I LOVE Long Lost Family!! I'm in the US and have seen all the episodes... including the spin-off about foundlings. I adore Davina and I may have screamed her name and laughed so hard when I saw her and realized she was playing herself!
Excellent video Ellie. If you go way back to An Unearthly Child Ian Chesterton took a walk round the TARDIS after hearing it's sound and claiming "It's Alive" and then commenting if somehow it was connected through the floor. At this point he hadn't actually been inside yet.
Well the psychic paper doesn't always show them what the doctor wants it to show them. Instead it shows them what they would want to see to let the doctor do what he wants to. And a running gag in nuwho was that that often is different from what the doctor expects it to be.
My favorite gag with the psychic paper is when the Doctor is trying to convince young Kazran Sardick in A Christmas Carol that he's the new babysitter, and he says something like "I think you'll see that I'm a certified responsible adult" and when the paper fails to actually convey this information, he says "Finally, a lie to big for it to handle." or something similar.
On the whole "mavity" thing: you may have noticed that Isaac Newton says "Odd's bodkins!" when he sees the TARDIS. This was the catchphrase of Timothy Claypole, the court jester ghost, in Rentaghost - you had to have grown up in the UK in the eighties to get that one. Nevertheless, the point would be that time/reality has been altered. Also, Mrs Flood says "You look like you lost a pound and found a six pence." The phrase should be "lost a pound and found a penny." This is most likely a reference to Anita Dobson being married to Queen guitarist, Brian May, in that he uses six pences as plectrums. The scene with the Doctor leaping over chimneys is a ref to both Mary Poppins and the airport scene in Toy Story II. In Toy Story II, Woody leaps in a similar way over the carriages of the baggage car so that he can rescue Jessie.
Recently watched James Sutton’s presentation on Who FX, and the Psychic Paper is the longest-serving prop in New Who, used by Eccleston through Whitaker…and Gatwa’s looks identical.
I'm so excited for Doctor Who! The whole hug from "The Giggle" has made me all aboard the Ncuti Gatwa train! For the first time an actor has had the opportunity to show care and love for the previous doctor, being the closest to this before was Matt Smith doctor calling on behalf of Peter Capaldi doctor to tell Claira to trust him.❤
The ladder scene, also Pete and the Doctor hanging from the rope ladder attached to John Lumic's zeppelin, with Lumic (aka the Cyber Controller) hanging on the bottom. (Pete is given the sonic screwdriver to cut the ladder and drop Lumic)
When they were filming the 60th, there were Henrik advertisements on the wall, so yes, it's quite likely that the store with the big snowman on it is Henrik's being active again.
Or... we're in a timeline where "our" Doctor never existed, and thus where the store Rose worked in was never blown up by the Doctor. I imagine Rose would have died that night in that universe.
I have an Idea of them taking the Mavity joke to a point where the Doctor and Ruby end up in the time of Issac Newton for a story they do the thing and then they do another gag were the Doctor say that he just helped Isaac Newton with his discovery of gravity by suggesting he switch the M to an Gr and then say that Isaac Newton misspelled it as Mavity and say he's glad he court the error because he has no idea what the consequences could have been.
I think the building from Rose reappearing here is probably like an add on that an accident would happen at the same building involving The Doctor (And a blond companion). Which might be linked to the Goblins feeding off of coincidences.
When I heard Mrs Flood's name, why did I think of The Flood from Waters Of Mars?! (Smelling an 14 & 15 crossover, or maybe she's The Master/Mistress, The Rani, etc) 🤨🤔
I think Mrs flood will play out to be some connection to a certain Amy Pond & River Song it’s all the same connection to water. Plus she knows gravity so it’s someone able to move outside the current timeline.
Thank you for another great video and Happy New Year from Boston, Massachusetts! I wondered why Davina looked familiar and realized she was the host of "Big Brother" on Charlie Brooker's "Dead Set."
It may be worth you having a look at the original Omen movie where there is a scene with a priest being "spiked" by the lightning rod of a church. That priest was played by none other that Patrick Troughton!
I was actually thinking State of Decay at the climax with the piercing of the giant goblin. Interesting that it was actually a tip of the hat to the Little Mermaid. I was really impressed by this episode and cant believd I missed all these easter eggs!
