The doctors trying to save Murphy sound very realistic - because they are a real ER team. The director wanted the scene to be as genuine as possible so he paid a real crew to come in for the scene.
The interesting part about that scene, is that one of the doctors ask the other one what time is it, she said 6:15 "Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the *new creation* " ~ Galatians The New International Version *6:15* And toward the end of the movie Robocop was walking on the water like Jesus Christ. "For in *Christ Jesus* neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a *new creature* " ~ Galatians *6:15* - King James Version That was pretty clever of the director to make a bible reference toward the death of Murphy that would lead a new creation of Robocop, by having the time of when they gave up to the same bible number verse to where that "a new creation" line comes in.
@Kimball Shirley talking about circumsicion, three scenes with penis, first the zip up scene, then the pee on a pant with dick jones and last the kick leon gives to robocop.
When this came out in theaters, it was the most violent film I'd ever seen up until that point. It was shocking, and yet also done with such a brilliant sense of humor as well.
The director's cut had more gory scenes, such as showing Murphy' brains being blown out. The melting man was almost cut out, but the screening audience loved it.
@@droidx1191 It was shocking in so many ways. The violence, co-ed showers, and the humor was wild. I was 13 when this came out and even the toned down version (this one) was nuts to us. Heck back then, the Taurus was high tech. Jeez I am old.
Because director Paul Verhoeven is Dutch and Jost Vocano (his director of photography for that scene) is German, they didn't realize how insulting "bitch" is in English, and they kept addressing and referring to the two actresses bitches while they were shooting the scene. The actresses took it in stride, and Miguel Ferrer and Kurtwood Smith kept cracking up.
RoboCop is great. Science fiction, action, and satire blended together perfectly. You should watch Total Recall, from the same director and has a similar tone but in a completely different story.

@@robertzamora4282 It's only proof that Murphy _legally_ died. "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead." Starship Troopers doesn't deserve the name. He took a shitty script called "Bug Hunt", bought the rights to the Hugo Award-winning novel Starship Troopers, and started pasting in names and details.

Clarence Boddicker is definitely in my top five cinema villains of all time. Choosing Kurtwood Smith to play that role was a brilliant bit of casting, precisely because he doesn't fit the stereotype at all. But he he does bring a ton of ice cold psychopathy to the role, which is exactly what the character needed.
The fact that this movie even got made is pretty remarkable. From production delays to Peter Weller not being able to move in the suit, this movie went through quite a few trials. Great Movie. .You know that it took allot of takes for the scene where Robocop catches the key. Also Paul Verhoeven which is the director of the movie is the guy who catches the gun in the club and also the guy who scream in the car commercial. Other great Paul Verhoeven movies Total Recall, Starship troopers and Hallow Man. Fyi the secretary of Dick Jones is the actual wife of the bad guy Clarence :) . Other great robot movies are Short Circuit (1 and 2) and Bicentennial Man. Also kind movie with a robot or at least AI is Flight Of The Navigator 1986.
The sound design is brilliant - especially the heavy sound of his footfalls. I think he died die but they revived him, at least the bits they wanted. Dead and not dead is very murky territory these days. People are temporarily 'killed' for surgery in some cases.
The lead gangster was played by Kurtwood Smith. He played on a very popular TV program called "That 70's Show" as the grouchy father known as "Red". He also had roles in "Apocalypse Now" and "Dead Poets Society".
Every aspect of this film is perfect - the satire, special effects, social commentary, soundtrack, directorial style, performances.... But what really sets it apart, for me, is that it has a soul. The scene where Murphy returns to his home and has his flashbacks, aided by the stunning music, always gets me. What could have easily turned out to be a dud became a timeless, all time classic.
Paul Verhoeven dir THREE SciFi-Action-Satire movies: - Rococop (1987) - Total Recall (1990) - Starship Troopers (1997) You should try out the other two of this list, too. By the way: Robocop 2 is also not bad (following sequels are better avoided).
You can thank makeup effects artist Rob Bottin and his talented team for making all the gore, the toxic waste, Alex Murphy's robot-half-head, and the whole RoboCop suit, among the many other effects of people being shot and such. Bottin's work can be found in films such as Se7en, Total Recall, The Thing, Legend (Dawn, you should TOTALLY add "Legend" to your list. You would LOVE it!), The Howling, as well as contributing to Star Wars. The practical makeup effects of the late 70s to early 90s are some of the best ever made. With absolutely no CGI to fall back on whatsoever, artists had to be super creative in using practical effects, and it showed. Real things happening in real time, in-camera: you just can't beat it. CGI has made fantastic contributions to the reality of film effects; it's a major player with good reason. But there remains something about practical effects that is just so visceral and raw.
