I'm 18, if I was in an orchestra with Sir Colin Davis I wouldn't suck that's for sure!

I keep thinking I would like to hear a live performance of this. Sorry I missed this one though. Parts 2 and three also fantastic.

Well, I have a lot of diferent performances of this symphony, but nome of then is those you indicate me. However, I know the Berstein's performance and I believe that Szell performance still deserves the gold medal.

    Great performance!
But, the best of all is the old one directed by George Szell.

Even in his earlier symphonies, Sibelius's orchestra seems to rise organically up from the earth. It truly is a new symphonic form and he was a genius. A pity he quit composing relatively early---maybe he had nothing else to say--and what he said was plenty.

I have heard Vanska and Bernstein' s performances. But Szell's performance with the Concertgebouw in 1964 is the best. Sorry. I beg to differ on your comment.

The greatest Sibelius conductor of the 20th century was, for me, Sir John Barbirolli.......with his Halle Orchestra of course!!!

Listen to Okko Kamu and BPO, or Sir Thomas Beecham

I guess you never heard Vanska's, Segerstam's, or Bernstein's performances then have you? Because they blow Szell out of the water. Szell was a competent conductor, but he has been bettered by the younger generations.

@snarfeater why swear on the internet? I'm glad you're enthusiastic, but it shows your lack of word vocabulary. could fit about 1000 words in place of 'ass'