Hello. I had a question in my mind since I heard Ruby's name, and then she said something like she was cursed. Is there a connection to River Song / Melody Malone's book Ruby's Curse (written by Alex Kingston) or is it just a cute reference?
Also, I couldn't help noticing that Ruby Sunday is quite similar to Ruby Tuesday, which is a Beatles song, and there's a Beatles episode of the new season. Goblin coincidence?
Yes, there are a lot of delightful music connections in the episode. I may be reading too much into this because River Song's storyline was one of my favourites, but I'd love to see a family connection this time, and it would be a great plot continuation too.
Small detail I've only just noticed watching this video about the sunday's door. While Mrs. Flood's door does match the current tardis exterior color, the sunday's door actually matches more with amy and Rory's door back during matt smith. 🤔 Edit: just wanna point out that: On a very small technicality, that clara wasn't a companion but a one off guest. Anyways hope your new years was fun
I've been watching Smith's episodes to see what all happened with the crack. It's so interesting that it's back and everyone just seems to be shrugging it off, in and out of the Whoverse
I had this weird thought that Ruby Road (the actual road) was named after Ruby (the person) because Ruby was for whatever reason transported back to before the church was built.
I know it's probably just a coincidence that the house door is TARDIS blue or significance in another way but imagine how heartbreaking it would be for it to turn out that Ruby her family and Mrs Flood are living in the house the Doctor brought for Amy and Rory before they got zapped!
That early scene may have 3 versions of the Doctor: he's wearing a completely different outfit when we first see him watching Ruby. Also, check out Ruby's boots and then look at the boots worn by the woman in the cloak.
@@christinewhoyt why does he need to be fast? He has a time machine, he can take all week to pick an outfit and still go back to seemingly appear moments later!
I feel like there's a connection with the master (the female hand grabbing the tooth), Ruby's mother who has no dna evidence (idk could the master have a child?), or that's just Ruby dropping herself off. And the neighbour susan who knows what a tardis is, which will all be revealed but it makes me excited. We'll find out!
The first thing I thought of when the Goblin King got impaled was the correlation to the Great Vampire being impaled by the bow ship in the Fourth Doctor's serial "State of Decay." Also, I was expecting the Goblin King to look more like Davie Bowie and less like Jabba the Hutt.
I Remember seeing filming footage in 2023 and they had posters with the name of the shop where Rose worked. At 8:13 you can see some weird white thing in the background floating and going behind his head & off to the right.
As an american watcher i really appreciate breaking down things i may not understand. I thought Devina was a character I couldn't remember from a past episode.
Also the blue car parked next to the Tardis at the end of the episode looks like Donna's car! Could that just be a coincidence or maybe just a nod at the DoctorDonna story arc? Or maybe Rose Noble borrowed her mom's car and went looking for the Doctor... Who knows 🤔
But we're also learning a new language, of luck. So I don't think it's a coincidence, but everything converging for a reason, a side effect of the Flux or something
So, it's clear Ruby lives around the same area as Rose and co., I wonder if this means the "Doctor Expert" is gonna come back. Idk if anyone remembers, but in the first episode of series 1 there's a guy who has been documenting everything the doctor has ever done up to Rose meeting 9, but he dies later in the episode........ he seemed like such a useful character, I wonder if he'll come back or maybe Ruby will come across his hoard? at 6:20 that looks like the same apartment complex Mickey parked outside when Rose went to talk to the fanatic. With all the call backs to Rose's first episode, I have a suspicion that plot beat will come back.
Probably not, he seemingly was only created for Rose acting as us to give her and us an explanation of who the doctor is since RTD wanted people to be able to start with Rose and not classic who and understand everything I don't think he's important enough to come back from the dead
Had same thought about Victorian Clara BUT technically she died and didn't become the companion it was a different Clara. That said, if I had been able to chat with Moffat I would have said let Amy/Rory go (I loved them but bear with me). We were all surprised when Jenna Coleman appeared in the Asylum of the Daleks and then died. Imagine instead of the holdover Amy/Rory he met Clara and she died in every time period from Old West to figure to Victorian times and that drove the mystery of who is this "impossible girl" (woman) and when he found the 21st century one he did everything to keep her alive and solve the story. And for that matter, I would have preferred the Victorian Clara be that companion would have been a cool character to explore time and space with like old school Victoria. Basically Jenna Coleman any time period works 😂 but seriously just my two cents what if style...
