What's a ThinkIn?
A ThinkIn is not just another panel discussion. It’s a real editorial meeting where your insight and experience can help shape our reporting.
Event description:
Duran Duran founding member Nick Rhodes talks about the Birmingham foursome’s latest album Future Past which features collaborations with Mark Ronson, Lykke Li, Erol Alkan and the Godfather of electronic music, Giorgio Moroder.
So many of their contemporaries have embraced the lucrative 80s throwback tours, but the wild boys have resisted. Does a back catalogue like Duran Duran’s hold a band back? What does the future of music look like to Nick Rhodes, and what’s it like doing the same job for 43 years?
Editor:
Mark St Andrew: Head of Programming, Tortoise Media
Guest:
Nick Rhodes: Musician, Producer and Founding Member of Duran Duran
Every time I hear an interview with Nick, my admiration of him grows and grows. I loved Duran Duran from the first note I heard, and listening to Nick (and John too) makes the love of their music grow. Classy band. Classy guys. Nick is my number one pick to sit and have a chat with. ❤
Another ARCADIA album is long overdue. That debut SO RED THE ROSE was absolutely perfect and wondrous, deep, dark and full of emotion, passion and musical excellence. It would've been great had Nick been asked about the possibility.
12' extended plays were decades ahead of the curve.
If ONLY! So Red The Rose is THE most perfect album *****
Ow yesss I love that album... The Flame is my favo from that.. I love the video :)
Er that would mean that Simon, Nick and Roger do an album and John goes on an extended holiday, so no I don't think that is a good idea/ Future Past already has Arcadia feels, here and there, Invisible itself sounds more Arcadia then DD.

Nick is a great interviewee. One of the best interviews w a pop star.
Fascinating and very insightful interview! Cool idea to have your members ask Nick their questions on camera. I think Nick is one of the best musicians in all of rock music history to interview. He is very knowledgeable and would be an excellent mentor for any young musicians starting out. I especially appreciate his honesty about the behind-the-scenes business side of being in a famous band and their song selection process.
I agree with him that the album format is the best musical experience because it can transport the listener through an emotional as well as sonic journey similar to the experience of watching the storyline in a movie unfold. Singles are fun to listen to anytime, but to truly immerse yourself in a full album can be a very transformative experience. It was for me when I was a teen and my young adult years.
I also agree with Nick that analog sounds much better than digital. Music sounds fuller and richer on an analog stereo, as if the band is playing in your living room or you are right there with them in the studio. I used to tape Duran Duran songs off the radio onto my own mix tapes when I was 13 and that was super fun to do before I was able to buy my own records. Having a great sounding stereo was a huge deal in the 80s.
Master mind of Duran Duran and he's a top brilliant awesome guy!!!! Brilliant awesome interview 🤣
when I was a teen in the 80s I thought Nick Rhodes was the coolest looking guy in rock. watching this video, I still think so
I do too, I thought he was just as cute as John if not more. Still do. Just saw them this year in concert!
Nick was truly beautiful when he was young - green eyes, lips, cheekbones. Not sexy. More a beautiful work of art. And he still has a kind of beauty now as an older gentleman
I have loved this man since I was 12 years old. I adore him and would love to meet him, maybe one day!
I really enjoyed this interview immensely; especially seeing the Nick the way I always thought he was and is, naturally; erudite, creative and imaginative. Way to go.
🔥 He hasn't lost his accent it makes me proud 🔥
NICK is so Intelligent,
Love his articulated wise words & output when it comes to experience, art, music
Always enjoy listening and learning from interviews behind a Talented Band of all times,,,,🙌🙌🙌
So damn eloquent, I don't know how he puts up with Simon. Opposites attract.
@@Alpha_7227 LOL,,,,
yes agree with you, they must have learned the art of tolerating each other,
They basically need each or else the band would not survive artistically speaking!
@@maximoperini Simon and Nick are close they're like brothers.
This interview with Nick was very interesting, I enjoyed what he had to sAY❤
Loved the interview!!! Please bring Nick Rhodes back and pick his brain 🧠 more 🙏🏼
This was a lot of fun to see. I'm 54 y/o and, therefore was in Jr.High and High School from '81-'87. Duran was VERY important to me (and many of my peers). Thanks for a great interview with a couple unique questions I'd not heard before!
Interesting interview. Love Duran Duran just as much now as I did 25 years ago.
Me too, although 25 years ago was 1996, between thank you and Medazzaland.. What record in particular got you into them?
Same!
You didnt' ask me, but I loved them from the Rio album! Even had a Nagel print in my home. :) @@davemcwilliam1227
What a great guy!!!
Future past is a masterpiece album thank you dd
Nick, my Muse, you put it perfectly - the new stuff is our lifeblood. As a writer, I often have to start a new book just to finish an older story that needs more energy. The excitement of starting a new idea off feeds other things you might be doing. Art is weird that way.
Great interview. Love this band and always found Nick to be a great one to interview. Such an interesting man.
Very good interview, Nick is always a pleasure to listen to, but the questions were very good too.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Nick is a genius, and I still loving him, 40 years later.