I remember watching it as a kid when it came out. The toxic waste and the shot in Murphy's hand....those scenes were in my head for a loooong time. The movie was so successful that they made video games, cartoons, everything.... We used to walk around pretending we were robocop. Hahahaha Good times. By the way, the robot sound is indeed a Pig screaming, but mixed with two other things I can't remember.
Since you’re open to watching silent films. A great, classic science fiction film about a robot. “Metropolis” (1927) The entire feature is actually up on RUclips
Yes there are Robocop 2 & 3, but they're not as good. My story about Detroit: When my wife was in high school, they had a class trip to Europe. When they were at the hotel in Paris, a group of the kids were going down in the elevator. One of the kids had a Detroit Red Wings (hockey team) jacket on. When the doors opened, there was an old couple there. One of them saw the words on the jacket and got a look of terror, pointed and yelled, "De-twah! You have gun!!" and they ran away.
Love your content. Entertaining and keeps my attention. Love your personality and you're gorgeous. I saw this movie for the first time as a kid. Still is a great movie. Thank you for the awesome content.
You'd actually be surprised how many people get shot in the head and survive, whilst not the largest number ever, it does happen! This was a great movie, just a shame the MPAA kept on requiring so many cuts just to get it an R rating when it originally came out, but it gave is something to look forward to in the future... the Director's Cut!
There is a Robocop 2 & 3! Both of them have some good action, but it’s not as great as the first. There is also a remake from 2014 and it’s pretty decent. I’m glad you enjoyed this movie, Dawn! Robocop & ED-209 are awesome together in this film and I wished they’d been like allies.
I guess all the follow-ups have something interesting about them, but none of them is even half as good as the original. Maybe they should have gone with Dawn's idea and made the female partner a cyborg in the sequel. Imagine how much fun Verhoeven would have had with "Ms. Robocop".
@@ThreadBomb Verhoeven's story telling is about identity, finding one's true self. This can be seen in Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers. Murphy's journey to find himself was pretty much over after the first film.
Detroit is still a very bad city it’s high crime rate can be attributed to a long history of economic decline, poverty, and drug addiction. The city's loss of manufacturing jobs, decline in population and tax revenue, and the crack epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s also played a major contributing factor to the decline of the city.
"Either this is going to be a comedy... or it's gonna be dead serious" You were kinda right on BOTH! It's more of a satire than a pure comedy but it has funny bits, yeah. It's one of the few movies where I can go and say it's a 10/10. Also, you can't imagine how long I've waited for someone to react to this movie without knowing ANYTHING because I always wantet to see someone's FIRST TIME reaction to gradually seeing Robocop be more and more revealed... first you see the arm, then a glimpse of the head, then a blurred image of the upper body through the glas... whereas my first experience with the movie was seeing a friend basically rewind through all the talking bits (cause the movie was in a foreign language) and just watching the action sequences, with me sitting right next to him. Kind of an odd experience for a 9 year old. :D Also, people recommended other Paul Verhoeven sci-fi movies: Starship Troopers and Total Recall and you should see both instead of watching any of the Robocop sequels (although Robocop 2 is still decent and has some cool ideas and great visual effects but I'd stop at that one because Robocop 3 is utter trash).
22:22 If nobody has mentioned it yet Kurtwood Smith who plays Clarence Boddicker is actually married to the woman playing Dick Jones’s secretary in real life. They met on the set of Robocop and have been together since.
I really don't think toxic waste should just be laying around for anyone to get dumped into, joker, that guy, toxic avenger, pretty much the only time in history toxic waste helped anyone is dare devil
This came out when I was 6 and saw it on TV when I was maybe 10? That scene of Murphy being shot to smithereens was so shocking but so cool. My Dad let us watch all sorts 😂.

"I, Robot" is a good film about robots and what would happen if they take over the service industry and become a part of our lives. The film asks interesting questions about what it means to be human. Highly recommend. Thanks for reacting! Robocop is an all-time classic.
Believe it or not it is actually pretty simple, you just have to unscrew the fuse and change it out with a different fuse for a grenade. Fragmentation grenades usually have a very short fuse but fuses for smoke grenades have an instant fuse which is why when you see soldiers "pop smoke", it happens instantly so you simply switch the fuses, simple. Essayons!
