairing of those two leads, wish they'd been in a couple more films together. Have you seen Misery from 1990? Frances Sternhagen plays the old sheriff's wife.
I don't know which I like better, your scared faces or your surprised wtf faces 😂 this one was fun! Maybe consider watching "Flash Gordon!" It's kind of this feel but has an amazing soundtrack from Queen!

Another great reaction, guys! 👍 The remake is alright and worth checking out but it just doesn't have the same feel as this one. Probably due to the lack of Arnie. The effects are outstanding though! PS So was the whole movie just a dream/implant? 🤔 It was exactly what he asked for at Rekall... 3:29.
5:09 according to director Paul Verhoeven on the DVD commentary, the team of the sound edit and him spend a lot of evenings biting into tones of apples to creat the perfect sound for these cracking necks ;)
Great reaction video guys. Love this film. The open ending is great, did he just dream it all or not? Personally I think he did, the mention of Blue Sky On Mars and the pic of Melina while he in the chair before passing out at Rekall does it for me as all a dream. There also a fan theory he is suffering a schizoid embolism during the whole film at Rekall and the bright white fade out at the end is him dying. 👍
@@Chrisbajs Also "Mellom Bakkar og Berg"/"Nordmannen", "Vi Ere en Nasjon vi Med"/"Barnas Nationalsang", "Sønner av Norge"/"Norsk Nationalsang", etc. "Ja, Vi Elsker" didn't become the "offical" one until a year ago (decades after this film came out) and it is still isn't the only one used.
A nice touch is when Arnie is at Rekall choosing his trip a few flip past but the one it settles on is read out by the doctor's assistant as called "Blue Sky on Mars" and a picture of the alien machine shows on the screen. He gets what he chose so maybe it is .. all a dream? A great concept and a fun film. Nice reaction video too.
Excellent use of the "Khaaaan!" there. Also, "Makes me wish I had three hands!" - He did indeed have three hands. IIRC, that kind of foreshadowing happens a few times.
There was an alternate cut of the movie where after the fade to white, they show him in a chair with a bunch of techs walking around. Only saw it once (the alternate cut) on late night cable, and I don't know it it's even included on the blue-ray or not.
Everything that's happening to Quaid is exactly what the Rekall guy tells him when he's still trying to sell him the memory implant. From being an agent saving a planet right down to the sleazy brunette Quaid chooses a few minutes later. Basically the entire plot is given away right from the start and nonetheless you (the audience) don't notice that while watching the movie progress, which is totally insane and absolutely ingenious. When you realize that pulling this stunt off successfully is pretty much unbelievable and nearly impossible, you'll also realize that it is a downright masterpiece and truly one of a kind. Not to forget that there's no digital/visual fx happening, except for the walk-through body scanner. But the rest: Miniatures, stop motion, animatronics, rear projection, sfx makeup, photochemical stuff, etc... One of the the very last movies beside for example "Alien 3" right on the brink to the digital/visual fx age. It's so effing beautiful. Movie making and story telling at its very best... ^^
Total Recall! One of my favorite Schwarzenegger films! Another great one of his is Running Man, so you might want to check that out since it's a fun watch. Anyways, great video as always!
I've always thought the whole thing was a dream. When Arnie went to Recall, if you pay close attention the assistant says "Hey that's a new one - blue sky on Mars".

"shoot her!"..... that's gotta be the Jurassic Park one. I do it all the time.
You understand 😉👌🏼
"Clever girl"...
I love how almost every scene in the movie has a twist
And the final twist, blue skies on Mars, is a twist not many get
@@harish123az “That’s a new one, blue skies on Mars!”
This movie is simply fantastic
The effects in this movie completely blew our mind back in the day. Especially the x-ray skeleton running through the airport thingy, and the 'get ready for a surprise' head, and the facial puppetry.
I don't know if you guys realized, but 5he hot blonde who played his wife is Sharon Stone, she became a big star after this movie
She was in a few movies before Total Recall like Allen Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold, but Total Recall really boosted her career.
Loved the little woman on top of the bar shooting that machine gun!!!!
This movie had a budget of US$56 million. At the time, it was one of the most expensive films ever made. It took US$261 million at the box office.
Another lockdown again 😞
Your videos cheered me up. Thanks lads. Shout out to James!