Fabulous interview! Loved all the interesting questions and answers! 😃💖🎯
A great question to Nick would've been..."Will the unreleased album "Reportage" which was recorded with Andy Taylor still in the band and was the follow up album after "Astronaut" ever see the light of day? And what was it about the album that caused it to be shelved? At the time Roger had said the record would be in some ways a homage to Duran's roots as a band, more direct and a return to their dance and new wave origins. Is that true?
In recent year end interviews Nick has now said they have gone into the studio and listened to Reportage and all four (permanent) members have mentioned that they’ve listened to it and going to finish the album. Given how they were successful in working remotely with Andy and Warren on Danse Macabre, working with Andy to finish Reportage now looks like it’s definitely going to happen! Yay!
As for the content of Reportage, they’ve said it’s a more political album than they’ve ever made. I had heard back in 2008 it was much more rock than electronic. We will have to wait to hear it before deciding if it is a return to their new wave dance roots.
Unique person! And he's one of the motors driving one of the greatest music band.
Nick is a genius and completely fascinating to listen to talk. No wonder Andy Warhol befriended him. I love how he doesn't just answer questions superficially, but he delves deep and gives a thoughtful and detailed answer.

Once again, another enlightening Duran Duran interview. As a former DJ and as a Horror/Crime-Thriller author, I never thought about the audience choosing who to like and not the other way around.
I wonder how much this applies to the audience choosing what websites, articles, blogs, and fiction to like.
Anyway, this was a great interview with Nick Rhodes. He's always professional during an interview.
Now, that Nick and the rest of Duran Duran are much older and have evolved over the decades, I find his appearance WITHOUT make-up to be MORE attractive. He's more handsome without it. :)
🎶 Great music all the way through & I'm looking forward to seeing the lads in the Summer at the seaside 🎵
Smashing!
I DURAN DURAN. CON LA LORO ENERGIA POSITIVA. INCREDIBILE.. MI HANNO TRASMESSO, DA SEMPRE, KA VOLONTÀ DI TENERE DURO NELLA VITA E FARCELA.... ABBIAMO BISOGNO DI QUESTA ENERGIA... GRAZIE DI CUORE... GRAZIE E GRAZIE.... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very Enjoyable. The question I'd love to ask that didn't get asked is why not release physical singles with extended mixes and b-sides instead of a deluxe version of the album? I'm sure this would be a very successful format choice amongst their traditional fanbase, and still works quite well, for example, for Pet Shop Boys.
What a lovely surprise this turned out to be. I’m a happy bunny. Thank you so much
Great interview...thanks! Last question was the best one. Would love an album with unreleased songs that didnt make an album.
Hi Mari, thanks for watching. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Like any artist the creation is what Duran Duran live for, whether that's creating new music or creating a live event.
Hello 👋 Nick
I think Nick's dad owner the toy shop in the old bull ring shopping centre in Birmingham. I'm sure I saw him in there when I was a kid.
Really? That's interesting!
I was actely named after him. And first time i seen him talking :)
I'm curious about his musical tastes. Genres, bands, musicians...how his tastes has changed over the years, is he more open to music he used to have a distaste or apathy for. Sure, he mentions some here, but I wish I could pick his brain for more details.
bonus tracks cd only and only just made available online/streaming months later but no vinyl
Hi 👋 nick
Great question on tracks not making the album. "Beautiful Colours" off 'Astronaut' only appeared on the "Demos" CD, and yet was chosen as the theme for FIFA's ' 50 Footballers of All Time' ceremony. Why that didn't appear on 'Astronaut" and "Bedroom Toys" did I will never know.
You are so right... Bedroom Toys should have never made that album when Beautiful Colours/Virus/ Salt in the Rainbow were waiting in the background to find a place!! Blows my mind
Virus - its just like DD dont know they have a great song, and keep it suppressed. This is also the same as Beautiful Colours - excellent track - and a few on Astronoght could have been removed.
I’m glad Bedroom Toys made the album. Slinky groove! 😍
He's the kicker tho. Bedroom Toys inspired Justin Timberlake's Rock Your Body. and their next album, Justin found a way to work with DD. But Yeah Red Carper, WAS a Massacre LOL
He is my dream man I'm 51 lol
What's the music track used in the intro?
It was Anniversary, off the new Future Past album. (I picked it!)
i have always wondered why nobody has suggested to conor mcgregor to pickup on notorious fro a walk on song, as nick was on about licencing
Very intelligent man
Please don't do United Center
I didn't go
Hope next time better venue
Bad seats at United
I wonder why Nick never mentions Japan and David Sylvian as one of his main influences
well, i get into Japan and sylvian because of him. Found that in an interview of the band in the 80s
Who are they
💙💚💛💜❤💗💖👏🏻👏🏻😍
Thank God that John is working with merchant and something else with Dom Brown and Anna Ross
I need a Duran Duran The Weeknd crossover like I've never needed anything in my life.
Planet Roaring would have been the most powerful track on Paper Gods but ended up as a bonus, What a waste! Could have been the sequel to Planet Earth.
Is it me or is Mark hot? 🔥
Not entirely sure but I think he was nick named Ringo at one point.