Great reaction Dawn. Some other robot movies to check out: Robocop 2 (1990) It's a pretty good sequel. Pacific Rim (2013) Giant robots fighting giant monsters, what more could you ask for? Westworld (1973) This was also made into a series a few years ago. Wall-E (2008) Animated movie about a lonely robot in the future. Chappie (2015) Interesting movie from South Africa Ex Macina (2014) This movie blurs the lines between AI robots and humans Real Steel (2011) Estranged father and son bond over piloting fighting robots. The Iron Giant (1999) Animated, Giant alien robot crashes on earth and befriends 9 year old boy i, Robot (2004) a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot. Short Circuit (1986) Robot number 5 becomes self aware after a short circuit in its wiring. Batteries not Included (1987) Miniature alien robots help a feisty old New York couple in their battle against the ruthless land developer who's out to evict them. ALITA: Batter Angel (2019) A deactivated cyborg is revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is. Based on a Japanese Manga.
I'm not afraid of the robots taking over. It's not like I have any choice in how anything's run now. They'll probably just do things more rationally and efficiently.
All real grenades have a timer in the form of an internal fuse, but I've never seen one with a digital timer before, either--other bombs, yes, obviously, but not a grenade type of design specifically.
You would have looked, but you “wouldn’t have made eye contact with it”? That’s hilarious! I suppose in a situation like that it would be safer to use your peripheral than to look it straight in the eye.
22:20 The actress playing the secretary is Joan Pirkle, who married Kurtwood Smith a year after this film's release. They first met filming this scene. They're still together to this day.
The "I can feel them, but I can't remember them" line is absolutely something you wouldn't expect out of a movie in this genre. One of the many reasons this movie still holds up today.

I think he died die but they revived him, at least the bits they wanted. Dead and not dead is very murky territory these days. People are temporarily 'killed' for surgery in some cases.
Agreed about the sound effects. Other standouts are all the noises made by ED-209, and the sound of Robocop's gun. Good score too.
The lead gangster was played by Kurtwood Smith. He played on a very popular TV program called "That 70's Show" as the grouchy father known as "Red". He also had roles in "Apocalypse Now" and "Dead Poets Society".
"I thought it was gonna be like Inspector Gadget..." Girl, it's rated "R"...😅😂😂😂😂
Paul Verhoeven dir THREE SciFi-Action-Satire movies:
- Rococop (1987)
- Total Recall (1990)
- Starship Troopers (1997)
You should try out the other two of this list, too.
By the way: Robocop 2 is also not bad (following sequels are better avoided).
21:00 This movie has some of the best stop animation since Jason and the Argonauts.
You should a few of Paul Verhoeven films: 1990 Total Recall, 1992 Basic Instinct, 1997 Starship Troopers
Rob also worked on The Fog (original directed by John Carpenter).
RoboCop 2 is nowhere near as good, but there's a scene or two that's worthwhile. RoboCop 3 is awful. And the remake is INCREDIBLY bad.
I remember watching it as a kid when it came out. The toxic waste and the shot in Murphy's hand....those scenes were in my head for a loooong time. The movie was so successful that they made video games, cartoons, everything.... We used to walk around pretending we were robocop. Hahahaha Good times. By the way, the robot sound is indeed a Pig screaming, but mixed with two other things I can't remember.
while throwing a temper tantrum like a 2 year old lol
Since you’re open to watching silent films.
A great, classic science fiction film about a robot.
“Metropolis” (1927)
The entire feature is actually up on RUclips
The acid death in the end is my favorite movie death scene ever. :)
Recommendation:
‘Highlander’ (1986). I very much suspect you’ll love it.
I can't stop seeing boddicker as Red, the dad in "that 70's show"
Just remember, your ass just hung out a 'vacancy' sign, and his FOOT"S looking for a room...😂😂😂
There was also the 1994 Canadian TV series, and 2001 mini-series based on the 1994 TV franchise.
Robocop 2 was written by Frank Miller and directed by Irvin Kirshner. I don't know how it wasn't gold.
Robocop 2 is fantastic, one of the best sequels of all time IMO, Robocop 3 is trash.
The actor who plays criminal Clearance Boddicker, Kurtwood Smith would go on to play Red Foreman I. That 70's show
You might like Buckaroo Banzai. Very quirky 80s movie starring the same actor. Plus it had Jeff Goldblum!
Peter Wells is great
Detroit is still a very bad city it’s high crime rate can be attributed to a long history of economic decline, poverty, and drug addiction. The city's loss of manufacturing jobs, decline in population and tax revenue, and the crack epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s also played a major contributing factor to the decline of the city.
"Either this is going to be a comedy... or it's gonna be dead serious"
You were kinda right on BOTH!
Also, people recommended other Paul Verhoeven sci-fi movies: Starship Troopers and Total Recall and you should see both instead of watching any of the Robocop sequels (although Robocop 2 is still decent and has some cool ideas and great visual effects but I'd stop at that one because Robocop 3 is utter trash).
