Timeless, absolutely TIMELESS! I always cry at my favourite film, especially when Dorothy is saying goodbye. Judy Garland is a very distant relative of mine we both share the same great grandfather (my 6th, her 3rd) from the 1600s.
Just to make it clear, only the last fifteen minutes or so of this talks about the movie. The majority is about L Frank Baum and his life and his writing the books (which incidentally are far more trippy than the movie. The books are FREAKY!)
Here's a clue - if you're looking for frivolous crappy shit to distract your mind - avoid anything produced by BBC Four it's exclusively for intelligent people.

I hope they don’t ruin this movie by making a Hollywood version. Some movies should never be remade and this is one of them.

I had thought it was a critique of the gold standard,loved the '39 movie.
The critique of the Gold Standard is an interpretation of the original story. It makes alot of sense when you look at all the hidden symbols
