It's wonderful to hear your opinions and feelings of our national composer hero! I started to listen Sibelius when I was a teenager and fell in love with his music then. Now I have been listening many years Central European composers works and suddenly I am finding my way back to Sibbe's music. It certainly grows very deep within me, it's like a saga of my family and my people's history.

This is the most beautiful landscape of Finnish Carelia - seen from the Koli hill to the Lake Pielinen - in musical scenery. It is a part of my native soul mirroring the movement of my cradle...

I was reading about the musical band Genesis and discovered this particular piece of music from an interview with Anthony Phillips, who said something to the effect of having been somewhat "inspired" by Sibelius' Karelia Suite. So I looked it up on you tube and here I am...this is wonderful music. I'd never heard of Sibelius before. Thanks for uploading this.

I couldn't agree more. I used to play this piece in an orchestra when I was 17, that particular section used to give me the shivers back then and it still does now. The melody and harmony are sublime.

My son was born 7 weeks early. After six weeks we could take him home from hospital. I would hold him in my arms before the window, watching the sun going down while listening to this masterpiece having a heart full of thanks. Never shall forget this moment.

Yes, for me too. One of the most beautiful moments of string writing in the literature. Also the English Horn solo is one of the most beautiful ever written, with the string pizzicato behind it. This is one of my very favorite slow movements of all time.

Would any of you who, like me, feel so moved by this beautiful piece, be willing to make recommendations of other pieces of similar mood if not beauty? I am new to the classical music genre. Thank you for any assistance. FanofAslan.

Stunningly gorgeous work by a composer who deserves more credit in producing works that are all-time classics in this genre. When I first heard this movement while studying Sibelius as an undergrad music student some 30+ years ago I instantly fell in love with it. Thank you for posting it!

I first heard Sibelius in 4th grade music class. I never forgot the name and it was while writing a paper on Sibelius for a music class as an undergrad that I discovered this piece. It makes me want to cry, it's so lovely.

I once got a Columbia Record called 'Finlandia' with the Penn Phill conducted by Ormandy. One side started out with Hugo Alfén's Swedish Rhapsody No.1 Op.19 'Midsommarvoka' followed by this piece. At the time I had been recovering from Vietnam and listened to just the two pieces for hours on end. It was a long time before I realized they were completely different works by two different Composers.

This and Hugo Alfven's Swedish Rhapsody No 1 have been my favorite pieces. Columbia Records had an album called "Finlandia" with a twilight mountain scene on the cover. One one side they put the "Swedish Rhapsody No 1" followed by this piece. They sound so great together, and both are on U-Tube

Finland used to be my favourite country as well, born and raised. Today, the police are after Christians for quoting the Bible on SJW-LGBT. No matter, this world shall pass. PSALM 92: "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: 2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, 3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound."

I performed this in February playing 2nd Bassoon. And did circular breathing from 2:13 to 2:42 and 2:48 to 3:10 because there were notes in the Bassoon parts that lasted 13 bars. The same had to happen in the alla marcia. I loved performing it. It's a wonderful piece

I only recently heard this piece and didn't know what it was. I thought it might have been from a symphony, but that was coz it sounded at first a bit like the minor equivalent of the 3rd mvt from Brahms's 2nd, Then I thought it was some nationalistic piece by Liszt coz the second tune had a strongly nationalistic flavour about it. Actually it probably is nationalistic, but by Sibelius. A fine piece, I must say, and not overly played, unlike some of the other movements from this suite.