"Very disturbing but fun nonetheless" Great mini-review there Dawn!
Dick Jones' receptionist is actually Clarence's (Kurtwood Smith's) wife in real life.
This was such a joy. Dawn's sheer joy throughout was like watching the movie again for the first time.
22:22 If nobody has mentioned it yet Kurtwood Smith who plays Clarence Boddicker is actually married to the woman playing Dick Jones’s secretary in real life. They met on the set of Robocop and have been together since.
Glad you liked this one! This is one of the greatest movies of the 80s. Saw it multiple times in the theater.
If you haven't done Blade Runner yet ut's a must. The 1982 theatrical version, is the best version.
Dawn Marie, your positivity and sense of humor make your reactions a delight.
Yeah same I watched robcop when I was 7 and Halloween by the time I was 8 😂
ROBOCOP this is a very great movie, and you are Wondereful, thanks 😘😊
Robocop 2 is a decent sequel that I think you’ll have fun watching considering how you reacted to this one.
The movie version of Detroit is cleaner than IRL Detroit.
I can't help but laugh at Dawn's mucky laugh 😊
*28:30** my grand dad use to say the same thing ish!* except instead of saying _"thr wasnt enough"_ hed say _"i wouldnt feed this to a dog! & youre moms fat!"_*. anyway, no1 went to his funeral. _JC
A great "cult classic" robot film you'd love is Short Circuit!
It's mostly a comedy but also has some excitement and heart.
If you liked this one you should watch Robocop 2, it's pretty good too. Don't bother with the rest (Robocop 3 and the remake) tho.
Some other robot movies to check out:
Robocop 2 (1990) It's a pretty good sequel.
Pacific Rim (2013) Giant robots fighting giant monsters, what more could you ask for?
Westworld (1973) This was also made into a series a few years ago.
Wall-E (2008) Animated movie about a lonely robot in the future.
Chappie (2015) Interesting movie from South Africa
Ex Macina (2014) This movie blurs the lines between AI robots and humans
Real Steel (2011) Estranged father and son bond over piloting fighting robots.
The Iron Giant (1999) Animated, Giant alien robot crashes on earth and befriends 9 year old boy
i, Robot (2004) a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot.
Forgot Robocop 3 and the remake of the first one buddy
@@knowlzer No, I didn't.
If u didn't sorry 🤣
Forgot Terminator 🤨
@@pinolicata615 Dawn has already seen Terminator and T2.
I'm not afraid of the robots taking over.
It's not like I have any choice in how anything's run now.
They'll probably just do things more rationally and efficiently.
If you want to see how toxic waste can be used for a force of good, you should watch "The Toxic Avenger". A true pinnacle of 1984 cinema.
I was 8 when my dad let me watch this in 1990 with the famous 'don't tell your mum' rule 😅 would recommend robocop 2 aswell
Robocop 2 is worth watching. Three is a toy commercial and is only entertaining by being so bad. The remake is horrible.
22:20 The actress playing the secretary is Joan Pirkle, who married Kurtwood Smith a year after this film's release. They first met filming this scene. They're still together to this day.
25:45 -- Actor Ray Wise didn't get to see Emil in the makeup and prosthetics, so his reaction was genuine.. :P
Hardware

A cult classic
In this future, Detroit improves significantly from today.
He was dead, think of him more like Frankenstein but just with some mechanical parts.
As to the ED-209, I have only one thing to say.
I'd buy that for a dollar! :D
Yes, they made a Robocop 2 after this movie, and it was just as good.
I hope you review it soon!
RoboCop (1987) (R)

RoboCop (2014) (Reboot) (PG-13)
I hate to be "that guy"...
... But RoboCop 2 is 1990.
Great reaction, Dawn.
There is more Robocop films, number two is the best of them.
2:42 Do you know another way of showering? 😂😂
3:12 lol the concern for chewing gum as an occupational hazard is pretty funny considering the next scene
Hi Dawn. Great that, it was a tad more brutal than Inspector Gadget as far as i remember. Have an eggcellent Easter, take care
The "I can feel them, but I can't remember them" line is absolutely something you wouldn't expect out of a movie in this genre. One of the many reasons this movie still holds up today.
She wouldn't make eye contact with it , she would look at it in her peripheral... rotglmao In all honesty you seen one you seen them all, Same with women.. But yeah that was a pretty funny comment
Most harcore lassie. You made it sound like you've seen so many grenades in your life :D
The film’s director Paul Verhoeven described Robocop as Jesus Christ come back to life in America in the 20th Century saying “If Christ was to come back, he’d have a gun”. That’s Robocop.
the satire of Robocop and Starship Troopers was lost on a few people. were great Verhoeven movies!