Thank you. I have been waiting for anyone else to notice the door color(s) of Mrs. Flood. The interpretation is totally TBD, but the recognition is definitely appreciated. (Finally!! Why do I watch these?!)
PS: I wish the USA Disney+ viewing options were the same as in the UK. As it stands, I rely on you to tell me when to start my subscription again to see the 2024 episodes.
"The sharpness of the tongue defeats the sharpness of the warrior" Is perfect for The Doctor, whether it's the intended meaning of the proverb. The Doctor being pacifistic, can take down armies with words over weapons.
6:00 Probably timey wimey, but if the Reboot episode "Rose" was set in 2005 and Mickey mentions about the Mimto pizza place, then the flyer on the fridge says "Serving Notting Hill since 2006". Year ahead of "Rose".
Yes, but Notting Hill is the complete other side of London to the Powell Estate, which is supposed to be in the east. It is unlikely that Mickey and Jackie.would travel all the way to W London, just to get to a Pizza shop or a F+C outlet The 2006 reference could simply mean they opened a new outlet in NHG
I'm 99.9% sure this is wrong, but I think it would be a mind blower if Mrs Flood turned out to be one of the splinters of Clara Oswald distributed throughout the Doctor's timeline. As far as I can recall there was no rule the splinters of Clara couldn't age, or that they only appear right at the point in time the Doctor needed them. All of the version of Clara appeared to have a normal life leading up to her interaction with the Doctor.
@@SandSlash242That's Clara Prime that's time-stopped, the person you're replying to is talking about Clara's shards like the Victoria one or Oswin in the Asylum
@@SleepyHarryZzz Ohhh I guess you can theorise that it's one of the older Clara's, but I don't think they're going to stick with old characters that much, only mention them in passing. She already came back multiple times, even at the end of Capaldi's run, so it'll be an overused character now. This is definitely someone else
Has anyone mentioned that Anita Dobson could be an elder Romana? Hence the warm smile at the end. Maybe she's had her memory repressed hence her aged appearance but somehow with the doctor going back in time this was undone?
Happy New Year and thanks for another terrific , well researched video. The two blue doors theory is very intriguing, and Mrs Flood's door looks closer to the Tardis colour. Are the door numbers also significant? 🤔
I was struck by how they showed Mrs Flood sitting outside her house with the door closed. Is this just a method to hide it being bigger on the inside ? What's the deal with the door numbers ?
It might be a coincidence, or a subtle hint from the episode makers, but when Mrs Flood speaks to camera she breaks the fourth-wall, and her house is number 4
Houdini has appeared in doctor who expanded media before, most notably (i reckon) with the 5th doctor in the destiny of the doctor 50th anniversary big finish special: Smoke and Mirrors. Would recommend

6:47 i wonder if the doors are signs the houses are all tardises?! Like everyone living on the street is a timelord (or even doctors?? Now we have the timeless child and the bigeneration there may be a bunch floating about). I always had my suspicions Ruby was Jenny or somehow related
Happy new year to all at Who Culture central. Great video as usual I also thought that the Goblin Kings demise was a nod to Hot Fuzz Keep up the good work.
Is it just me, or did the Goblin-King-getting-spiked bit remind anyone else of Ming-getting-spiked at the end of Flash Gordon? On the same note, the hand-picking-up-the-gold-tooth in The Giggle also made me think of the hand-picking-up-Ming's-ring, again at the end of Flash Gordon. RTD is the right age to have watched that film as a kid.
Doesn't Mrs. Flood's character change, from a grumpy neighbor who blames a guy for leaving a police box on the pavement to a cooperative one who knows what a TARDIS is, shows that there is either a glitch in time, a possession/body swap, or memories unlocked?
Unlike the erratic random steering of the Tardisby previous doctors, the brand new doctor certainly seems more on tune with the Tardis, taking it to be in time to pick up Ruby at midnight and able to repark just across the road from Mrs Twist... (even arriving exactly when Davina is about to be brained by the tree) This makes it more likely that we are seeing multiple versions of the Ncuti doctor.. I will lay good money on the doctor we see initially watching the band perform is from the future, trying to figure out the significance of Ruby and the Twist character..