Nothing more exciting that to see a new Cinema Rules review! ...especially when Im supposed to be working, ha ha
You guys actually look at each other now when you look at each other! I didn't think it mattered but I like it. 👍🙂
You guys are awesome, I enjoy your reactions & your videos are a great pick me up.
I love that you guys were watching James Vs Cinema! I'm subscribed to you both! You're both my favorite cinema reaction channels :]
Omg you finally have the setup so you actually look the right way at each other when you talk 👍😍😉
3:05, he wants to go to Mars so badly, he doesn't know what he's in for.
I don't know which I like better, your scared faces or your surprised wtf faces 😂 this one was fun! Maybe consider watching "Flash Gordon!" It's kind of this feel but has an amazing soundtrack from Queen!
Soooo cheesy! But fun! 😁
Wow. James must be so humbled by your generosity. That was great, thank you.
I agree with you that he deserves it.
You guys are the best! Great Job Guys!
Great video guys, really enjoy your content, and the only other film reaction/opinion channels I watch are James VS Cinema and Shan Watches Movies! so liked seeing James at the start) Cheers, keep up the good work.
1:57, love the music and opening title.
Paul Verhoven didn't shy away from violent scenes :) That poor sap Arnold used as a human shield !
9:38, that's so cool how they did that effect!!
I love how you casually have James vs Cinema going in the background :) He's one of my favourite reactors
You guys are going on a ride tonight. This movie is really good. Sharon Stone is awesome in it. She is a fighter. Don't forget lady in a cage with James Caan and Olivia de Havilland. It is a good movie.
Going? Pretty sure they already finished watching by the time this got edited and uploaded.
One of the all-time Arnie greats. Everyone wanted to see this!
James playing in the background aye!! 😁
Watching these dudes watching and reacting to the film makes me realize how amazing the film really is. Not that I didn’t already know it, but...
Looooove your both reactions! U both made my day! Thank u!❤✌🏾 from New Orleans!
Fun Fact: The robot cabbie is whisteling the national anthem of Norway.
Norwegian here and i didnt remember this. Has to check it out again.
Which one? Norway has like at-least four.
@@Painocus No, we don't. It's called "Ja, Vi Elsker".
@@Painocus Ja, Vi Elsker has for generations been the de facto national anthem.
6:31 they run like they’re in the ballet
“I like this more than Predator”
Correct answer >:)
Now all we need is for them to check out Running Man and realise it is the best of the bunch!
@@VeggieGamer Well that hits the spot!
@@mnomadvfx No more lonely nights!!
Funny fact: "get yer ass to Mars" is a direct reference to "Follow the Yellow brick road" from Wizard of Oz.
really? never picked up on that, though it makes sense in hindsight...
thanks for teaching me this!
Very cool of you to promote other reactors on the tv in the background. You're good people
The human body can not block bullets, they go right through. LOL
Not all the time, and not if they're hollow points
Really enjoy the "subtle" shout outs! James is a beast
OMG you guys fixed the bubble head positioning. Always looked weird. :P
I love this movie. And I feel like it has aged well.
First thing I thought when I saw the video title was "oh, this is totally a Tom film he's gonna love it, Shaun will be lukewarm on it" Pretty close!
PLEASE REACT TO TRUE LIES (1994) Arnold Schwarzeneger and Jamie Lee Curtis directed by James Cameron.
Another one of Arnies best films.
Perfect film , still waiting to grab that in 4K
True Lies is One of my ALL time top 3 favorite movies.
Neeeeeed lol
Total Recall! One of my favorite Schwarzenegger films! Another great one of his is Running Man, so you might want to check that out since it's a fun watch. Anyways, great video as always!
Great to see James vs Cinema in the background of the intro :)
9:25
Guy in the beret is Gul Dukat from ST: DS9
I've always thought the whole thing was a dream. When Arnie went to Recall, if you pay close attention the assistant says "Hey that's a new one - blue sky on Mars".
It's funny watching you guys recoil in horror. I was 14 when this came out. Couldn't watch it in theatre of course, but on VHS, we wore that tape out. We loved the violence.
You need to watch Tucker and Dale vs Evil , please search it out as it so so gory and bloody funny as hell . It really is a must watch in my opinion.
Tucker and Dale is quality.
10:54 that's Hank from Breaking Bad I know that voice from anywhere!
I had forgotten how much fun this movie is XD
None of it happened. Arnold only thought he said all of those classic one-liners.
