    This was a great comparison 😀 finally one where I can hear the difference while listening through my OG HomePods lol.
    Would love to see a mic comparison as well since the new HomePods have fewer mics. I’m always impressed how the HomePod 1 can hear me say “hey siri” over loud music while I’m 10 ft away and I’m wondering if the HomePod 2 would struggle with it 🤔

    It’s the clarity for me on the new HomePod. You can hear every distinct sound in the music samples you were using compared to the OG. I can def hear Dolby Atmos doing it’s thing. But I’ll miss the bass that came with the originals.

    • @gamesnic
      @gamesnic Год назад +5

      Dolby Atmos is just marketing here. Atmos usually refers to full spherical placement of audio sources and this right here gives you only one point of sound which makes no sense to have Atmos on. Also, clarity depends mostly from the DSP (software tuning of the speakers) than the actual hardware.

    Yup. And better dispersion because of two additional tweeters. And better Siri detection with loud music on because of more microphones. The processing power is better with the new one, but that’s about it. The original HomePod was absolutely revolutionary, from an audio standpoint. If you do a test sweep, that little speaker goes down to almost 20 Hz, which is comparable performance to my $1200 Adam audio subwoofer that goes with my studio monitor set up.

Then do the Same test with 2 2nd gen HomePods and see how it sounds. Also with the first gens you can turn on and off base boost. I wonder if there is a base boost on the second gen you can turn on or did they bake in an EQ like older iTunes on the Macs had. Curious about these possible tweaks.

    Seems like OH has more bass, and the new one has less bass, and you can hear the lyrics more clearly. But its not by much at all! Not enough to upgrade if you want to even call it that. Losing 2 tweeters and mics seems like cost savings for a "lower" price on Apple's end.
    A mixer setting would make a great software update so you could make those adjustments manually and save them as EQs or even let you use EQs in the software.

    This is the typical marketing approach with Tim Cook: how to charge more for as little improvement as possible.
    One of the reason explaining the mild success of the 1sr gen in term of sales was its too high selling price. And now, they have increased the selling price. This is just stupid.
    Next step, Apple will say the 1st gen did not meet the expected numbers in term of sales, and neither did the 2nd gen. So, we drop this product line… IDIOTS!!

      Lol I’m an audiophile; I have all three of those, and the Echo Studio as well as a complete Sonos setup with Arc, dual Ones, and Sub Mini. The OG HomePods are the best sounding, with the HomePod 2’s coming in as a close second. Technically the 2’s should be better for audiophiles because they literally sound like there were EQ’d in a lab, but the OGs are a little more pleasing for more than half the tracks so they take the win.
      This isn’t an objective truth, as audio sounds different to everybody. But I will say, as an audiophile coming from an audio engineering background, you can’t discredit me when I say these HomePods are absolutely NOT trash. They are excellent and can compete with speakers many times their own size. And if you can afford two, setting them up as a stereo pair, they just might replace your old Atmos surround system depending on the room acoustics.