In your video "10 Doctor Who Mysteries Explained Outside The Show", you mention that Davies has hinted at returning Susan to the show, but hasn't yet. Could she be Susan, since it's possible she has her own TARDIS (reference blue door)?
Nerdy nitpick regarding the Doctor and Houdini - The first mention of the Doctor meeting Houdini was actually in the final Jon Pertwee serial "Planet of the Spiders" - where the Doctor has difficulty in getting the name right!
My first thought when I saw the end of the goblin king was a reference to Deep Breath, but then I'm not steeped in popular culture outside of what the doctor does 😁
Missed the Kilt, a reference point to Jamie McCrimmon. Also the way The Doctor is dressed is very close to the way Lenny Henry dressed as the Doctor in a Red Nose day sketch.
Something that struck me was how close the "she said yes" scene felt to a Jarred's commercial . I'm not sure if they're international, but Jarred's is a jewelry store chain that ran an ad series with that byline. Learning that this scene was a suggestion from Disney makes me a titch concerned we'll see more "subliminal ads".
Ms. Flood has to be a past companion or another Clara echo/TimeLord. The blue painted door is a longer than the current run of Doctor Who theme. Back in the first 6th Doctor series both compainions had blue doors also.

Oh wow. Mary Poppins and Toy Story, what a mix of references hahaha. That's so whimsical
Only problem i have with this episode is why does the ladder have rungs spaced for human sized bodies?
They were a bit small imo
Wibbly wobbly, lengthy wengthy... 😉
Can never unsee now thanks 🤣
Susan Twist's IMDb page lists her as both Woman at Concert and Mrs Merridew so those sharp eyed fans were correct.
IMDb isn't a primary source (like an official BBC cast list would be for example) but it's definitely the same woman yeah
An extra detail the Minto Pizza menu has on it is the “since 2006” writing which at the time would have been “that new pizza place”.
That's a good spot! I love the attention to even small details that make Russel's who a proper lived-in universe!
Ruby disappearing from the timeline really felt like SJA episodes with the Trickster tbh
Mrs Floods front door is also No. 4...perhaps indicating it is the door of a Type 4 Tardis...
Ellie, I'm so glad I discovered you and Sean and Culture last year! Great video as always and THANKS for you!!!!
Ellie and Seán send their regards! 🖖
Keep the Easter Eggs coming! I love how you picked up that Mrs Flood said gravity after the timeline had changed. Very observant! :)
@@thewiseturtle Jackie would punish the universe for that.
@@timlemmens1087 Jackie is not a cruel person. She would seek a healthy solution, even if it wasn't ideal.
@@thewiseturtle Not if you mess with Rose.
This is from the last special but y’all missed the Toymaker’s references to wolves (aka Bad Wolf) in the opening scene
I didn't notice it was hair tint. I just kept thinking, "is everything shot on an effing bluescreen?"
I think that triad is a group of The Doctor’s 3 deadliest enemies creating an alliance
When I heard Mrs Flood's name, why did I think of The Flood from Waters Of Mars?!
(Smelling an 14 & 15 crossover, or maybe she's The Master/Mistress, The Rani, etc) 🤨🤔
The Waters of Mars was my thought too! I was like "huh, that's a familiar surname
Tom Bakers Doctor said he gave Isaac Newton the idea for gravity when hiding up the apple tree and dropping the apple on him.
But Bakers Newton didn't like curry
What is this “gravity” you speak of?
Do you mean Mavity?
Yes, I thought of Rose Tyler in The Empty Child and Ten and Rose climbing up a similar ladder to get away from the Cybermen in The Age of Steel.
It may be worth you having a look at the original Omen movie where there is a scene with a priest being "spiked" by the lightning rod of a church. That priest was played by none other that Patrick Troughton!
Yeah, prominent architectural spikes are commonly used in dark-comic-style stories as the "accidental" weapon of choice.
I was actually thinking State of Decay at the climax with the piercing of the giant goblin. Interesting that it was actually a tip of the hat to the Little Mermaid. I was really impressed by this episode and cant believd I missed all these easter eggs!
You missed Mike Wazowski On the wall at the end of the show When ruby is talking to her mum one of the pictures the foster children has drawn
Hello. I had a question in my mind since I heard Ruby's name, and then she said something like she was cursed. Is there a connection to River Song / Melody Malone's book Ruby's Curse (written by Alex Kingston) or is it just a cute reference?
Probably just a coincidence but still an interesting detail!
Also, I couldn't help noticing that Ruby Sunday is quite similar to Ruby Tuesday, which is a Beatles song, and there's a Beatles episode of the new season. Goblin coincidence?
Isn’t Ruby Tuesday by the Rolling Stones, though?
@@vyvienn Oh! You're right! oops!
Yes, there are a lot of delightful music connections in the episode. I may be reading too much into this because River Song's storyline was one of my favourites, but I'd love to see a family connection this time, and it would be a great plot continuation too.
The plot to me felt like a nod to the movie Labyrinth. Goblins that kidnap the babyto be and taken to the Goblin King David Bowie
Small detail I've only just noticed watching this video about the sunday's door. While Mrs. Flood's door does match the current tardis exterior color, the sunday's door actually matches more with amy and Rory's door back during matt smith. 🤔
Edit: just wanna point out that: On a very small technicality, that clara wasn't a companion but a one off guest.
Anyways hope your new years was fun
I've been watching Smith's episodes to see what all happened with the crack. It's so interesting that it's back and everyone just seems to be shrugging it off, in and out of the Whoverse
Also, Ruby looks rather similar to Clara in looks/face.
In de 60th in the tree the doctor is holding a theramin (not complete) but that instrument is used to make the intro music.
That early scene may have 3 versions of the Doctor: he's wearing a completely different outfit when we first see him watching Ruby. Also, check out Ruby's boots and then look at the boots worn by the woman in the cloak.
Many people wear the same kind of boots.
Maybe this Doctor is just really super fast to switch clothes.
@@christinewhoyt why does he need to be fast? He has a time machine, he can take all week to pick an outfit and still go back to seemingly appear moments later!
@@CSBlakebrough good points, but it's maybe just who this Doctor is.
The first thing I thought of when the Goblin King got impaled was the correlation to the Great Vampire being impaled by the bow ship in the Fourth Doctor's serial "State of Decay."
Also, I was expecting the Goblin King to look more like Davie Bowie and less like Jabba the Hutt.
I'm pretty sure Tom Baker also name-dropped Isaac Newton, saying something about having dropped an apple on his head...
In Season 1 we also got a mention of Houdini. Not sure what episode but I think Empty Child.
Big Finish Audios has done a 6th Doctor (Colin Baker) story with Houdini called Harry Houdini's War.
@@nailinthefashion Or she sold that car too as she gave away her lottery money to charity. xD
I saw a comment somewhere that the Doctor invented the gloves because of how he lost Rose.
Probably not, he seemingly was only created for Rose acting as us to give her and us an explanation of who the doctor is since RTD wanted people to be able to start with Rose and not classic who and understand everything
I don't think he's important enough to come back from the dead
@@paytonlarson3709 perhaps not, but it's odd they would have so much focus on her first episode. maybe it was just a fun call back.
Thank you for mentioning Clara walking around the Tardis. I was worried that mavity weren't the only thing changing lol 😂
She did not walk around the tardis but Run around it.
@@krysten789 May or April.
Happy new year Ellie
Happy new year!
She was Newton’s employee, and they are still using Mavity. We will see her again.
"The sharpness of the tongue defeats the sharpness of the warrior"
Is perfect for The Doctor, whether it's the intended meaning of the proverb. The Doctor being pacifistic, can take down armies with words over weapons.
David used the psychic paper in the star beast
"Grand Mistress Of The Knowledge"
I personally think as well about the goblin king being spiked as a reference to hot fuzz. And I will not change my mind about it.
It is unlikely that Mickey and Jackie.would travel all the way to W London, just to get to a Pizza shop or a F+C outlet
The 2006 reference could simply mean they opened a new outlet in NHG
I'm 99.9% sure this is wrong, but I think it would be a mind blower if Mrs Flood turned out to be one of the splinters of Clara Oswald distributed throughout the Doctor's timeline. As far as I can recall there was no rule the splinters of Clara couldn't age, or that they only appear right at the point in time the Doctor needed them. All of the version of Clara appeared to have a normal life leading up to her interaction with the Doctor.
she can't age because she's not technically alive, her heart doesn't work, shes pretty much in limbo and can go wherever she wants in that state
@@SandSlash242That's Clara Prime that's time-stopped, the person you're replying to is talking about Clara's shards like the Victoria one or Oswin in the Asylum
In the club, Ninth's leather jacket? Jamie's kilt?
Has anyone mentioned that Anita Dobson could be an elder Romana?
Hence the warm smile at the end.
Maybe she's had her memory repressed hence her aged appearance but somehow with the doctor going back in time this was undone?
I would love some Romana. But Susan is a far more likely option. Or the Master, perhaps.
@@quantisedspace7047 wait, door numbers can you explain?
It might be a coincidence, or a subtle hint from the episode makers, but when Mrs Flood speaks to camera she breaks the fourth-wall, and her house is number 4
Houdini has appeared in doctor who expanded media before, most notably (i reckon) with the 5th doctor in the destiny of the doctor 50th anniversary big finish special: Smoke and Mirrors. Would recommend
I’m glad I found this channel. I have seen so many videos filled with hate and garbage. I have watched the specials and I enjoyed them. I found nothing offensive about them. I like this channel, it is made by true fans with legitimate criticisms about the show.I have subscribed, keep up the great work. I will come here for real Who news and information.
I think they'll use the meeting of Isaac Newton as a reset point to fix some future screw up with mavity.
And can we all say she looks as beautiful this year as she did last year?...She was a slightly different shade of blue, but that juke boxxxx!
RTD is the right age to have watched that film as a kid.
pity they didn't overwrite Howells with Henricks in the tracking shot. (Cardiff resident here - some days we can't move for cybermen!)
How did you find the Crossgate Cabs connection, it baffles me? Do you have a process for finding these kinds of details?
I presume it's a whole lot of crowdsourcing. As in reading lots of Reddit posts and comments, and maybe having fans send info to them directly.
I will lay good money on the doctor we see initially watching the band perform is from the future, trying to figure out the significance of Ruby and the Twist character..
each doctor has had a blue tardis which was a different shade each time that is what the front doors are hinting
In your video "10 Doctor Who Mysteries Explained Outside The Show", you mention that Davies has hinted at returning Susan to the show, but hasn't yet. Could she be Susan, since it's possible she has her own TARDIS (reference blue door)?
Well remembered! And yes, it wouldn’t be surprising if Susan was folded into all this somehow
Hi... I've just found this channel and I'm loving it! Your break downs and up's and down's are so good!
Nerdy nitpick regarding the Doctor and Houdini - The first mention of the Doctor meeting Houdini was actually in the final Jon Pertwee serial "Planet of the Spiders" - where the Doctor has difficulty in getting the name right!
Houdini was also mentioned in the 3rd Doctor story Planet of Spiders
The Doctor asking Carla why she's crying brings to mind when Vincent asked Amy why she was crying.
I love these Easter Egg videos. Don't know how you manage to spot some of them! Thanks for adding to my enjoyment of the show 🙂
I'm glad the show is doing Christmas specials again 😊
13:03 don’t forget Donna in the runaway bride
My first thought when I saw the end of the goblin king was a reference to Deep Breath, but then I'm not steeped in popular culture outside of what the doctor does 😁
3 also mentioned Houdini by using a technique taught by the man himself to escape from a cocoon type thing.
Does the biodata module/chameleon arch have to be a fob watch? Probably a long shot but I noticed Mrs Flood holding a hip flask 🤔
Missed the Kilt, a reference point to Jamie McCrimmon. Also the way The Doctor is dressed is very close to the way Lenny Henry dressed as the Doctor in a Red Nose day sketch.
Having rewatches it i think mrs. Flood is a timelord she wasn't familiar with the doctor's tardis being stuck as a police box i guess.
I think Mrs Flood is actually Professor Chronitis from Shada, known as Professor Urban Chronitis Regius in Dirk Gently
I'm from Manchester, and the original "Santa" was known as Zippy because he was identical to the 70s kids show character
"Where's The Doctor gone?"
"He went to Jared's!"
Ms. Flood has to be a past companion or another Clara echo/TimeLord. The blue painted door is a longer than the current run of Doctor Who theme. Back in the first 6th Doctor series both compainions had blue doors also.
I’d assumed the use of the same shop was on purpose. Seems to be a lot of strings trying to go back to 9.
